My 17 year old son was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. With all of the headaches (high blood pressure)and fatigue, his grades have suffered. We are starting the paperwork for a 504 plan. A friend suggested this as a way to help salvage his junior year. I'm a teacher but have never been involved in this process before. As a parent your heartstrings are being yanked pretty hard!! Any and all advice will be gratly appreciated.

What can I do next?

My daugther has been in the 504 plan for 4 years and his helped you so much. I don't think she would of made to the fifth grade without it. As long as the teacher is willing to do it is require them to. I had one year that the teacher did not. So I guess I am saying that I would allow him to get on to the 504 plan A.S.A.P. It will help greatly
It will allow him to have more time for studying for tests. If he is having problems with anything else they will work with him until he gets were he is suppost to be.
I hope this will help with your decision.

I used to teach first grade and special education. I think it is a great idea for your son to be on a 504 plan. This will help him out tremendously. Be sure to get all the accomodations you think he will need to be successful. It is a fairly simple process (or it was in FL). Most importantly after it has been put in place, I would be sure to check with your son and his teachers to be sure it is being followed. Good luck.

The 504 plan is simply an action plan that the school puts in place to allow him to catch up with his grades. It is a simple process and it helps him in the long run. It is nothing to fear and it will do him good if he hadn't had a good year previously. This will help him graduate on time. Good luck.

Why are you afraid? Section 504 will just provide him with accomodations to help make his time in school more successful! If he needs a homebound teacher when he is out sick or hospitialized, he'll get it, extra time on tests, extra days for make-up work and preferential scheduling are just a few of the other accomodations that might be suggested. Really sit down with his case manager and let them know you are apprehensive. They will work with you and your son to come up with the best plan for him.

I've had two diabetic students and this year currently teach two students with sickle cell disease. I've enjoyed working with them all and have nothing but good things to say about them and their parents.

Talk to the school teacher/admin about getting your son considred OHI (health impairment) Type 2 diabetes is considered the norm for this plan. When they get that started you will likely have a SST meeting and get the ball running to get a 504 plan set up. Hope this helps!
