B.B.
We really liked Hitch, and one of my favorite movies is Fools Rush In. These are oldish but still really good.
My husband and I would like to watch a romantic comedy (or a "chick flick" as he calls it) on DVD this week. We haven't kept up with movies in awhile, though, and don't really know what's out there. We prefer PG, but PG-13 would be okay. We'd like a feel-good movie without much depth or darkness. Do any of you have recommendations?
Thank you all so much for the great suggestions!
We really liked Hitch, and one of my favorite movies is Fools Rush In. These are oldish but still really good.
"Something's Gotta Give" with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson
is very funny. It is a romantic comedy. We plan to watch it tonight, Valentines night.
I actually bought it since it is so hilarious. You can rent it also on DVD. Have fun!

Hi S.,
You have to rent "The Notebook"(James Garner) it's the best romantic movie,my husband and I both loved that one."Sweet Home Alabama"(Reese Whiterspoon), "The Holiday"(Cameron Diaz),and "Hitch"(Will Smith) were good too! We haven't seen "Atonement" yet but I hear it's suppose to be good!
Enjoy!
A.
Though a great movie, the "Notebook" will make you cry, so I don't recommend it.
"A Room with a View" is a beautiful movie and sweet story. It's about coming of age and finding true love. The romance of Florence Italy is wonderful.
"Enchanted April" is a great movie too, and in some ways I like it better because it's about four women/friends, that vacation to Italy and explore their feelings and relationships with their hubbys back home. My explanation doesn't do it credit.
Neither of the movies are action packed but are great, engaging stories, and you probably haven't seen them. Whereas "Sleepless in Seattle" or "You've Got Mail" are probably movies you have seen, but they are both great too.
If you want an old movie, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in "An Affair to Remember" is wonderful... it's the movie they talk about often in "Sleepless in Seattle", which the movie is really based upon.
Another good one that you've probably seen is "While you were sleeping".
Must Love Dogs. Cute romantic comedy with Diane Lane and John Cusack. Of course, you can always go with a classic - Love Actually. If you haven't seen it, it's definitely worth it. Great cast of Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Kiera Knightly.
I have just two words for you... "Love Actually".
it's funny, it's warm. its a good combination of mushy love stuff with general human nature.
It's a couple of years old...but I highly recommend.
Warm wishes to you.
Knocked Up is a great movie. It is a romantic comedy that both you guys will like.
If you haven't seen it.... Love Actually...SUCH a great movie!
Definately The Notebook with James Garner!!!
"The Holiday" is a really cute "chick flick" with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Jude Law. It is rated PG-13 and is definitely a light, feel-good movie.
Here are a few:
The Holiday (PG-13) Good story. Has Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black...Two romantic story lines. Nothing crude. A little bid of cursing and implied sexual content (but no actual content).
No Reservations (PG I believe). Very cute. Catherine Zeta Jones, Aaron Eckhart, and Abigail Breslin (little girl from Little Miss Sunshine).
Return to Me (PG). GREAT Movie! Minnie Driver and David Duchovny, Bonnie Hunt and Carrol O'Conner. Such a cute story and great soundtrack too.
The Notebook is GREAT! I warn you that it has a pretty vivid sex scene AND it is extremely emotional. My husband and I watched it together and I was a sobbing mess. It is a wonderful wonderful love story though.
My absolute favorite is The Wedding Planner.
The Notebook is the best all time romantic movie.
No Reservations with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart. It just came out on DVD yesterday (Tuesday) and it is rated PG. My husband and I went to see it in the theater and we loved it! It would be perfect.
when a man loves a woman and notebook
The Notebook is a wonderful movie.
Love Actually is great or The Notebook..sooo good!
I would second French Kiss. It is an awesome romantic movie with a lot of laughs!
I recently saw P.S. I Love You at the theater. Although it had tear jerker moments, I loved the movie and it made me realize that I need to appreciate my husband more. It also made me wish that my husband was as romantic as the guy in the movie so maybe I need to take him to see it.
Hey, sounds like fun! I'm a big movie buff and I just saw one of the best movies in a while -it's The Jane Austen Book Club. It was really good and all about romance. I'm going to buy it if I don't get it for Valentine's Day. :) Have fun! 13 going on 30 is one of my favorite's too. S
"Fools Rush In" With Selma Hayek and Matthew Perry. Not a recent one, but totally fits the bill. Your husband might even like it as much as mine does :-)
If you and your husband like Adam Sandler, I would
recommend The Wedding Singer or 50 First Dates.
I LOVE "The Holiday", I could watch it over & over....maybe because Jude Law is so HOT in this movie!
I recently rented "In the Land of Women" w/ Meg Ryan & Adam Brody. I really liked it, there are a few sad moments but not an overall dark movie.
My husband and I went to see No Reservations with Catherine Zeta Jones while it was playing in the theaters. He commented several times afterward how he liked the movie and it wasn't too girly. It's now out on DVD. I'm planning on getting a copy for Valentine's Day since we'll celebrate at home.
If you wanted to GO and see a movie then P.S. I Love You was very good. But, my all time favorite romantic comedy is "Return To Me" with Minnie Driver and David Duchovny(sp). At first I wasn't very interested because I didn't think they would have very good chemistry. But they proved me wrong. I loved this film.
Wendy hit several on my top list so any of hers would be great.
Both me and my husband's favorite movie that we continuosly watch to this day is Joe vs. the Volcano with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. It's an oldie and wonderful goodie.
Try the movie No Reservations with Catherine Zeta-Jones, it's good, and very clean.
My Husband and I just watched Holiday with Cameran Diaz and Kate Winslet! I thought it was hilarious. My husband said he enjoyed it but it probably wouldn't be something he'd watch again. I think I could watch it many times over. I'm not sure of the rating but it was not bad if for some reason it turned out to be R. Enjoy!
No Reservations with Katherine Zeta Jones just came out yesterday, and my husband and I watched it last night. I thought it was very goood and my husband(who usually makes fun of chick flicks)also gave it a thumbs up. Definately worth checking out!
good luck chuck is a hilarious romatinc comedy. my husband actually liked it i would def think about trying it!
Hi there S.,
Wow, there are so many great romance movies out there to choose from, but here's a list of my faves that will have you feeling good afterwards. Okay, I'm sure a couple might be a little sad somewhere in between but you'll enjoy them anyway :). Here goes: 13 going on 30, A Walk to Remember, Blast From the Past, Fools Rush In, French Kiss, It Had to be You, Just Like Heaven, Love Actually, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Return to Me, Sabrina (with Harrison Ford), Sweet Home Alabama, The Notebook, Under the Tuscan Sun (my all time favorite), and not sure if this one is out on DVD yet but it was really great is P.S. I Love You, with Hilary Swank. I hope one of these titles you might be able to enjoy!! Have fun!!! T.
"Love Actually" with Hugh Grant. It's my husband's favorite movie. It's not so much a "chick flick" but more of a feel good movie. We watch this about every other month! It never gets old!!! http://www.loveactually.com/home.html
Big Fat Greek Wedding is good because it is romantic but also very funny!
We enjoyed "No Reservations."
My all time favorite romantic movie is The Notebook but believe it or not, Enchanted is soooooo cute and your son would probably like it to. Also, if you're up for a compromise, Pirates of the Caribbean 1 isn't considered a love story but it should be. It has a great balance of comedy, romance, and action. My husband and I both love them. And, if you like cowboy movies, try 8 seconds
I am fond of the Jane Austen movies. My favorite so far is Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightley. I love Jane Austen because of the scenery, costumes, humor and romance.
This is an "oldie" by one of my favorites, While You Were Sleeping
Enjoy Valentines Day!
A.
try the movie Notebook with James Gardner and Jena Rowland I'M not sure of the rating maybe PG-13 not a comedy either but an awesome love story ENJOY!
I love Notting Hill or Titanic.
I haven't seen Fool's Gold but it would be a good one I bet!
Miss Potter was great and my all time fav is Ever After. I just finished watching Becoming Jane about an hour ago and it was good too...all are clean!
NO RESERVATION! just came out this week it has Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart it is suppose to be really cute movie.
I've enjoyed 2 really nice movies lately. One is "School of Life", the other, "The Waitress." They are not super love-storyish, but they're real feel-good movies & watching them could be romantic in itself! We loved 'em & they're pg or pg13. S.
How about a classic? When Harry Met Sally. Or Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail. Any of those Meg Ryan ones are great.
(OK, so it was just pointed out to me that WHMS isn't technically a "classic," but to me it was an instant classic. For a real classic, I have to agree with the person who said "An Affair To Remember," however that one does make me cry!)
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days with Kate Hudson and Matthew Mccougnahey is funny, light hearted and they're a cute couple!
Maid in Manhattan with J.Lo and Ralph Fiennes is great too
I wonder if Failure to Launch is out on DVD....I don't keep up either, but that was hillarious!
This is not exactly a "new" movie but Knotting Hill is really good. Another newer one is "Miss Potter" about Beatrix Potter.
C Stacy
I highly recommend Across the Universe, especially for fans of Beatles music. My husband and I both really enjoyed it.
If you haven't seen The Holiday with Cameron Diaz, it is great!
I loved The Holiday - its mabye one of my favorie Romantic Comedies - I also loved How to lose a Guy in 10 days - very funny, The Notebook is about as Romantic a they come, but a tearjerker! If you like old movies, Philapdelphia Story is a great one! Knocked Up is Very funny, but probably not so PG, I also like 50 First Dates if you like Adam Sandler!
Have you ever seen *The Notebook*??? Awesome romantic sweet movie.....you can rent it.
I recently saw *Atonement* at the theaters and I was just blown away.....sooooo good.
Both of those movies are totally clean (not rated R)and I do have to throw in my favorite, *How to lose a guy in 10 days*. It' funny, cute, CLEAN, the chemistry is GREAT and of course Matthew McConaughey is in it!!!!!!!
(bonus)!
Well those are only 3 suggestions, I can't think at the moment because my 4 & 6 yr. olds are fighting so I gotta take care of that!!!!!
Good luck and hope yall have a fun, blessed V.DAY!!!!!!!!
"What A Girl Wants" & "Runaway Bride" are 2 of my favorites that I can watch over & over again and they are funny and CLEAN.
Hope this helps!
T. C.
Both my husband and I loved "Waitress" with Kerri Russell.
We just recently received License To Wed with Robin Williams from Blockbuster. It is rated PG-13 but some light adult humor but it is a good movie. I thought it was hilarious!
TO S.,
If you have yet to see THE NOTEBOOK, then it is a must.... It is the MOST romoantic film I have seen in years. It is not too heavy, but full of beautiful heart warming moments and a couple of tear jerking bits too! If not this week, then do put it on the list of ones to watch someday!
M.
I can't believe no one has mentioned "Serendipity" - John Cusak and Kate Beckensdale - sooo cute & romantic - A couple reunite years after the night they first met, fell in love, and separated, convinced that one day they'd end up together.
and another I saw recently in the movie - sweet love story including an adorable little musical genius boy -" August Rush" - Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and the boy is Freddie Highmore from The golden Compass and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
"Why did I get married?", by Tyler Perry is an excellent movie, and don't be turned off by the title. I saw it 3 times. It will make you laugh and cry, and it is somewhat kid-friendly. But, if in doubt, go buy the movie at Walmart, and send baby to bed. It is a feel good movie!
My favorite Romantic movie...and pretty much movie in general is "Return to Me" with David Duchovny and Minnie Driver. It wasn't in theaters long, but is a favorite in my circle of friends.
It has a lot of comedy sprinkled in and a cadre of old men "overseeing" the romance that keep a man watching it with you laughing and entertained. It has a little bit of swearing, but is very wholesome aside from that.
My husband and I both laughed all the way through knocked up. I have seen most of the other ones mentioned and would suggest them also, but for a good movie you would both like, my vote is for knocked up!
Just a warning that Love Actually is I believe a "R" rated movie, and it would probably would be a hard "R" for some pretty graphic sex scenes and language. All the other ones suggested are great. I like The Holiday and Lake House as newer ones. 13 going on 30 and Ghost are two of my faves.
Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail are two GREAT Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan chick flicks. Sabrina (the classic one) and Roman Holiday. No Reservations is a good one if you want a more recent one.
Hitch, 13 going on 30 and Sweet Home Alabama are all great and ones that the hubby will enjoy, because they're romantic, but also real comedies with fun stories. The Notebook was a little sappy for us, even though most people love it.
Everafter!!! it is great... you will laugh at the Disney cliches and go away with a great feeling. It's very clean too... there is singing though, so that's an added bonus if you like singing.
We recently watched "The Heartbreak Kid" with Ben Stiller. I can't remember what it's rated, but it was funny and didn't take much concentration. I'm not a huge Ben Stiller fan, and I still liked the movie.
Hi S.,
My husband and I just watched a great movie "Martian Child" which is a warm, funny, and heartfelt story about a widowed father who is a writer of science fiction that adopts a child who believes he is from outer space. It is rated PG, has John Cusack, Joan Cusack and Amanda Peet who stars in it.
The movie "No Reservations" is also very good and rated PG.
Enjoy your evening together!
A.
Just like Heavan (Reese Witherspoon)
Shall We Dance (latest version with Jennifer Lopez)
The Notebook (real tearjerker but sooo romantic and PG 13)
The Perfect Man (Funny and enlightening at the same time)
Lake House (watch closely as several stories)
The Lake House with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves
The Notebook
Happy Valentines. Hope your movie night is as good as one of these.
Stac
I hope this is out on DVD by now-- I think it is-- I highly recommend Dan in Real Life, starring Steve Carrell from "The Office", Dane Cook, and Juliette Binoche. Sweetest, funniest romantic comedy to come along in awhile-- I've put it in my top ten movies, it's so good. The setting is a family reunion. If you see it, let me know how you like it!
My husband and I watched The Holiday, and we loved it. Very light, fun, and cute movie.
One of my newest favorites is The Holiday. Its got Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law. My husband even likes it. It's heartwarming and sweet with a very happy ending as all good love stories should have.
You don't have to wath a new one our favorite is Ghost with ?? senior moment but you get the idea ther are better oldies than new ones and if you don't get to the end of the video so you already know the ending enjoy Valentine's Day KC
Definitely Maybe comes out Valentines Day. try it, looks very promising.
Hi S.,
One I did not think both of us would like really suprised me.
Knock Up (not PG) but so so funny. A good under dog winning the perfect girl movie. It's a chick flick that both me and my husband liked. And laughed our as..... (heads) off.
Hope you find what you are looking for.....
P.
13 Going on 30 with Jennifer Garner! It is a feel good, happy film that isn't vulgar or dark at all. In fact, it has great 80s music, which is a bonus!
I have several. Sorry if they have already been suggested:
Sweet Home Alabama (Reese Witherspoon)
Just Like Heaven (Reese Witherspoon & Mark Ruffalo)
Hitch (Will Smith & Eva Mendes, Kevin James)- very funny, be sure to watch the outtakes of Kevin James
The Wedding Planner (Jennifer Lopez & Matthew McConaughey)
Shall We Dance (JLo & Richard Gere)
Maid in America (JLo & Ralph Fiennes)
While You Were Sleeping (Sandra Bullock & Bill Pullman) - one of my favs!
13 Going on 30 (Jennifer Garner & Mark Ruffalo)
Notting Hill (Julia Roberts & Hugh Grant)
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Kate Hudson & Matthew McConaughey)
That's probably more than enough for one weekend. :)
Have fun & enjoy!
*** I'm so glad Melissa G. mentioned "Return to Me". I was searching imdb for that movie but couldn't remember the actress. I forgot it was Minnie Driver - I thought it was Andie MacDowell. So, thank you, Melissa. That's one of my all time favs, too!!
I believe it is called Without Reservations. Just came out on DVD on Tuesday. It is about two chefs, one of which has a daughter. I cant remember the actors names, but it looks to be a great feel good movie. I think Matthew McConehhey is in it. I could have the wrong title and actor, but I'm sure your local movie store can help. I'm looking forward to watching it this weekend myself.
Ther are no good romantic movies, not with a good story, Maybe is not what your looking. but I'll recomend you "Doctor Zhivago (1965)"
A classic: "Somewhere in Time" is perhaps THE most romantic movie of all time.
I think "The Notebook" is very romantic.
Wow! Everyone got it right on the spot! Listed some great movies! How about Walk the Line with Reese Witherspoone and Joaquin Phoenix? I like the Holiday also! P.S. I love you was great!
Have fun! Let us know what ya think of the movies you watch!
"Hitch" with Will Smith! Great, funny, and guys will like it too! G.
Well S. I like pride & prejudice G(2005)Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen its very good, also Lake House PG Sandra Bullock & keanu Reeves PG (2006).
Not sure if it's out on video yet, but my daughter & I saw it at the dollar movie theater at Coit & Park last night and it was WONDERFUL! It's called, "P.S. I Love You". Really, really sweet, romantic, and funny. Some sad parts, too, but it has a great ending. You'll love it!
Mirror has two faces, Barbara Stristen
I highly recommend "Why Did I get Married" with Tyler Perry and Janet Jackson. I think it is on video now. It was very entertaining.
How to lose a guy in 10 days...so cute and will have you laughing hysterically.
