can anyone advise on Rotavirus, my 2 kids have it right now....we are about day 5 into this....I know it will end soon but I'd love to hear from others, advice, how to keep it from reinfecting....this has been rough! I also do not want to get it from my kids. My daughter is 2.5 yrs old and my son is 7 mo. old. Neither one has become dehydrated, thankfully, but its a lengthy virus. Advice.....thanks, N.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks to all of you for the advice...i have been doing all that is advised....cleaning hands constantly me the kids, using rubber gloves sometimes. carefully disposing of the diapers, man the smell!
you are right it is distinct, Erica R.! It is a terrible smell!! and man does the diaper changing go on and on!
but now we are in day 5 of it and seems to be coming to a close. no more vomit, and not one Diarrhea diaper today! yeah!! so the 7 mo. old and my daugther are good, so far. I did not get it either or my husband.
but i agree this is a terrible bad virus and i heard from a nurse/friend that its everywhere right now, its the season for Rotavirus so to all KEEP cleanign the HANDS, now I will be more careful. and yes correction from one comment made....Rotavirus is only shed through stool (it is a GI bug, not respiratory) that can be picked up by contaminated objects or hands. If you check the CDC website, they will probably have the most accurate information.
This info came from my friend who is a nurse, good to know. take care all! and hopefully no one gets this virus...i'm glad that if we do get it again it will not be as bad though! -N.

there's much you can do, but make sure they are hydrated.
wash hand frequently. it is spread by droplets, and is airborne. cso cover there mouths if they sneeze or cough. it should pass soon. the first time a child gets it is usually the worst. most often occurs in infants - 3 years of age. good luck!

Rota is HORRIBLE! Anyone who has had kids who have had this virus will forever remember the smell of the diarrhea! Sorry, I know that is gross, but very true! I just wanted to respond because the other response you got mentioned some wrong details regarding Rota. It is NOT airborne. There is usually no coughing involved. The virus is found in the fecal matter and spread through contact. So the key is washing your and your kids hands thoroughly - OFTEN; especially after changing the many many diapers! It’s a good idea to put each diaper in a ziplock bag so there can't be any afterwards contamination upon disposal. The good news is that your kids have it at the same time; they will more than likely get past it at the same time instead of constantly infecting each other. Although it is possible to get Rota more than once, it will not be as sever the second and so forth time. It is unlikely that you will get it because you have been exposed to Rota many times throughout your life and the young strains your kids have you have already built an immune to. The main issue which will send a lot of kids with Rota to the hospital is dehydration; so if your kids remain hydrated, you will win the battle and all you can do is wait it out. Sounds like you are doing the right thing already! Good luck! :)

Do everything you can to make sure they stay hydrated. My son had it at 24 months and he couldn't even keep water down. We had to make 3 trips to the ER before they would take us seriously. The third time, I walked in with him limp in my arms and his eyes rolling back in his head from dehydration. Even then, they kept him for one night and as soon as we got home he was throwing up again. He threw up for 9 days straight. I could be wrong, but I don't think adults usually get it. The doctor said if we got it from him we would only be sick for a day or so. Good luck, and trust your instincts if something seems wrong, especially with the little guy! I have a 2 1/2 year old son and an 8 month old son if you are ever interested in getting together for playdates or anything.

i gave my daughter brown rice/ ricce water, they didnt like it but my god it helped! oatmeal, brown rice, bananas, anything naturally sticky. she ended up in the hospital for dehydration, before we knew what it even was. good luck. be careful.
