Seeking Advice/experiences Re: Eye Surgery

My 3 year old boy has been having itchy eyes since August. The pediatrician thought it was allergies and prescribed Veramyst. That didn't work so I took him to the opthamologist today because I noticed that eye lashes were turning inward at the corners of each eye. After examination, the opthamologist recommended surgery to split the lid in the corners and remove the skin that has a short second row of eye lashes which are growing inward. Has anyone dealt with this type of surgery before? Thank you.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses! Damon had his eye surgery on Tuesday and he's doing great. He was only under for about 20 minutes and had no adverse effects from the anesthesia. Children's Hospital is awesome. The doctors and nurses were all very kind, helpful and patient with all of our questions.

Hi B.! I happen to work for a group of Ophthalmologists in SLO! We have one of the finest Pediatric Ophthalmologists in our practice! I have assisted in many of these types of procedures, and I can tell you that each case is very individual, personal, and should be considered from every angle, but first and foremost, you should really know and trust your doctor! I strongly believe that every age should see a practitioner that treats a minimum of 85% of that age group. Meaning, that if your particular doctor only sees small children occasionally, rather than daily, I would seek another physician. The reason behind this, is that someone can be a fantastic doctor, but if they cannot relate to you, than you need to find a doctor who specializes in your particular age group, and for children, they should always be seen by some type of Pediatric Physician!
That being said, this type of lid condition is very common, and the procedure that you are describing, sounds typical of the course of treatment. Children often do very well with most surgeries, and bounce back very quickly! But surgery is surgery! If you aren't already a patient of San Luis Obispo Eye Associates, I recommend Dr. Rena Stathacoupolous with the highest compliments. I hope this helped!

Hi B., I had this done when I was a toddler as well. I am sure they are more advanced than when I was a kid. I am not sure what you want to know but just send me a message and I will try and answer your questions.

I have a friend whose daughter had this done a few years ago at the age of three. My friend stressed and stressed, debated back and forth whether to have it done, went through tremendous anxiety regarding putting her child through surgery -- and it ended up being very easy. Her daughter's eye problems were gone for good, recovery was very fast, and in retrospect, the most difficult part was the mental angst my friend put herself through.

i have never had to deal with this however, you need to be informed. do your research about this doctor and most importantly find out who your anesthesiologist is. This is a surgery as with any surgery your child will be put to sleep, wheter it is brain surgery or this "simple" surgery, surgery is surgery and you should make sure the anesthesiaologist has worked on children before.

One of my sons has had lots of eye surgeries for many reasons. One we haven't done is the lashes, but, he has a different lash problem. Eye surgeries are pretty quick. and, we have seen just about every pediatric eye surgeon in O county-so, if you need an opinion, I have plenty. My favorite is Jennifer Simpson at UCI. Good luck.
