Scabies....ugh!

I am so upset..I just took my daghter to the doctor because of a rash that I wasn't able to get rid of and was told she had scabies. I'm assuming maybe she picked it up from day care but I'm not sure. No one else in the house is showing any symptoms and hopefully we won't.
Anyway, I went to get her prescription filled and it's $80 which I can't afford. Are there any over the counter medicines to cure this?

What can I do next?

Sometimes if you tell the doctor you're on a tight budget, they'll try to get you an alternative brand that is a more reasonable price. So you should ask.

No there are no over the counter meds for this. It will NOT go away until you use the prescribed ointment.

Scabies are transmitted by skin to skin contact, bedding, furniture. Daycare needs to know about this, it is hard to get but it can be transferred in one touch. EVERYTHING in your house that she has touched in the last 72 hours needs to be cleaned thoroughly!

Our daughter (6 months old at the time) got it when we visited my A. who had been in the hospital ( w/cancer). My A. didn't know until we contacted anyone who had been around our daughter to let them know they needed to get themselves looked at if they have a rash that will not go away.

Also note, that once she has had them, she will be more susceptible to getting it again. I personally treated the whole family and not just my daughter. However by the time she was diagnosed we all were starting with the symptoms (we saw six doctors in 8 weeks).

When my husband was sick, I went to the pharmacy and they told me his medicine was $80. I went straight out to the parking lot and called 3 other pharmacies to ask prices. Wal-mart had it for $26. I took the script to them, had it filled, and there was also a code the pharmacist called in to get an extra 10% off. I'm not sure what the medication is that your daughter needs, but is there a generic? You could ask the doctor if there's something else to treat too. Hope this helps, and your daughter feels better soon.

there are different types of scabies. Therefore if you don't know which ones, then home remedies are not effective. Scabies are hard to get, but once you get them they stay dug in for a long time and its very hard to get rid of them naturally. Scabies can be picked up from infected furniture, bedding, people, and dirty home environments. No telling where she got them from, they are also sexually transmitted. So if you ruled that out, its time to figure out where they came from. If its from the day care, it has to be reported and taken care of NOW, They are a mite. They burrow INTO the skin. The only effective home remedy in helping control the spread, but let me strongly add it does not CURE them, is tea tree oil. Best you find some money and get her the prescription. These scabies will likely infect you and whoever else is in the household if you do not contain and treat them now.

Cool Luna!!! I didnt know there were different prices for the treatments. I know my neighbors just paid 80 bucks for the stuff..wish I thought about that to help them :(

I would defiently call other pharmacys!!! I don't even remember what we did back when I was little and had them. They where so annoying. We got them from school. More than likly she got it from daycare. She probably was on the same blancket of another kid that had it. It's basicly like lice just under your skin. Let the daycare know because they will need to check the other kids there so when she's better she doesn't get it back from the other kids that have not been treated!!! If you can't find it cheeper you might do like the one mom said and get tea tree oil. I know that works on lice. To make it go further you can probalby put it with cooking oil. That what I did when my boys got lice. It smothers them.

Good luck and God Bless!!!

Call your doctors office and explain you cannot afford the meds. they may have samples they can give you or assist with getting the meds at a lower cost. A good doctor / doctors offices will assist with this problem.

The school nurse sent my granddaughter home with scabies the other day and said she couldn't come back until she had a doc's note.

The nurse practitioner the kids see was so confused. She looked at my granddaughters hands and said there is no way it is scabies, they infest the hands and that is how they spread from spot to spot. The only way. So I called the nurse from school and asked if we were missing something and she said no, since the rash wasn't going away she figured it must be scabies.

The nurse practitioner looked all over my granddaughter's body and she only had the rash where he shirt covered. Through deduction we decided she is allergic to my new Gain Fabric Softener. I stopped using it and have eventually washed everything over without it. She did get one top the other day and sure enough, the rash came back.

I am so glad it wasn't scabies, I felt that fear for a couple of hours until we could get in to see the nurse practitioner. I trust her so much and am glad we have her. I have never really cared for the school nurse, although I know she has had a long fulfilling career outside of the school system.

I researched scabies a great deal while waiting for the appointment. Be careful with the creme if you have pets, it is fatal to cats. They can just lick it off her skin and can die. I would also watch carefully to see if there are any side effects. I don't know the full list but goodness, isn't it a pesticide much like lice shampoo?

I would ask the pharmacist if there is any other way of treating this. They may know of something otc that has the same ingredients in them.

I work in technical sales for a national testing laboratory and coincidentally I called on a dermatologist yesterday and we got kind of side tracked and ended up talking about scabies. I also have a background in veterinary medicine so this interests me.

Was your daughter prescribed Permethrin (as a 5% cream for head to toe treatment)? This is used multiple times to catch the little mites in the different stages of their life cycle. I read they sell a 1% version OTC for lice but this won't be strong enough for mites.

The other moms had great advice to call around and price it at other pharmacies. Be careful, they spread in close contact. Good luck!

If you have AAA, they help cover prescription costs if you don't have covereage through health insurance. It won't be free, but it may very well be considerably cheaper.

When I was a teenager I was told I had this and nearly went crazy thinking I had some mite/bug in me but it wasn't that at all but was allergy rash from being allergic to dust, etc. I got dust shots weekly and it went away. You should get a second opinion as it's hard to diagnose.

You could also check with Franklin County Board of Health. They have a free clinic on Mondays, but keep in mind that you need to be prepared to spend several hours there. And, be there waiting before the "start time". I wouldn't mention that you already have seen a doctor about it, but they will prescribe and have filled any medication they determine is appropriate. There are other days and locations around the area, you can print a guide from the FCBoH website as well.

I was told my son had scabies a few months back. Same thing a rash we couldn't get rid of. Nobody in the family got it. I bought the stupid 80 dollar cream and it did nothing! Turns out it was really bad excema. The other doctor I seem said it is so contagious that if it was scabies the rest of the fam would have it. So needless to say I have a full damn bottle of 80.00 cream! To bad we are not closer you could have mine. Maybe get a second doc to look at her just incase!
