Seeking Advice on Weaning Pacifier

My son is 4 1/2 months. He was born 3 weeks early and 4 lbs 9 oz. At his 4 month check up he had only gained 1/2 lb. He is 9 lbs now, 22 inches. I think the pacifier has interfered with feedings. He seems to want to suck all the time. He started to become a finicky eater. Nothing has changed with my diet and it was after I had my period. My period returned at about 2 months. This weekend I took the paci away and now he seems to want to use me as the paci. It is fine some times but last night he would not let me sleep. I fianlly pulled him into bed with me attached to my breast. Any suggestions on how to stop this? I also recently started him on cereal and he is doing great with that. I just need him to gain weight and i need to see if the paci was the issue.

It sounds like he was light weight to start with. What does your pediatrician say about his weight? In my experience the need to self sooth with sucking is still strong at this age. Try only letting him use the pacifier at nap/sleep times. Give him plenty of time to nurse and don't let him fall asleep nursing. Keep him up until he's gotten his 40 min (or what your ped. recommends) of nursing in or if you're using bottles you might want to use them to measure out the milk so you know how much he's getting. I found using the EASY (Eat, Activity, Sleep, You time) system worked well to start. But I also found that sometimes my daughter was just plain hungry sooner than I had planned to feed her but I let her set the schedule since I had no way to know exactly how much milk she was getting nursing.

Hope this helps.

It seems to me that you are doing the right thing. It may be a drag, but breastfeeding all night if it helps him gain weight may be the best temporary solution. That is what I would do in your shoes. I didn't wean my son from the paci until he was maybe 14-15 months old. By then we had limited it to home use, then we limited it to bedtime use and then one day we just told him it went away and that was that. We did the same thing with his morning bottle of milk when we transferred him to a sippy cup full time.
I would do this for a little while, see if it helps him gain weight and then when you are ready, slowly start to limit your nursing time to specific times. Then you'll be off the paci and breastfeeding won't be so overwhelming.
Good Luck!

let him be attached to you for now...having him in the bed with you wont hurt him or you and will actually help you both.remeber, he should have stayed inside of you attached to you almost a month more!!! so he needs to be close to you...the more he is near you the more he will eat...he can smell your milk and it will stimulate his hunger/feedings...later, when he's gained weight, etc...give him back his pacifier...it wont hurt a thing...if he's 3 and still has one u can put it in the mailbox for the pacifer for the "paci fairy" to come and get and replace it with a handful of glitter and a cool big boy toy!(can u tell ive been there?) baies tell u exactly what they need. he is not trying to manipulate u or getting "spoiled". its impossible at this tender young age. he is expressing his needs to you. the best thing you can do for him and for you is to fill them...and 3 weeks premature makes a big difference...people dont understand that....ps...theres no such thing as sleep with a prem. new baby...ever...lol...and with on time baby...its a delightful bit of good luck if you do get 4 hours...hang in there...and just keep him happy, fed and secure....it will get better.

Use the paci if you need it.. just once he is asleep try pulling the pacifier out.. usually they fall sound asleep after 10-15 minutes of being asleep. JUst let him have the paci when he is sleeping not when he is awake. Try giving him the cereal before sleep at night.. this will help him get a good nights sleep. good luck
