I went on a cruise with my family in April. I bought chewable ginger pills at Whole foods and they worked great. They were safe for my 3 yr old and my whole extended family were coming into my room to get some.
Hi moms. My family is going on a cruise in September leaving port in Orlando,FL.
I get motion sickness really easy so plan on using the seasick patch. I'm worried that my children will too. What can I use to ease their discomfort so they can enjoy their time?

I am very prone to motion sickness. I went on a dolphin cruise off the coast in Florida and they sold me on Motion Eaze. It is A. oil you put on the soft tissue area behind your ear. It WORKED BEAUTIFULLY! I was not motion sick at all. The best thing about it is it's all natural so you can reapply as often as needed and children can take it too. I reapplied about every 2 hours and was never sick. This coming from a lady who gets sick on a 30 minute ferry ride. They have a website - www.motioneaze.com I know they'll ship it to you or you can find someone locally who sells it by contacting them. I think my girlfriend picked some up in North Dallas, but I can't remember where.
Have a wonderful time!

they have these wrist band things you wear that works on the pressure points...i have used them and doesnt make me sick...also there is dramimine (sp?) you can get either one at cvs, walgreens, walmart, etc.....hope this helps you...
We went on a cruise in Sept. and you will definitely need something. It is hurricane season in Sept. so the waters are always choppy. We went in the middle of Hurricane Ivan and I was sick the entire time. Luckily, we had a nurse and a doctor at our table for dinner every night and they gave me some stuff. But they told me that before I go next time, to go to my Dr. before and get the patch that goes behind your ear...it's a prescription so you need to visit your Dr. to get it. I saw people on board with the patches and I asked them about it and they all said they were working wonderfully. So, next time, I am for sure doing that. I just wish I had known that before I left for the cruise. That is my suggestion. Hope it helps. :)
Seabands work well. They come in child sizes and can be found at Target and Walgreens. They go on your childs wrist and hit the accupressure point to prevent sea/motion sickness. Have fun on your trip.
it's not the most convenient thing in the world, but my hubby is a nurse and all the docs as well as his physiology profs said that if you take A. ice cube or something very cold and hold it up to your carotid arteries (that lead to your brain...the ones on the outermost edge of your neck) it will go away. Has something to do with cooling down the blood to your head a bit...works like a charm for car or boat. Good luck!!!
DON'T USE THE PATCH! I am A. RN and I used the patch on my first cruise. By the 2nd day I became deathly ill with severe pain, had to go to the clinic on the ship in the middle of the night, thought I was having a heart attack, got A. EKG, the whole thing! The ship's physician immediately removed the patch and washed the area, told me lots of people have trouble with those and in some countries they are OUTLAWED. I have motion sickness just going to the store, but on the 2nd cruise I used mind over matter and never had any problems. however, the Gulf cruise was not too bad (motion wise). I may try some of the ideas I've read here, though, the next time I go. Have fun! ~ N.
Seabands! They work well for morning sickness and general nausea when you are sick.

Looks like you have gotten some good response but I thought I'd chime in as well...
My hubby and I went on a 7 day cruise on a private charter -- so it was a smaller boat. We went with a group and we were all encouraged to get the patch. I don't normally get sea sick but I did use the patch because of the size of the boat.
I used the patch for 4 days and started having trouble seeing things up close. Well, I am 43 so I thought it was just old age setting in. By the 6th day I mentioned it to someone else and they said that was a side-effect of the patch. Well, you are only to use one patch every 3 days. Mine kept coming off in the water so I used 4 patches in 7 days not knowing how long the medicine would stay in your system.
Well, I get home and my left pupil was huge and I felt really weird for about 3 days. I did talk with my doc and she said that I had probably OD'd on the drug that was on the patches.
SO, I would definitely recommend trying something other than the patch. The last thing you want is to get on the boat and get sick.
Check the size of the boat. We went on Disney and the boat we were on was 964 ft long and 88,000 tons. When we were on the boat, you couldn't even tell you were on water.
My husband had the same problem and we have been on 2 cruises. He went to a local pharmacy, Walgreens or CVS, and bought these wristbands, he loved them! Ask the pharmacist and they can direct you about different products that are available. On the ship, I saw lots of people wearing what looked like circular bandaids behind their ears. I think they purchased those on the ship. Good luck!
Ginger works real well. Start taking the pills a few days before you go on your cruise and continue taking them while on the cruise. It should help.
I also have trouble with motion sickness. I have been on 5 cruises and never have been sick. On one of the cruises, it was pretty rough one evening but, I never got sick. I don't like the patches because they cause drowsiness. The bands supposedly work. The higher tonnage of the ship makes a difference because it helps with the movement you feel. Your ship out of Florida should be fairly large. There is also a prescription you can get from your doctor. I can't remember the name. I think it begins with a B. I never had to take it so it was a waste of money but, since it is your first cruise, better safe than sorry. I went on a cruise in late September out of San Juan and it was very smooth sailing.
Taking a ginger root supplement can help without the drowsy meds. Also, they sell "Sea Bands" in the medication isles that help by pressure points on the wrists.
Try ginger (you can buy capsules or somehow sneak it into their drinks), sometimes you can find ginger lozenges or candies. Also try vitamin B6, I used to take that as a kid before long car trips and it helped. Have fun!
I get motion sickness just in a car
so was so worried over sea sickness that I wore the patch. The patch ruined the first 3 days of my cruise! It makes you have the most excruciating head ache and ruins your appetite. I found seabands @ walgreens they are bracelets w little knobs that touch specific points on your wrists they have child sized ones too. I never had any more problems. The patch is awful!
