This is a fairly common complaint. For most women I think it is something that just gets better over time. If it does not improve as time goes on please see a doctor or chiropractor for some relief. Things they don't tell you when you are in labor!

I experienced the same thing after my last child. They stuck me so many times, I lost count. I suffered for almost 4 years but I no longer suffer with the pain at that sight anymore. You can get relief. Just send me a message and I can tell you how I did it. It does get better not worse.

I have heard of this happening, but I don't have any experience with it. Have you talked to your doctor?

I had the same thing, I always figured it was because they stuck me four times!! Sometimes, even now, three years later I feel a twinge and I get low back aches frequently. A year after I would still have significant pain at times. I usually do some stretching to help. A great one that helps me is to get on all fours and arch my back up like a cat while inhaling, then dip it down and exhale. Also you can lay on your back with your arms laid out horizontally on the floor and lift your knees up as if you were going to pull them to your chest but drop them down toward your left side while looking to the right then reverse if for the other side, if you google "torso twist" you can probably find a picture of what I am talking about, that stretch is awesome. But if you just hop online and look up "low back stretches" you should find some good ones. Anyway, not sure if it is "normal" but I had it and short of going in for an MRI, don't think the dr can do too much. So I just manage it if I have pain there and try to stretch it out. If you think about it right after having your epidural you began to carry a baby who was increasing in weight and putting extra pressure on your lower back, that is what I have always figured was a big factor. Best wishes!!

I was stuck more than 20 times and had a lot of scar tissue. (I had gained a tremendous amount of weight due to an undiagnosed health problem--but that's another story!) I guess they thought it would be like sticking a needle into jello, but it wasn't.
I had horrible back pain. It took a couple of years of core exercises and a myofascial release of the scar tissue to get rid of the pain. Yoga still makes my back hurt 17 years later, so I don't do that.
Hope you find relief.

Yeah...it can take a week or so to heal. I'm always sore afterwards.

Try acupuncture. I had back pain during pregnancy and afterward and it did wonders. People think that it's painful but the needles are the same thickness as a strand of hair, but usually you can't even feel it. It's great for all kinds of pain relief. Some insurance plans will cover it, and even if it doesn't, it could be worth it to you.

I had the same thing. I am a professional dancer so my muscles were already limber and when you are pregnant a hormone is released to make stretch the muscles in your body preparing for giving birth. There may be some scar tissue at the site of the epidural. Between all of these factors I had, I had excruciating back pain and nothing I did provided relief until I saw my doctor. He sent me for physical therapy. After the first week I started to get some relief and after 6 weeks I was better. My therapist worked on manually stretching my back and then taught me the proper stretches and back exercises to rebuild the muscles. I still have flare ups every so often but I now know the proper stretches to head it off.

I only had an eperdural w/ my first kid of four... it didn't "kick" in till after I had her, so I didn't even attempt it with the others. It doesn't sound right that it is still bothering you a year after the fact... talk to your doctor & see if he/she has any suggestions.

Eventhough they are trianed very well - sometimes it is hard to get the needle in just right, since every back it a little different... someone may have missed a little. Go see your doc & talk to them - they are the best at letting you know what might have happened & why it's still bothering you.

I had that after both of my births. It has now been 5 years since the first birth, and I cannot lay flat on my stomach without my back completely freezing up. (I had previous back issues before giving birth though). I mentioned it to my doctor, and they suggested yoga. Been there, done that - still an issue. I will say the pain has decreased over the years. I plan to have a 3rd in a few years, and will not tell the doctor cause I am afraid they will say no epidural. I will not give birth without that wonder drug. So, I guess I will live with the pain.

My one and only daughter is 10 years old and I was stuck 3 times before they got the needle in. I did have back issues before the pregnancy and I had a disk surgery about 4 years ago. Having said that, there is scar tissue where the needles were stuck and on rainy/snowy days, I still have some discomfort in those areas. I opted not to have any more children mostly because the thought of anyone sticking one of those needles in my back makes me want to faint and having another baby without the epidural isn't an option (I'd need to have another c-section).

Everyone's back is different and I'd say that mine definately hurt worse when I was lifting a baby/toddler those first few years. The only advice I can give is to bend from your knees to help protect your back. If it's an option, I'd recommend physical therapy so they can try to stretch the muscles around the area and also teach you how to move. I also recommend massage. Good luck.

I had that happen after my first child, 7 years ago. There was extreme pain and tenderness at the site of the spinal, and I couldn't even ride in a car w/out a hot rice sock putting pressure on that spot. It took a good chiropractor and 18 months of hell to feel normal again. Even now, after 2 more and 7 years, sometimes it will still hurt. Good luck to you!
