My daughter is African American and I am finally breaking down and saying that we need her hair styled...it pains me as her 3rd birthday is in January and she is yet to have a haircut:(

With that said, I don't know where to take her. Because she has really curly hair, I can't take her just "anywhere"...and since I'm not AA, I'm not sure where I should take her. Can anyone give me ideas? I live in Kyle

What can I do next?

My advice as hairstylist is look 4 a salon or hairstylist that only does aa hair cuz they know how 2 deal with her hair the best and can recommend different thangs to you.I do not know a salon in your area though wish i could help you more.Look up on the yellow pages online alot of times clients will leave little thangs bout the salon to help you out!! good luck!!

V.,
I live in Austin and I have a friend that has two precious AA daughters. They are out of town this weekend for the long holiday. I have left her a message to call me. She is also on Mom's Source. Either she or I will post a suggestion this week. She may also have idea's on hair care products. She was very careful about what she put on the girls hair, since many of the products for AA hair have strong chemicals or hormones. Will be in touch.

Blessings,
Connie

Hi V.,
Thanks to Constance for forwarding this to me! I well know your dilemma. I have two beautiful African American daughters myself, ages 11 and 15. It has been an interesting journey for me, especially since I have straight, caucasion hair. I've had many hairstylists for many years give me advice and recommendations. I would suggest you take your daughter to "Your Best Image" on Manchaca Road in South Austin. Greg Day is the owner and he is all about "natural" care for AA hair. He has been my primary educator regarding hair care for my daughters. They both have "SISTER LOCKS" which is a patented crocheted locking system. It's expensive, but the option we felt best suited our active family life. At the very least Greg can give your daughter a trim and get you on your way with the best products, without the chemicals. I would strongly encourage you to become educated regarding the chemical processing for ethnic hair. In my opinion, my daughters have never been more beautiful since Greg started doing their hair. Good luck.
Blessings,
G. Treuter

Being that your daughter is only three I doubt that she needs her hair cut. It is very unusual to cut a AA childs hair. She probally just needs her hair braided or just styled with black hair care products. Unfortunatly there isn't many places to go. There is one in sanMarcos on LBJ across from the showplace movie theater. otherwise your best bet would be to seek help from an African American. We love to do hair and MOST ARE MORE THAN WILLING TO LEND A HAND OR ADVICE.
