Rule of Thumb on When to Lower the Crib

Ladies-

What's the rule of thumb on when to lower the crib to the lower setting? Our son is now 6 months old. He moves around quite a lot in his sleep. If he's right up against the bars, he can reach his toes and his fingertips to the top rail. He's an army crawler, and he's a toppling tripod sitter.

He hasn't shown any inclination to hoist himself up, as yet. I don't, however want him to try, the one day my back is turned.

Flip side is, I only stand 5'1" so if we lower the crib to the lower setting, it will be hard for me to get him in and out. Esp now with these modern, stationary sided cribs.

Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your helpful suggestions. We will be lowering the mattress tonight. Better safe than sorry on this one. Thanks to all of you for recommending a stepstool. I'll be sure to give that a go.

I would say when he starts pulling himself up on the rails. You probably dont have much more time. ;)

I would say now - why wait? Better safe than sorry. You have to get used to it being lowered anyway! Get a step stool if you must.

Good luck!

I lower ours as soon as they start rolling over... Cause I don't want their ability to pull up sneak up on me and catch me unawares... :-) Perhaps you could figure out some way to make a trundle type of thing that fits under the crib when put away, but you can pull out and use as a step... Sorta like an upside down drawer so you can flip it and fill it when not needing it as a step (as in next baby, pre lowering matress stage)

If he can put his foot on the top rail, I say now is the time.

I'd lower it one notch. I'm short, too, and I got used to the lower crib without a stool.

We lowered ours the first time at 6 months, then again the other day at 8 months. Our LO is walking already and would prefer to be out of the crib as soon as the first eye opens. :) I would lower it and get a step stool that you will be able to use at a later date.

I was always told that when standing, if baby's armpits can reach the bar then you need to lower it. (Or if there is a bumper that they can stand on to reach that high...) I guess it's their center of gravity, so if the bar is higher than their armpits they have to actually climb up and over, but it if's even or lower, then they could lean over to far and fall out.

My SIL is a midget. (Lol. Seriously, she is.) She has a 'normal' sized son, who sleeps in a normal crib. She just bought a VERY wide, sturdy stepladder she could climb.

as soon as they can raise their bodies with their arms.

I agree, I had to have a stool.
