Saving Solid Foods.....

Does anyone know if it is safe to save solid food from which the baby has eaten? I make my son's food, and today, for example he didn't finish his lunch (fresh salmon, yellow squash tomato juice and grains)...I fed him from the bowl and hate to throw the rest of it away. Is it safe to keep in the refrigerator and give to him in another 3 hours or so?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone, for the responses! This is so wonderful! Well, it ended up that my son ate all of his lunch (his daddy took over feeding him when I went online to post this question--haha!), but this advice will definitely come in handy. Thanks again, so much!

I would think it is fine as long as you refridgerate it right after he is done eating. We eat leftovers all the time. I wouldn't waste food especially if its to be eaten again in the same day.

Hi B., if it's only 3 hours or so should be ok in the fridge.

You mean it's a concern since the spoon went from his mouth to the bowl and back again? If so, yeah, I wouldn't use it a week from now!

:)

I agree with Sarah K. When we first give kids solid foods, we hear that we need to throw out whatever they don't eat. I think that's really because they are still so little and we don't want to expose them to too much bacteria. As they get older, their immune systems are much more mature and they can handle it.

Kids can be so inconsistent with how much that eat at meals. We often put too much on their plates, but they're often hungry an hour or too later so I usually save their plates and give them to them then.

Serve it in a separate bowl. Saliva starts to break the food down; which causes the food to rot faster.

I was always told not to reuse food that came in contact with your childs saliva. It causes bacteria to grow. I think the safest thing to do is give him a portion in a different bowl, and add to it when he wants more. My daughter is 8months, and I scoop out half a jar, and save the rest for later or the next day. I also think you could keep it out for an hour tops. This is also the reason they tell you to dump babies bottle if they haven't finished it in an hour.

We did it all the time and just put it back right after she was done. Just be more careful with fish. Or... we ate it ourselves as leftover snacks. We make her food that we would eat, so it wasn't weird. Just leftovers. I would just only do it about twice tops. Our daughter is 2 now.

I would. I also reuse breastmilk from a bottle that wasn't finished and have never had a problem. Now that they're a little bigger, I don't take special precautions (sterilizing and so forth) ... I mean, they play, crawl, etc. on the floor; their bodies are designed to deal with a little bacteria. Plus, we save leftovers all the time and we're always fine.

I'd be cautious...I do save things often with a second guessing thought in my mind...LOL. I do however absolutely not save something IF I thought there was any chance he was already not feeling well. My own misguided comfort I suppose. I guess overall I probably save things for short periods more than I don't and I definitly put cups in the fridge that have already been used..ie: Milk at night...my mom would STRONGLY disagree with me though - hahahah!

If you only heated it once, I say it's fine...I've done it. If you heated it twice, I would say maybe but use your discretion. Anymore than twice (re-heated) I would throw away...just to be safe.

Yes, just like you would save food you didn't finish in the frig and eat it again.
