Seasonal Allergies

Most doctors won't prescribe anything for a 1 year old. They usually will not diagnosis seasonal allergies or even asthma until at least 2 yr. If the doctor decides to use an antihistamine, I would go with claritin over benadryl. It has less side effects and is safer to use.

Check with your doctor, because weight is very important for figuring meds.
Cool mist humidifier and a HEPA air filter in the bedroom at night is important.
The air filter is the one you should get today!!!!

I agree with Carrie that local honey (a teaspoon a day) is great if he's old enough. I personally didn't give my little one honey until age two. Elderberry syrup or extract is great too and is safe for even infants. It boosts the immune system so his little body can fight off the allergens on it's own.

I am not sure what is available for 1 yr olds, I would talk to a pharmacist.
I do know though (as weird as this may seem) if you keep your home too clean and always use antibacterial cleaners you actually cause allergies in your children. Allgeries are the immune system going overboard. A person needs some germs and bacteria in their system so the immune system can learn to fight them. If there are no germs present the immune system will attack harmless things like dust, pet dander etc thus form allergies.

Check with your Dr, but I believe after 1 yr you can give them honey. If you can get honey that is from your area, that helps a ton with allergies - I know it sounds weird, but it really works!!

I would say Benadryl or any other antihistamine, but you should definitely check with your doctor since he's so young -- or with someone who knows more than me :) My son has had seasonal allergies since he was a baby. I never gave him anything for it when he was tiny, just tried to keep his outdoor time limited during the spring and fall months. That seemed to help. I bet your doctor could direct you to an appropriate over-the-counter medication if you just gave him or her a quick call though.

My son just turned six and we've been dealing with seasonal allergies since he was 18 months old. I would discuss the subject with your son's pedi to find out what meds he can take and at what dosages. He is so young that he will probably not be able to take allergy meds, but maybe Benadryl on really bad days. Good luck!
