Hi Ladies
I need your help with some summer fun. I have decided to take the kids to the zoo tomorrow but want to make it more interesting/fun (we go there quite often). I would like to do a scavenger hunt with them. The only problem is I am not very creative and can't think of any clues for them. So I want to basically have them looking for animals using rhyming clues, and get a small prize at the end for finding all the animals on the list. I know there are lots of mamas out there that could get me started with the rhymes.
Some of the animals they love to see are............monkeys, lions, tigers, polar bears, prairie dogs (has a viewing station for the kids at ground level), giraffes, frogs, alligators/reptile house etc etc.
Looking forward to your answers!
ADDED: The kids are 5 (almost 6) and 8 (both boys). The 8 year old reads very well. The 5 year old would need help with reading.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies. You really got my brain switched into rhyming mode. With your help, I managed to come up with 16 rhyming clues for different animals. I can't wait to get the kids to the zoo tomorrow.

tigers, "what has stripes and lives somewhere hot? is it something you want to see in the parking lot?" (kinda corny :P)

polar bear, "what can hide in the snow, slide on their belly and drink coke at the same time?"

monkey, "what swings up in the trees, way up in the sky? Going from tree to tree, it seems to fly"

frogs, "what hops on land and can swim with you? it's colors can be green, red, and blue."

giraffe, "what's brown and yellow and stands so tall? His name is Geoffrey and he's not small"

is a groundhog the same as a prairie dog? if so you can do "he sees his shadow and lets you know whether or not there will be more snow."

lions, "the have a mane, and are like the kittys you see, but i wouldn't want one if it were me"

snakes(reptile house), "they slither around since they have no legs, they live in the ground, in trees and they lay eggs."

hmm. this is a tough one. I mean, if you knew ahead of time what the little placards say, you could do something like:
"One Fish, two fish, red fish blue fish.
How many Fish does an average polar bear eat every day?"

"How can you tell whether it's an alligator or a crocodile?"

"What is the average height of a baby giraffe?"

My brain's not working for rhymes today. (Too hot here in TX).

I think what you're looking for more might be like:
"I"m tall, I'm lean. I eat lots of green. I am a _________ (giraffe)!"
"I'm furry and white. I'm hot in the sun. When I'm skating on ice, I have lots of fun. I am a _______ (polar bear)."

Zoo Animal Hunt
Can be sung to the tune of “I’m a little teapot.”

I’m a skinny reptile, scaly and green,
I have no feet, I look squeaky clean,
I slither through the rain forest like a queen,
Mammals are my favorite type of cuisine.

I’m a feathery friend, brown and white,
I sleep in the day, I hunt at night,
I hoot in the woods giving people a fright,
Eating mice helps suppress my appetite.

I’m a large mammal, furry and tan,
I am a carnivore, I hunt in a caravan,
I hang in the savanna with my clan,
Napping most of the day is my plan.

I’m a slimy amphibian, green and brown,
I like to sing, I never frown,
I hop in a pond on the side of town,
Eating insects while I jump up and down.

This may seem silly, so please forgive me if you have already done this, but have you looked at the zoo's webpage? Many zoo's have this type of thing already created for teachers to use when they bring their students. Here is the link to our local zoo's resources. I found it under Education - Teachers- self guided tours and scavenger hunts.

Added: I am presuming that you are going to the Detroit Zoo; if so, here is the link to their stuff...

Have fun!

How old are the kids and can they read or are old enough to read... the clues?

-- Just go with regular clues. Trying to 'rhyme' everything will be arduous.

Go by meat eaters, plant eaters, nocturnal, diurnal, mammals, reptiles, predators, non-predators, etc.
The types of animals or their coloring/camouflage etc.
Terrestrial or not, etc.
