My son is also 8 months old and I give him Ritz, Saltines, Vanilla wafers, graham crackers, and he has no teeth. He has no problems with it. I hope that helps...take care...L.
hello,
my 8 month son just got his top 2 teeth, for a total of 4 teeth. he is expressing interest in self feeding, and i want to give him some sort of cracker or other food to gnaw on that presents the least choking hazard. I am totally gripped by fear that he will choke. i'm sure all moms go through this, so any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you thank you thank you everyone for your input and advice. I've found rice cakes to be the best.I ended up starting out with gerber puffs and it went well. I think i'll move onto Ritz, Saltines and vanilla wafers. I really appreciate everyone's time and thoughtfullness. Thanks again

My babies never choked on plain, saltine crackers. Also, arrowroot cookies are good, because they dissolve rather than crumble in their mouth. You will find those in the baby food aisle.
In the baby food aisle, they have baby cokies and crackers, they basically dissolve in thier mouths-so they won't choke. My son loved them when he was a baby and I plan to use them again when my youngest is the right age.
Hi L., I am a mother of four, and my youngest son is 10 months old, so we are still going through the same types of situations. I swear by Gerber Zwieback toast. I really believe it is the best thing to start off with. It melt or kind of disinegrates in their mouths. The biter biscuts are good, but they can break off big chunks and they are harder than the toasts. The biscuts are good when they are still just sucking on them, but the tosat are great for the biting on. Also the Gerber graduates apple wagon whells are awesome, the melt away. Good luck:)
I heard a lot of bad things about the biter biscuits being a choking hazard and I'm a worrier, so I stuck with the Gerber Puffs and Ritz crackers. Ritz also makes these new toasted cracker things and my son LOVES them. They're a little crispier than regular Ritz crackers but they still dissolve fairly quickly.
Hello, my 8 month old nephew eats melba toast, biter biscuits, and cereal puffs all out of the baby section. They are specially made to either disolve in the mouth or to be tough enough that they can't break a huge chunk off. You might try these.
Cherios is great for them. Also Gerber has stars. They come in a bottle looking container and have different flavors of fruits and vegetables. The great thing about them is that they dissolve in their mouths and it goes down with generally no problem.
i started my son on goldfish crackers first. they are small and can be crunched up easily.
In the baby food section at the supermarket they have some special snacks for babys that sort of dissolve when they put them in thier mouths. They have the same consistency as a cheeto. I don't remember what they are called, but I'm sure you can find them in any store.
Hello,
I have a nine month old son and he has been self feeding for about a month now. He loves the Gerber Graduates Finger Foods, specifically the Puffs. They are small enough for him to pick up with his index finger and thumb, which helps him to develop hand, eye and mouth coordination. They melt once in the mouth immediately (I know because I tried them. They taste great) but he will still be able to crunch them, which of course teaches him to chew.
Gerber has a type of cracker for that very purpose.i think it called a biter bar i am not sure but you should be able to find it with the gerber graduates stuff. It is kind of like a cookie. They hold it and chew and suck on it.
My children are four and three years old but, when my children were teething we bought bitter biscuits made by gerber graduates I think. It's like a really thick graham cracker that is made just right for the baby or tots hands to hold. Gerber also makes fruit and veggie bites that are little bites but dissolove in baby;s mouth so they don;t chock to easily!
Best of luck!
E.
I give my baby Ritz crackers and they just melt in his mouth. I do sit there with him because sometimes he gets a bigger chunk, but I've never had a problem with them.

My son is 9 months old (no teeth yet) and we've started to let him feed himself. The best things we have found are the Gerber Graduates Finger Foods. They are little fruit or veggie flavored puffs that dissolve in their mouth. They are small enough for your son to grab and the dissolve fast enough that he won't choke. Another thing we have tried are the Gerber Graduates for Toddlers "L'il Crunchers". They're shaped like puffed Cheetos, but don't make a mess. These also dissolve fairly quickly.
i have two kids 2 years old, and while there are a lot of baby treats out there, i found nothing better than Club Crackers. They just dissolve better than anything else and they are not as clumpy as graham crackers or the aerated crackers. they have some fat in them, and that is good for growing brains, as opposed to just carbs as in many starter crackers. also, they are salty which makes the baby drink more and you need them to drink some apple juice when starting crackers, to avoid constipation.
my kids both ate club crackers before they were 6 months old, or had teeth, so i think you are safe.
on biter biscuits, they are intended for children who are just working on their first teeth for gnawing, not truly biting. once babies get good at biting, they are not recommended as they are hard and come apart in large chunks.
my son is 8 months old as well. he has 2 teeth on the bottom and has 2 more on top comming in. he really seems to like the gerber biter biscuts, and cheerios. as well as the cinnimon graham crackers and gerber finger foods... sweet puffs. they come in veggie and fruit flavors (the greber puffs). the onkly ones he had a few problems with was the graham crackers but once he got the hang.... well he loves em now!! hope i helped out some!! take care ~~H~~
I gave my daughter biter biscuits, they are part of the graduates line. They are in the baby isle and they are individually wrapped crackers that are long and skinny so they can grip them better. They make a huge mess but my daughter loved them. I also gave her ritz crackers. She never seemed to have a problem with choking. Good luck!!
This sounds weird, but I gave my daughter celery sticks (whole ones, just shortened to about 4 inches long so it wasn't so awkward). It's cold and with the strings in it, it stayed together even though she gnawed on it. Plus it's super cheap.
Hi L.
My daughter is also 8 months, and has one bottom tooth. Just last week I started giving her a biter biscuit (from Gerber) every now and then, and she LOVES it. They dissolve easily from sucking on them, but beware, they are MESSY MESSY!!
Also, Gerber puffs are a favorite here too, they dissolve very quickly in the mouth and have lots of flavors.
My daughter is almost 9 months, and she has 8 teeth already..she cut her bottom 2 at 3 1/2 months, and then her top 4 (at the same time) at 7 months..we had been giving her biter biscuits and zwieback toasts, and club crackers...she did really good with them, we also did cheerios (she's a cheerio addict now) and low-sodium ritz, salt-free saltines, goldfish (she loooves the cheddar ones), and well, shes now on table foods for the most parts. But I recommend the zwieback toast, be sure to read the ingredients for allergies though..also the biter biscuits..but if you want more food for your buck, go with crackers..club crackers, ritz, and what not :) GOOD LUCK :)
My daughter is 2 1/2 now but when she was little we loved Gerber. For begining solids, they have a great variety of stuff. There are some "toast sticks" (can't remember the exact name) that Madeline loved. She would spend 30 min. on one. They are hard but great for little teeth to scrape on and dissolve well. They do get messy sometimes but totally worth it. They also have these things called Gerber Puffs that dissolve almost on contact but are more like cereal. Try the toast though, its hard enough that big chunks (aka choking hazard) don't come off but good for scraping and practicing food holding and self feeding. Great for a snack!!! The whole Gerber Graduates line is good though and designed specifically for youngsters just starting out. Hope this helps!
Gerber makes a lot of foods that disolve in the mouth really quickly. You can find them in the baby food isle at the store. I get the little strawberry and apple stars, and the sweet corn flavors. They are really small so they fit really well in her tiny hand too! My eight month old has been eating them since she was 6 months and she loves them. She immediately learned how to gum her food. It must be a natural instinct. Don't worry so much about him choking. Especially if he already has teeth. My daughter doesn't have any yet and does just fine. Good luck.
Hi
Zwieback Toast is a good first cracker because they don't splinter and break into pieces in their mouths and they have a texture that seems interesting for babies (sort of rough). Plus no sugar. They just gnaw and slobber on them and they sort of melt. Get them on the baby food isle.
I started my daughter on all the gerber graduate cookies/crackers. They melt super fast in the babies mouth. My daughter loves them. I also give her goldfish and graham crackers.
