N.B.
I would just make sure it was non-slip.
I took a nasty spill on my deck a couple weekends ago. Since then I have healed my aching back/neck, cleaned and pressure washed the deck. Now I'm ready to seal it. I'm trying to decide between a clear sealant or a lightly tinted one. If you used something that was tinted, does your deck look like it has been painted or is it more like a traditional wood stain?
I would just make sure it was non-slip.
The sealants/stains we have used usually look more like paint. They are thicker so that the wood is protected.
The down side is that the color will fade, but the clear ones usually have to get redone also.
It's in between a stain and a paint. It can change the color really significantly, but you still see the grain of the wood through it.
Either way, and no matter what brand we choose, we have to do it every year, because it starts to peel off. So far we've tried Behr and Thomspon's. If anyone knows a brand that lasts more than 1 year, I'd love to hear about it.
We did the Thompson's Water Seal with the tint. It looks more like a traditional wood stain- you still see the wood through the stain. It's not a heavy tint either .Just a little bit of color. So far one application has lasted about 2 years- it's time to do it again!
Textured DeckOver by Behr!
We just finished O. deck with it and are planning to use it on our pool deck as well.
The question is - do you like the current color now that it has been washed? If you do, then clear is the way to go. If you want it darker, then use a little bit of tint. It will not look painted.
If you use the Behr that is recommended below, that will look like paint.
OPO - I plan to use that this summer on my deck. Although I'd prefer to stray from the painted look, I think it will work really well for my needs.
