Rugs- High Pile Vs. Low Pile

I'm thinking of getting a rug to designate a reading spot in the family room. My boys are 7, 5, and 5 so it would be...well worn:) I have zero experience with rugs. High pile rugs seem much more comfy, but do they get matted easily? Can I just vacuum the oomph back into them or do they just get matted over time?

What's been your experience with rugs?

What can I do next?

I would go with a low pile because they may want snacks to go with the books and the crumbs will sink into the high pile. Also look at remnants, in a coordinating color, they can be finished so they don't unravel. Or check out the area rugs at Family Dollar, 5' x 7' area rug for $22. Nothing fancy but should hold up for the kids.

We just got one of those really piled up fluffy rugs for our family room last year. I was really afraid of how to take care of it, since it was so fluffy and I didn't want my vacuum cleaner to eat it up, if you know what I mean. Anyway, no problems. I put my vacuum on the highest level, and vacuum away. It does not really get matted down either. When I vacuum it there are vacuum marks on it, but when they are gone it does not look matted down. It is very comfy and we get lots of compliments on it. The kids love to lay on it to watch tv. I think it is a 10 x 10 rug or close to that and I think we paid around $600-$700 for it, if that helps too. I like it so much if I needed another one I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

I suggest that the difference in comfort between a high pile and a low pile is negligible and the low pile will be easier to keep clean. I agree with Ina G. Add some bean bags or even just lots of pillows to add the softness. I'd use pillows. You can get really inexpensive ones and you can wash the pillow cases.

It's so fluffy I'm gonna die!!!!!

LOL... I love fluffy.

If its smallish, and wraps around your vacuum...

- Take it outside and beat it
- Roll it upside down and vacuum upside down
- Use the wand only

If largest (and wraps around vacuum), roll it upside down.

Of course, most DONT wrap around vacuum.
______

To wash... In summer... Take outside & hose off + shampoo + scrubbrush + air dry + fluffify

I would go with a low pile or woven rug - they are easier to clean. We have a very nice woven rug that can even go in the wash - LOVE that. Add some bean bags or even just pillows for comfort.
Good luck!

I think rugs wear better for kids if a low pile. High pile, depending on how high, get toys 'lost' in them more, mash down, are harder to vacuum. They are great for less played on areas. I have a rug with a pattern and it's deeper in area than other places and the grandchildren pull pieces out of it playing on it. It's not a cheap rug either. If they are only reading it might be okay but I vote for low pile but a good grade of carpet.

Whatever is the softest! My boys absolutely love super soft stuff, so the softer the rug, the easier it would be to get them to sit on it and stay on it.
