My daughter got a spot on her forehead that the dr said was ringworm. We treated it 3 times and every time it goes away within a week. Is it normal for it to keep coming back? We dont have any pets for her to be getting it from?!

What can I do next?

A word of advice-- be very careful not to let it get onto her scalp. I had ringworm as a child-- on the very top of my head. I still have a bald spot there.

My 8 yr old son also had a "ringworm" spot in the middle of his forehead. I tried the anti-fungal creams and shampoos to no avail. My (former) doctor made me feel like a terrible mom by saying I wasn't vigilent enough about applying the creams regularly, etc. Long story short, I got mad and changed to a new doctor and explained how the ringworm spot would not go away. The dr took one look at my son and immediately sent us to the university research children's hospital. Finally, he was diagnosed with Lupus of the skin (discoid) and very, very sensitive to the sun (we discovered this after one particularly hot summer). It was very hard to diagnose because blood tests weren't showing markers for Lupus yet (b/c it wasn't systemic it was only on the skin). They did not expect a young boy to have Lupus (it's usually triggered in females and hormone related) and they didn't expect a Black kid to be so allergic to the sun. So, if it keeps coming back- it may not be ringworm. Don't let the doctors make you feel like you aren't keeping your kids clean- your daughter may need a dermatologist, lab work, and a biopsy.

Unfortunately, you don't have to have pets to get ringworm. The best thing that I have found for ringworm to treat and get rid of it, is LAMISIL Cream. It is an antifungil cream, usually used for athletes foot, but......it does wonders for ringworm. Keep applying daily until it is completely gone. I would recommend 1-2 times a day until gone. Good luck!

I got a case of ringworm several years ago - don't know where from. It was a spot on my arm, and ended up spreading. I had it for close to 2 months before it was gone. I went to the dr twice, and went through 2 tubes of the cream that was prescribed. I am pretty sure the dr said that it is the same infection that causes athletes foot, just in a different location. Good luck with your daughter - I would see if there is another cream you could get - sorry I don't remember the name.

You can get ringworm from the grass if another animal has touched it. You can also get it from another person and I'm sure other ways too. http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/tc/ring...
I'd take her back and tell them it keeps coming back.
Also, just in case, ask your doc if the treatment he/she gave has any cortizone in it because that will make it grow.
Funny story. My son has excema and I thought a circle was excema and it ended up being ringworm... which I found out after I grew it bigger... poor baby. lol He was only a year old...
Good luck!

B.,
My son was diagnosed with ringworm of the scalp by our pediatrician. We treated several times and it would seem to go away but would return. I took him to the dermatologist who correctly diagnosed seborheic dermatitis.(not sure of the correct spelling) It went away.

My mother had a bout with it. The Dr told her that it just sometimes is in the air and some people are more susceptible than others. Lotrimin will clear it up though.

It took me MONTHS to get rid of my daughter's ringworm. Once you see the last signs of the spot, you need to keep putting the medicine on for I think for a week or so after. She got it last year in November and I battled it off and on until February.

My daughter got it from sitting bare bottomed in a shower on a cruise ship. I didn't even think about it -- just stuck her in there to bathe her and she ended up with ringworm. Nice, huh?? There went my "mother of the year award." LOL

I understand that there is a medicine that can be taken orally, but I think it can be hard on the liver, so they don't often give it to little ones.

I'm sorry I don't remember all of the specifics, but I can tell you it took forever to get rid of.

Good luck.

Does your daughter attend school? Very very common place to get it.. My son kept getting it one school year to the point i was about to lose my mind. come to find out, he was sitting next to a girl who had it all in her scalp and several places on her arms. we would get rid of one spot just to get another. i finally pitched a fit at the school and the child's parents were basically forced to have her seen and treated by a dr before she could return. once she was gone, he never got another spot. anti fungal creams do work.

Have you tried treating it with Melaleuca oil? It is a really great fungicide that has worked well for me in other situations, though I've never used it for ringworm. Worth giving a try!

Yep, my daughter got it too. You should buy a tube of Lotrimin at the pharmacy and use it for the full 14 days. If you don't it keeps coming back because you did not completely killed off the fungus. Also it very contagious, changing sheets, not scratching etc. the usual precautions so she doesn't spread it to other parts of her body. On average it should clear in 2 weeks.

I hope this helps every summer my daughter would get ringworm in the same place her right four arm. The only thing that worked was Lotrimin anti-fungal cream.. I would wash be bedspread and sheets and have her soak in the bath every night.. I would apply the cream 2 or 3x a day.. Now that I'm thinking about it this past summer is the first summer that she hasn't had that problem... Well I guess since it didn't come back this summer you know out of sight out of mind.. Good luck I see you got lots of good advice..

Ck out his web site for more information http://www.lotrimin.com/edu.aspx?eduid=3

I have 4 kids & they kept getting it over & over again. It finally went away after using the cream & making sure I changed their bedding every day. New sheet, new pillowcase, & new blanket-every day. That helped it clear up pretty quickly once I started doing that.

If your daughter plays in a sand box, that could be the problem. Cats like to use the bathroom in them, and that causes ring worms.

I know that Blue Star Ointment will get rid of them.
