Within like the last two weeks, everynight when we put our daughter to bed, within an hour she is coughing and crying and screaming. I have removed stuffed animals and the plant that was in her room. I have dusted, swept, and cleaned the sheets repeatly and no change. When she sleeps in our bedroom she fine. no coughing, no crying, no screaming. I don't know what is going on. I don't see anything in her room that would cause this. My sister (who is a doctor) thought it might be allergies, but I don't think so. What do you all think?
OHHH, she is 3 years old

What can I do next?

Hello!
Could it be that she is too warm? My oldest, now 5, has bad dreams, incl crying in her sleep, when she gets too warm while sleeping. Especially as the seasons change and there is no consistency in the night time temps, what was fine last night will be too warm the next and we have issues.
Just a thought.
Hope you find out soon!

I'm not sure how old your daughter is, but she may have reflux. Or asthma. Lots of times, asthma isn't really just an 'attack', but more of a cough that's made worse when they lay down, which is brought on by allergies. My daughter gets that occasionally, but she doesn't scream and cry. Then again, she's 7.

Have you asked her? Does she not know/remember what brings it on? My older daughter had a few night terrors at this age, very strange and scary, maybe that's what it is.

what is not in your room that is in hers. If it is allergies you have to figure out what her room has and your room doesn't in order to figure out her trigger and get rid of that item. Sounds like she might be cough variant asthmatic too. give her some benedryl in case it is allergies. if your sister is local have her check her to see if she is having an asthma attack. IF it is a dust allergy you dusting and sweeping will keep her fired up. And if you are using A diffrent scent laundry soap for her sheets than yours it might be your laundry detergent. Also go to lowes and get a mold test and test her room. Mold is hidden and a major allergy trigger.

Sounds to me more like separation anxiety.

Or just plain wrapping you around her finger to get what she wants.

I think she is playing you and trying to avoid the bed.

I just had a case like this and she is totally playing you. Kids are smart. You can try everything else but I would bet she has found a way to sleep with mom. Do not underestimate her.

My son did the same thing a year ago. It did turn out to be an allergy to milk. He would drink milk with dinner but not cough till he was laying in bed. Then he couldn't sleep due to the cough. As he was 9 at the time, he didn't cry or scream but he was cranky when he didn't get enough sleep. The doctor prescribed a cough medicine specifically for his type of cough and we restricted his milk intake - problem solved. Please check for allergies first, then work on the behavior issues. Good Luck

does she sleep differently in your room than hers?
My kids have asthma and when they sleep on their backs they cough.
IS there a fan in her room that isn't in yours , lately when my kids leave their ceiling fan on at night they cough.

Could she be having nightmares or terrors which cause her to cry and scream which brings on the coughing?
