Sanitizing Play Pens

I'm due to have my second child in under a month and we've kept our graco play pen over at my in-laws for when my daughter Nattalie would take naps there and then recently this past year we had a new nephew and every time he's been in it he's been sick. I would like to take the whole thing outside and wash it like a car, but I know I can't do that. Is there a way I can sanitize it before the newborn will use it? It also has the basinet part that sits up high in it that the baby will be sleeping in. My husband says that the bed part is vinyl. I don't know what to do about the screen part and the railing parts of the crib.

What can I do next?

I use the Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface spray. I'm sure that would work to clean the bottom and the top of the rails. I use it on my dd's highchair. I just spray it on, let it sit for a minute or two, then wipe it off. She eats food straight off the highchair and it doesn't bother her or anything. It does smell like bleach, but only when it's wet. I wouldn't wash it outside. I think that there are probably metal parts and you don't want them to rust. Congrats on the baby!

From what I understand, germs don't last more than a few days on surfaces. The baby won't catch an illness from the bed.

Personally, I'd just swab it down with a soapy sponge and skip any chemicals, which can't be good for a baby. You definitely don't want to spray it with a hose - the particle board in the base would warp. It might be interesting to call the Graco (or whoever the mfg. is) 800 number and see what they say, though.

The best thing to use that kills everything is a product called Pursue disinfectant. Want to know how to get it just message me. It is inexpensive and kills almost anything imaginable and is safe around children and pets.

Actually, you might be surprised by washing it outside. I have hosed down many baby things and as long as they have a chance to dry, they are all right. For things like the pack and play, crib and changing table, I just scrubbed them down with a washcloth wet with dishwashing detergent. If I'm really paranoid, I'll spray it with Lysol before wiping it down.
