Seeking a DAN Pediatrician for My Autistic Son

Hi everyone. This weekend I attended an Autism conference focusing on the Biomedical approach to the treatment of Autism. The method is called DAN (Defeat Autism Now). I would love to know if anyone has visited a pediatrician who has specialised in that philosophy, and if you could recommend them to me. Thanks so much!

I second Margaret S. about going to see an NAET practitioner. Their website is www.naet.com I am getting treated now by a practitioner for allergies and asthma, but they also help with Autism. (as well as many other ailments)

don't know the ped, but know good homeopath who comes to LA at least once a month. he is the one who has helped Amy Lansky's autistic son to become fully functional (she wrote a book about it, don't remember the title exactly, something like "unlikely cure" - it'll come up if you do the search.) he may or may not work solo in LA, his residence is up North - John Melnychuk
Good Luck

There is a doctor in Tarzana named Dr. Michael Goldberg, who lots of people really really like www.neuroimmunedr.com. He is not necessarily "DAN" but he does recover kids from autism and other ailments. He believes more in healing the immune system so the body can repair itself. He focuses on viral issues, diet (though not as strict a diet as DAN), some supplements, etc. I would inquire with him for sure. We did DAN for over three years and yes, our son is basically recovered, although extremely borderline/mild all along. We did the GFCF diet, MB12 shots, supplements, and finally chelation, which I believe recovered him since he had a heavy metal overload and the chelation got rid of that. Also, Dr. Lin in Irvine supposed to be good. Dr. Mary Berry in Anaheim Hills supposed to excellent. A DAN may be a supplement to your pediatrician but you may have to have another dr for your ped who you just use when you have minor illnesses or whatever. NO SHOTS for your son is my very forward advice. DO NOT listen to the media saying there is no connection between vaccines and autism. I know plenty of people whose kids turned overnight after receiving vaccines. Big bucks can cover up anything! I would research and start the GFCF diet right now on your own. Also, make a smoothie for your son and put a probiotic in there (PB8 is available at a health food store) and also a teaspoon of cod liver oil (Carlsons liquid) in the smoothie as well. Just do those few things on your own before you get into see a dr. You will see results on your own and get yourself started on the path to recovery. Good luck. I know this isnt' easy but kids DO get better and recover so hang in there and stay positive!!!! Kelly McKinnon and Associates in SJC amazing place for social skills!!!! I would check out Dr. Goldberg first if I were you. That is who we would go to today if we were going to see someone.

A big YEAH to you J. for wanting to be proactive with your son's issues.

The BEST place (IMHO) to start is with the TACA website. They have a list of resourses and there will be the DAN doctors in your area. A am assuming that you are in So CA so know that we have lots of choices based on where you live and what you feel would be a good approach for your child. Another great thing to do is get on the yahoo group for TACA USA. You will have families from all over the country to bounce ideas off of and ask things of. Know you are not alone - one out of 100 children with autism and 1 out of 38 are boys. I am wondering why our country is not up in arms about this...

I was there too! Did you stop by my booth for Sensaria Natural Bodycare?

One of the Senior DAN doctors just moved to Southern CA. His name is Dr. Jeff Bradstreet and he is very well informed. You can try to reach him at ###-###-####. You can also google his name and his FL office will come up. I believe his nurse in FL may be scheduling him for CA.

I don't know a pediatrician, but wanted to tell you about AIT. Our son has PDD and we did AIT (auditory integration training) with him. The results were DRAMATIC. It literally brought him out of his shell, and he grew a year of speech skills in just a couple months. Turns out it was originally brought to the states because of the positive results it has with autistic children. All it is is a listening therapy where the child listens to headphones for two 1/2 hours per day for 10 days.

We got ours done at The Learning Gym (http://learninggymusa.com) in Manhattan Beach. The guy who created it is Dr. Guy Berard. He wrote the book "Hearing Equals Behavior" which has case studies of success. It's truly an amazing therapy and I think all kids on the spectrum should be offered this first. Our son was 6 when he first got it, and I think of the years of therapy we could have saved if he had had it sooner.

HTH,
B.

are you on Peachhead2 - it's a yahoo group for parents in LA. 10,000 members. Maybe if you post there someone will know someone.

Lots of LA people are on it, local doula's (they'd know) and pediatrician Dr. Jay Gordon.
