Hello Mommies!

First off Happy Mother's Day to you all! My oldest daughter is pregnant with her 2nd child (another beautiful boy). She is 37 weeks pregnant, and just saw the doctor for swelling and pain at and around her belly button. She was told it was a perinial umbilical hernia. I have never heard about a pregnant woman getting this, and I've had 4 of my own lol. Does anyone know more about this? The doc called it a perinial C ?umbilical hernia, my daughter can't remember the full name of it.. maybe Congential?
Can this cause more problems for her? The doc gave her vistral and told her to go home and rest. While there they monitored her for contractions and some showed but they were light ones, so it may be soon :). Thanks for any help and info you can give to me, this just makes me nervous. Not only for the baby, but for MY baby.

Thanks
T.

Hi there. I got a hernia when I was about 20 weeks pregnant with my daughter. I felt better when I didn't lift over about 10 lbs. I had a c-section for delivery and we scheduled for a surgeon to be there at the time of the delivery. Therefore, they delivered the baby and fixed my hernia all at the same time. The c-section recovery is longer than the hernia recovery so it worked out great for me.

I think the term you are looking for is "perinatal" umbilical hernia. It's a hernia of the abdominal wall that develops during pregnancy. Actually, she might have had the weakening of the abdominal muscle before she was pregnant - it's hard to know. If she was already planning on a c-section, they could arrange to have a surgeon there to repair the hernia after the baby is delivered - during the same surgery. But, it's not worth electing to have a c-section just for that. Her doctor will probably refer her to a surgeon for a consult a few weeks after the baby is delivered. It depends how much problem it causes her right now whether she has it fixed soon. Encourage her to relax these last few weeks. The baby will come when it's ready. Good luck!

I had this, but mine did not cause me any major problems. It is basically just that your belly button is going the wrong direction! It doesn't really cause any major problems. My doc did say that if I started having major abdominal pain etc, I need to contact them asap. I didn't really understand it until I did some online research. There really wasn't much info out there. I hope this helps!

I believe I have one and my mother had one. I have done nothing to it. It is irritating in that clothes will never will fit the same and it some times is tender but outside of that nothing has happened due to it. My mother had 5 kids and I had 4 and I won't get it fixed until I have to. They warned me if I ever get poker hot pain there to go to the hospital because a bowel has got stuck there. No other recommendations from the doctors.
