My daughter is 6 mos old and still not rolling over. She is sitting up on her own and beginning to stand by herself while holding onto the couch. My pediatrician says she just skipped the rolling over stage, but I wanted to know if anyone else has run into this with their children?

What can I do next?

The same thing happened with my little boy! He just never rolled over until he was walking, pretty much! He is a healthy 3 year old now! Don't worry!

My oldest daughter rolled all over the place, but my youngest never really rolled much at all. She is 9 1/2 months and is crawling all over the place and starting to cruise a little! I was a little concerned also, but I don't think there was any need to be, she is moving along just fine now!

Hope this helps!

My older son did not roll at all until after he started to crawl at 9 months. I would not worry about it. He is a very active little 3 1/2 year old. He does everything else well. Another bonus for me was he was crawling but I could lie him on his back and leave the room and he was like a turtle, and would just lie there until I turned him over. He would then crawl away. Please don't worry. I am sure everything will be fine

Hi A.:
People make a terrible mistake trying to compare our children with others. Or for that matter anyone with anyone ele.
All of us are a lot alike but at the same time very different in many ways. We are all unique masterpieces.
If your daughter can sit up by herself and stand on her own hanging onto a couch or something for support at the age of 6 months - I'd say she is ahead of a lot of other babies and she will probably be walking before she is a year old.
She does not need to roll over unless she so chooses because she can sit up and stand up. You have quite a little jewell there mom and dad. Allow her the right to do things her way and learn from her.
ONE SIZE NOT NECESSARILY FITS ALL.
Sincerely
D. Y.

I never went through my kids not rolling over but I can say that some kids don't go through the rolling over stage. Some may start doing other things such as crawling and standing before they roll. There is nothing to worry about. All kids develop differently.

My son now 22 months didn't ever roll over until after he learned to walk and he wasn't really walking until well after his 1st birthday! I just assumed it was because he was a big kid (30 lbs at 12 mos). You have nothing to worry about!

My daughter was cruising at 8.5 months, scooting on her butt at 9.5 months, didn't crawl until 10 months, and didn't figure out rolling over until AFTER she was crawling (around 10.5 months I think). She then took her first steps at 11 months and was walking everywhere by 12.5 months.

Some kids will just skip certain milestones or do them out of order. As long as your daughter is hitting her other milestones like you described, she is probably fine. Just give her lots of floor time to practice all of her different movements, and she will eventually figure things out.

I know it's frustrating, but she'll get there :-)

My oldest 2 went from pulling up to walking. they didn't learn to crawl until after they could walk. I also have one that couldn't do anything involving stomach muscles. She just didn't seem to have them for the longest time. There double digit kids now and are healthy. Some children just develop different muscles at different rates.

My daughter is 9 (almost 10months) and just now started to roll over. She was doing the same as your daughter at 6months. Then all of a sudden- we were laying in bed and she realized she could roll over. She hasn't stopped since. And she's still walking furniture and everything.

My oldest sat up before she rolled over and walked before she crawled (she did a butt scoot instead of crawling). She even walked early. Now she is a very strong-willed and imaginative soon-to-be three year old.

The fact that your little girl is reaching other developmental milestones should tell you that everything is definitely ok. She is not going to be in college walking around and not able to roll over!!!! :) She will get around to it!!!

My firstborn didn't roll over until almost 7 months. He was crawling (army crawling - never did the hands and knees thing) at 8 months and was walking by himself by 10 months. My 2nd child was rolling across the room, instead of crawling, from 3-6 months when she decided to stand up and cruise along furniture everywhere and walked by herself at 8 months. My 3rd child follow my 1st child's lead and didn't roll over until close to 7 months, either. She's now 10 months and on the verge of taking steps by herself.

I wouldn't worry about it because she's sitting up by herself and pulling herself up to stand. Some babies skip rolling over and some skip crawling. Neither are real developmental milestones. Is she crawling? If she's crawling along with the sitting up and standing up then I would agree with your doctor. If you're still worried, contact First Steps and see what they say.

Let me start off by saying don't stress out too much about a milestone here and a milestone there. I did this with our second child (boy now 13 months), and I have learned it is better for the ENTIRE family if I just chill out. :) He rolled over late, crawled late (at 10 months), and is STILL not walking (13 months). Having said that, he achieved all the fine motor milestones very early. He is small for his age. He's 17 lbs. 14 oz. and is still rear-facing in the carseat. I don't know if his size is what is causing him to achieve the gross motor skills later or not. However, I have tried to stop thinking of reasons. Seriously, you are good if it is only 1 milestone that she has not completed.

When my son wasn't crawling, everyone was telling us he might just skip it and go to walking. Like I said earlier, he did end up crawling IN HIS OWN TIME. That has been the biggest lesson I have learned from all of this...and everyone kept telling me (although I didn't really want to listen)....kids do things in their own time, when THEY are ready.

I hope this has helped ease your mind. :)

PS- Also, remember, milestones are just average ages, they are not exact.

My daughter did the same thing. She was really late to roll over and crawl, but early to sit and stand. My doctor said it was because she wasn't getting enouth tummy time. My son is two months old and I'm trying to be better about the tummy time with him. He really hates it too!

A., my girl hated being on her belly and only rolled over when she knew I wasn't looking. rolling over never looks like you thought it would. It is messy and somewhat half of what you think it will be. My baby never rolled over in some level of mastery that you see on tv. She rolled over, probably a few times and then started pulling herself up at about 7 months old, and walked at 12 months and started running at 12 months, 1 hour and 30 seconds :)... it really was that quick. Enjoy the time you can still place her on her favorite blanket with her favorite toys and still be able to walk into another room to get a glass of water before somehow the picture on the wall has been knocked over. I'd explain, but you will know... you know from teaching what is right, don't stray because of the stories you hear from others...

Kids all do things at different times and in different orders. If the doc isn't worried, you shouldn't be either:)

Do not worry. Kids skip stages all the time. My second son never crawled. He just started walking. Sounds like she is ahead of the game if she is already standing when holding onto to the couch at 6 months.

Hey A. my son is turning 4 months the 28th of June. He has rolled over a couple times from tummy to back. I would not worry at all your DR is right she skipped that rolling over stage entirely wow! Do not fret at all every baby develops a bit faster or slower some hit milestones early, some get teeth early or late it all depends. You could have a crawler on your hands in no time flat and she could be walking before her first birthday from the sound of it. A good book to reference is "What to Expect the First Year" I have found it quite helpful it pinpoints the different miles stones each month. Sounds like you are enjoying your daughter immensely and that she is hitting certain milestones early.

This is normal. My daughter hated being on the floor. She did roll over once or twice and never did it again. She started pulling herself up at around 7 months and was walking at 10 months. She is now a healthy active 2.5 year old. My 7 month old son rolls everywhere. Each baby is different. Don't worry as long as she is moving and growing. Good Luck

Hi A.,
This is normal. I have 3 daughters and my oldest whom is now 12 did every little thing that most babies do (the so normal stuff, rolled over, crawled..etc..), than my now 10 year old when she was little, skipped the crawling, because she hated being on the floor or even in the crawl position, never crawled, she went right into walking at age 7 1/2 months! My two year old didn't really crawl, but walked a little later, she was exactly one when she walked (it was a surprise on her birthday)! But she does things that most 2 year olds (that I've known) can't do, like: Spell her name, write most of her alphabets, count, draw shapes and recognizes shapes, write her name, knows exactly what she wants & when she wants it, clost to telling time, she has so much patience for her age its kind of scary!! But we had her tested, and she's just really smart and very healthy! So don't let it get to ya, Your daughter is just bright and beautiful, she knows what she's interested in and she's happy with it! Just be patient and be glad that she's healthy!
