There have been many I am sad to say. No matter how hard you try to be good, something happens. First time was when my oldest son was O. and just learned to walk and he tripped and fell headfirst onto the tile when walking towards me. Then he didn't move. I went to pick him up and his body was limp, pale face and lips. I called 911 and then he started to cry while I was on the phone. He ended up with a bruise and needing a scan in the emergency room. He was okay.

Oh, I had several with my youngest who is now 17. He just got his car. Last Friday night he was going to see his friend play in a concert with his band. The other boy's parents were driving them since they were coming back so late. He was to spend the night at their house. When I called to see when he was coming home ( he had texted me from the friend's phone that his phone was dead) the friend said he wasn't there. I asked when he had left--3 am!!! I just panicked. I called 911. While on the phone with 911 my cell rang and it was my son. He had charged his phone and was at another friend's house. He is in major trouble! I have not talked to the other parents. If I find out they knew he left, I will never let him go there again.

O. time My youngest was running the highest of fevers, all red and shaking, her body wouldnt un-stretch out of the fetal position and she was not acting like herself.

I was so freaked out, definitely my scariest moment.

I ended up just cooling her down with a damp rag, near a fan, her fever subsided but remained a low fever for the remainder of the day.

My son was kidnapped by his father when he was 5 years old. He was taken out of the U.S., and to Nigeria where his father is a citizen. I didn't see him for 10 years, 9 months.

Scared is not the word, it was hell, particularly on him.

When my daughter was 6 I could no longer pick her up from school and needed her to start taking the bus. I walked her to the bus stop and reassured her that I would be waiting there when she returned from schoo. That afternoon when the bus arrived at our stop she wasn't on it. It turns out the bus driver mistakenly made her get off the bus several blocks away (she even told him that she didn't live near there, but he thought she was confused). He drove back around but didn't see her. It was a bitterly cold January day in Chicago and my baby was outside in the dark by herself. I was terrified that someone had taken her or that she had tried to cross the snow covered pond or river near us and fallen in. After 3 hours of the police, school officals, neighbors, and family searching she was finally found. She was hiding in some bushes and scared to come out because strangers were calling her name and she had no idea where she was. When previously explaining to her about strangers I had told her that I would never send anyone to pick her up except her aunt or grandparents. She was afraid that the people looking for her were bad people. Thankfully she was safe and only had mild hypothermia.

We were at a Festival downtown over Memorial Weekend.

We had gone Friday night and it was not crowded or busy...So, we had planned on going back on Saturday.

Wow wow wow Saturday was wall to wall people.

My Four year old got lost within five minutes of parking it somewhere.

I was scared outta my mind.

After about fifteen minutes of wandering around frantic, I finally found someone working the Festival who walkie talkied someone and they had him at the first Aide tent.

He told me he knew he should find the oldest person possible. and that is exactly what he did. I was so Thankful for her!!

From that day on, any time we go somewhere that has the potential to be crowed, we label them with Permanent marker, phone number and moms cell number. That way they can get help and in contact with me.

He also has learned that he can not just walk off.

By far the scariest thing ever.

When I found my unconscious 3 year old son, with blue lips and not breathing. I watched my husband give him rescue breaths while I was on the phone with 911. It turns out that he had a febrile seizure and he is fine. But, I think my heart stopped beating and I broke down when I watched my husband giving him those rescue breaths, because I thought we'd lost him.

Lordy - I've had several. Older son had febrile seizures. He also had many sets of stitches. (He's extreme ADHD) Been through ruptured appendix, many high fevers - youngest had a 106 in the ER and was STILL playing with his toy cars.

The worst by far - was my 16 year old having a massive heart attack in front of me, while we were walking together in the Country. Then the second with her was sending her to transplant surgery, knowing that if it didn't work, she would die. The third with her was the day the doctor said she had lymphoma. And yes, she's made it through it all.

My youngest son has had 2 seizures, both in a 2 month time frame. O. of the scariest things I've been through because he doesn't twitch, shake or convulse. He just falls over. He has the kind of seizure where his brain just shuts down. Both times we ended up at the ER. He's now medicated and just a normal kid who just happens to need anti-seizure meds.

The other scariest moment with him (happily his siblings are much easier on me) was when he slammed the bathroom door in his brothers face and caught his own finger. He turned ash gray and vomited and fainted from the pain. Another trip to the ER. He had not only broken the finger, but also ripped the nail off the bed and cut the nail bed. The kid must be tough as nails but he is turning my hair gray.

OMG JILL Y!!! NOOO! These are frightening.

My oldest (when she was 18 months) bolted under a dressing room door when I was shirtless trying on bras. When I ran out (shirt but no bra) I couldn't see which way she went because of all of the racks. I wandered aimlessly yelling and getting clerks to call security. A family intercepted her WAY FAR AWAY in the opposite direction I was looking by a mall entrance :(

My son tripped sprinting at 2 and hit his ear on the sharp corner of a baseboard heater. He was bleeding profusely from his ear, so I thought he dislodged his brain. At the ER, the doc found a tiny little cut in the fold of his outer ear. No idea how it bled so much.

So far I feel very lucky...knock on wood.

What about you, Denise?

Ours was when our son was about 10 months old. We were shoping in Target and had him buckled into the cart and cart cover. My DH was looking at t-shirts and asked me a question. I turned for just a second and next thing we know DS was hanging upside down out the side of the cart. He had hit his head on the floor and his legs were tangled in the cart cover. Not sure how he did it. He didn't cry right way as we think he was scared and in some sort of shock, but when he did start crying it was the most horrible cry I had ever heard him make.We did take him to the ER just to be sure nothing was really wrong and thankfully he was fine. He is 2 1/2 now and I make sure to never turn my back on the cart.

I have three children and I have been so lucky! My worst moment was when my first was born; she got an APGAR of 1. She had inhaled meconium and was infected with Group B Strep. They took her right out of the room and rushed her to the NICU, I thought she was dead and they just didn't want to tell me yet. I was so upset and wanted to hold my baby so much! A stupid nurse chided me for making too much noise crying and told me I was going to scare the other moms who were in labor, what a jerk! My daughter was in the NICU for 8 days, she had to have supplemental oxygen but was never intubated (yeah!) and she was on two kinds of IV antibiotics. (And oh by the way, my husband was laid off while she was in the NICU, just to make things worse!) She is now a perfectly healthy almost 9 year old! Once that nightmare was over, my husband and I knew we could get through anything as a couple and as parents, and we have been very fortunate with our children's health ever since! We have had a couple of scary moments when O. child decides to wander off in public (like when my 3 year old ran off in the mall and we finally found her in the play area) but other than that, blessedly uneventful!

I have 2.
When O. of my older kids were 2, O. of my girls decided to follow daddy--up to the roof. We were all in the yard and my husband decided that he would go up and clean out the gutters. We had been in the building for about 6 months, maybe a little more. We have a 2 flat with flat roof so no biggie (as long as it is him and not me). Anyway, I was standing by the garage with my kids and then I realized O. girl was missing. I thought she went to the front. So I went to find her, nope, not there. I tried to go inside. She locked the screen door! This girl is very smart. Well she followed daddy up to the second floor, out the window that leads to a bit of a balcony and then up the ladder. I was yelling to him on the roof that she locked me out at the same time he was hearing her say "Hi Daddy". He was looking down and then turned around and saw the top of her head at the top of the ladder. I still lose my heart each time I think about what could have happened.

The othr time, I had taken the kids to the zoo. I think they were 4 or 5. There were a lot of school and day camp kids there that day. We were watching the chipmunks playing and then I pulled the kids over. With 3 kids and O. parent, you gotta make it a rule they hold hands. O. of my girls decided to keep watching while we moved off to the side. I turned around and she was gone. Talk about drawing a blank on what to do. Then I remembered my cell phone and called the number on the map of the zoo that we normally don't bother to take. It turned out some very nice girls found her by herself and took her to the security office which was not far from where we were. My daughter was more scared that I was upset than she was of being lost. I know how it could have turned out and am so thankful for those 2 girls--maybe late teens early 20s at the oldest.

A couple come to mind. When my daughter was 11 months old, her sitter took off with her. I went to pick her up after work and her husband was there and he was like "She left me and I don't know where the hell your kid is" and tried to close the door. I told him that if he didn't find her in the next two minutes, the sheriff, FBI, CIA and anyone else I could think of would be at his front door!!! Especially with the odor coming from inside!! Apparently, the wife left her husband and didn't tell me! I was frantic trying to find my child. The wife showed up before the police and she had the nerve to ask if I wanted her to watch my daughter the next day! I don't think so!!! I took the next day off and found a wonderful daycare center for her in our neighborhood which lead to the next scariest thing. When baby girl was 19 months old her had that bacteria eating disease in her knee joint! She had been playing in her bed that morning and everything seemed fine. I got a call from the daycare that afternoon saying her knee was swollen and she wouldn't walk. Knowing that you can't watch a active kid all the time, I figured she had fallen. Her pedi told me that it was very serious and needed to go to Texas Childrens immediately! They did emergency surgery on her that night and told us that 1. she would have a drain in her knee for a while, 2. a new knee joint or 3. she would loose the leg above the knee!!! Luckily, she had the drain in the knee for several weeks, intervanous drugs for 2 months. So yeah, I look much older than I am!!! haha!!!

With my oldest it was when he was 3 and at his very first swim class. The instructor was across the pool with another child and had left the 3 y/o's hanging onto the edge. My little guys fingers slipped and he silently slid down. Luckily, I was standing right by the edge talking with another mom and saw it out of the corner of my eye. He was staring up at me with big, huge, scared eyes. I dove in after him.
My youngest's scariest moment was when he was 2 and we had arrived home and I went into the house to use the bathroom and hubby and older son went out to feed the chickens. My little guy wanted to go with Dad. I thought Dad knew and Dad thought he was with me. I had a weird feeling adn went out to check on them. Dad hadn't seen him. We panicked. We live on 9 acres bordering state land (very wooded and very large). I headed down the driveway (100 yards from the road) and about 1/2 way down I saw 3 cars stopped on the road ~ my heart sank. Then I see a man carrying my son walking toward me. Once I could focus I realized it just happened to be the guy who built our house!! He said "R" hadn't gone into the street, but was standing at the very end of our driveway. Alone. When he pulled up 2 cars had already stopped.

The scariest MOMENT happened at the pool on vacation. My usually obedient 3 yo was staying in the shallow kid pool within the larger pool. I got out of the pool for a second to grab something, leaving both my kids near a friend. When i turned back I saw him underwater in the deep end. My friend fished him out a second before I got there. Luckily he'd only been under a few moments and was totally fine- started crying right away- but I had a heartattack! Learned my lesson.
But the real scariest was when we went to China and he was a toddler. He got SO sick he was actually listless. SO scary! And the worst part was trying to negotiate a foriegn ER without speaking a word of Chinese or understanding anything the doctors said.

Hi Denise-

When I was 23 or so weeks pregnant with my twins...the docs recommended amnio to"'see if the twin with the cardiac defect was compatible with life...and when to intervene for the benefit of the 'good' twin"...YITE! They were in separate amniotic sacs, so they injected blue dye in the healthy twin's sac...and did the amnios...When I got home, I thought I had wet my pants...and when I checked, it was blue...**sigh** I called the doc...he said bed rest...(ha!! 5 under 6...) Anyway, all seemed well for a few days...and had to go for another fetal echo cardiogram...results were back...no chromosome issues/syndromes. They 're ruptured' me on the table...sending me into labor...and hospital bedrest. They were able to stop contractions...and the other good news was there was time for betamethazone (sp?) for their lungs...but, after almost 3 weeks in hospital...fever...more contractions...at 29 weeks and 3 days (not that I was counting) emergency c section and delivery.

LONG story short...and almost 15 years later, Megan is absolutely fine...Shannon is as well...some developmental delays...but a 'forever' 5 year old!! A delightful age IMO...

In the end, I am glad that *I* did not have to 'pick' between the twins...in hindsight...God made that decision!!

Best Luck!

Scariest:
My then baby was in my travel system in the driveway. I parked the stroller at the garage door, went inside the garage to open the other garage door. Before I got half way there I heard a noise, turned and saw the stroller rolling down the driveway to the boulder ditch. I ran as fast as I could and grabbed the stroller as it got to within 6 inches of the ditch! I stopped it, pulled it sideways, and then collapsed in tears in the yard. My 2 neighbors, O. of which is my sitter came running.

2nd scariest: I was in the Target parking lot, with my then baby in her infant carrier propped in the front/top of the cart. I had set the cart next to my car and was getting stuff out of the cart and putting in the trunk. I turned back to get the next thing and the cart was gone! It was rolling down the aisle with my baby in it and a car coming!! The car luckily stopped and I was able to get to her before she hit anything.

Both were within the same month.

I have two....

July 9, 2002 - the day Nicholas was born...his first APGAR score was a 2. He was purple and not breathing....it took them working on him for a few minutes (felt like hours) and they whisked him away....only when I went to visit him in the NICU later - he stopped breathing in front of my - flat lined....and the nurses shoved me out of the NICU and locked the door - my husband was home with Greg - age 2 and no O. to take care of him...so I was there alone...Drs said 50/50 chance...and would be in the NICU AT LEAST 4 weeks...he had pneumonia and underdeveloped lungs....we called Pastor the next day and they started a prayer chain...he was breathing on his own in 48 hours and out of the NICU in 7 days....Nicky's had Guardian Angels since that day...

Fast forward 5 years...I just jumped off the diving board getting out of the pool, turning to look at Nicky - he fell through the bars and landed head first on the concrete slab....NOTHING was wrong with him - after the paramedics and the doctors checked him and asked "are you SURE he fell HEAD FIRST off the diving board?" YES!!! The pool manager was distraught as I was....again - his Guardian Angels looking after him...let's not count the 4 yes FOUR times he was walked IN FRONT of cars on a street and they have missed him by THAT much....I just thank his Angels every day....

Its a long story but to summarize, when my youngest daughter was 18 months old (just this last January actually) she ran a fever of 108. Went to the ER where she had to immediately have IVs and a then a spinal tap (suspected meningitis...thankfully that test was negative). She was admitted with sepsis (blood infection), the flu, had to have surgery to drain an infection that settled in her elbow joint, had a PIC line (basically a catheter in her vein used in lieu of an IV in her hand) surgically inserted in her vein, was going to be allowed to go home after seven days in isolation but the stinker yanked the PIC line out of her arm and we had to stay another 5 days. When we were finally discharged, we barely made it home as it was the worst ice storm we've had in years and the streets were all iced over. THEN that night, through some misinformation on their part, my auto lender towed my vehicle. THEN that Friday my husband got laid off. Yea, that was a bad month for us.

But as it turns out, my baby is 99% better (other than a mean looking scar on her elbow), we got my vehicle back (plus O. month credited off my payments), my husband has a better than ever job, I got a great job too and we are doing better than we have been in a long time.

I have come to believe that sometimes you are forced to weather the storm to see the light.

She was going home with hubby, but somehow escaped hiim and headed into the busy street. I couldn't move fast enough, being "trapped" in my car, but I could see everything. I could see him looking frantically, her heading out into the street, I'm screaming, but no O. can hear me. And I can't move, and couldn't have crossed the street to get to her if I tried. Somehow, she stopped in the parking lane and just stood there until daddy came and rescued her. We were up all night shaking.

I've had a couple. A 'former' friend of mine was moving and needed some extra hands to help pack etc. She insisted that her13yr old daughter was very responsible in helping to look out for our 3 year old. We were in and out of the house, packing, and loading boxes when I noticed that her daughter came inside from being out front. (she had an enclosed front yard). I didn't notice my son with her. After I asked her where he was, I immediately ran outside calling for him. It was dark too. I frantically called for him and ran around the area looking for him. I found him sitting by the motor home they had playing in the grass area. I was so relieved!!! Just moments after I got him and was hugging on him, a Coyote came trotting across the area. That was scary because my little guy could have been a snack for that coyote! Never again have I let him out of my sight. Since then, I had another little boy. About six months ago (1 1/2 years old), he was playing with his toys in the living room. He started choking!!! I ran to him patting him on the back and opened his mouth and did a finger sweep and found that he had stuck O. of those plastic rings from the milk jug in his mouth. (the cat was playing with that). I am very careful not to lose those anymore and they always go in the trash. I have found as a mother, that you can never be too careful. :-D Close calls have come my way and thank God nothing serious came of them. It has made me much more aware of everything around me.

Oh, and I will never allow a friend to put my child in their carseat ever again. I had a friend whom I was going shopping with and we road in her car and she said I can use the carseat that was in her car. She said she put it in there for me. I put my son in there, buckled him up, (he was 2 1/2) and as we were on the freeway going on the off ramp making a turn, the carseat tipped over on its side!!! I immediately made her pull over to the side of the road. She didn't put it in there right and it was my fault for not double checking it. Since she had two kids of her own, I trusted her. Never again do I allow my kids to use anyone elses carseats in anyone elses vehicle. Not that it was my friends fault completely, but it sure made me paranoid and my kids will never ride in anyone elses car using someone esles carseat. That was really scary for me. My friend felt so bad. It just goes to show that we must always be cautious, even if it sounds or appears silly to others or even yourself. :-)

What was your scariest Mom Moment????

When my son was about 2, he disappeared from the house while I was in the next room and didn't hear him. I went out the door to see a man with an 18 wheeler waving his arms at me from the next cul de sac. My son had gotten in his little toy car and gone over to take a look at the truck. I was so scared to see how small he was compared with those wheels.
After that, we got a doorknob cover for the front door. It worked for awhile. Then O. day I got out of the shower to find the doorknob cover busted off and the front door open. A neighbor helped me look, and we found O. of my son's books at the end of the street. We finally found him another block away.
Heart surgery when he was 4 was also scary.

When my daughter was 2, I was holding my 3 day old baby, and heard a moan/growl sound come from her monitor. We ran upstairs to find her in a full fledged seizure. Afterwards she was glassy eyed, and very still for 10 minutes. I didn't call 911 (I'm in the medical field, felt somewhat confident). I laid on her floor for several hours after that to listen and be there for her. Turns out it was a febrile seizure due to a spike in a fever.

My daughter was 2 and we took her to the waterfront to feed the ducks. The dock that we were on was enclosed but open just enough for her to lean through. She asked me for more bread and when I turned to my husband to get it and turned back around she was gone. She fell through and into the river. We could not find her and when my husband climbed over the railing had seen that she went under the dock. There was so much pipes and wire under there that he could not get to her. There was a man that was fishing and he dove in to help. He swam under all the pipes and handed her to my husband. I was freaking out at this time cause I could not see her. Thank God my husband had started to teach her how to swim and she was treading water. Just enough to keep her head above the water. When the man handed her to my husband she looked at him and said thank you. He started crying, I was crying and my husband was shaking. We couldn't thank him enough. I went over and gave him a hugh hug and thanked him a hundred more times. He calls her his little angel. We go down there as much as we can. He is retired and is down there fishing all the time. We make sure to find him so that he can see her. He was our guardian angel that day and always will be. My daughter loves Mustangs. She has the power wheels car and everytime that we see O. she says "just like my mustang" So he has a classic mustang and took us for a ride in it. She was so excited that she got to ride in a real mustang. He is the sweetest man and will always be in our hearts. Thank God he was there that day.
My other scary mom moment was just last week. My father had a stroke last sunday. We were at the hospital visiting him and she said that she was hungry. So we went down to the cafeteria to get her something to eat. As I was getting our food I turned around and she was gone. I ran up and down the hallway calling her name. I asked O. of the ladies in the kitchen if she saw her. Another woman said that she saw her getting on the elevator by herself and took her to security. I was freaking out again. As I walked to the main desk there she stood with a nurse. My daughter looked at me and said " I was trying to find poppy" Mind you she is only 3 1/2. I told her not to ever do that again. That someone could take her away from mommy and daddy. So now if we go to the cafeteria she stands right next to me and holds my hand. I think she learned her lesson. So in the last year and a half I think I had 2 heartattacks.

My son is only 15 months old, but my scariest thus far was when he spiked a fever of 105. His skin was literally burning to the touch and he was acting hysterical. Obviously a trip to the ER! :/

seeing my 2 year old do the "dead man" float in the pool during swim lessons with no adult near him. I wasn't able to get the instructors attention quickly enough so I jumped in the pool with my clothes on to get him. He was fine and pointed at the water and said, "Uh-Oh!" when I got him out......definitely took time off my life though!

Last night, my husband and i were watching tv in the bedroom. i asked him to leave the door open so i could keep an eye on the toddler. but no, he wanted the door closed. about 5 minutes later, we hear a crash. i ran out into the living room to find the door open and our daughter gone. we werent so concerned because she gets out alot.... but when we went outside we couldnt find her anywhere! she wasnt at the neighbors, or at the playground for our apartments..we ran around for 10 minutes freaking out trying to find her. i was thinking she had been kidnapped or something and was about to just die. our neighbor found her hiding behind the apartment building next to ours. OMG my heart. still not recovered but i am so thank ful. i am making sure the doors are locked at ALL times from now on.

very good question. I was pumping gas O. day and my husband's car autolocks, i had forgotten it does that, since i hardly use it, i was pumping and then i heard the lock, i pat my pockets to make sure the keys are in my pockets and sure enough they're not with me, the keys were inside, my cell phone was inside, my son WAS INSIDE, windows up and all. I was freakin'g out, crying, scared, i didn't want him to see me because he was going to start crying. I ran inside to call my husband and he didn't answer. He works at nights and sleeps during the day and this was during the day, i kept calling until i got a hold of him, he called triple A for me and he headed over to me and he got there before triple A did. My son was fine, I had turned on the dvd for him so he was watching his fav cartoon and didn't even turn to look at me once. My husband took us to eat to make sure my sugar went back to normal and i calmed down before we headed home. Now i double check i have the keys with me at all times. so scary , oh and it was in the summer too! :/
