Has anyone used rice milk instead of regular milk or soy? My one year old has not transitioned well from soy formula to soy milk. HIs pedi doesnt understand why and has no answers for me but i would like to stop having to buy the expensive cans of formula for older kids. So has anyone had experience with Rice milk how is it in comparsion to soy? and is there one kind that is better then another?

What can I do next?

I prefer Rice Dream for taste. You can buy powder nutrition suplments similar to formula and add it in if you like.

My vote is for goat milk. It's easy to digest, similar to breast milk, and no hormones. Rice is fine too, as long as you get the kind enriched with calcium, vitamins A & D. I like Almond milk myself, but for a baby, I'd try goats milk first. Soy milk has alot of estrogen (my mom uses it to get rid of hot flashes and it does wonders), which is not a good thing for kids, especially boys. My baby has a dairy allergy, but has tolerated goat milk and yogurt fine.

You might also try goats milk, it has a fairly mild taste.

My son who is now 8 had ALL kinds of issues with formula and breast milk. Rice milk is a good alternative, but you have to suppliment a liquid vitamin with it. What worked really good for us was Goat milk, you can buy it powdered in a can or liquid. Good luck.

Another recommendation for goat milk. My DD has very specific allergies and couldn't handle cow milk. I didn't want to do soy because of the hormones. She started on goat milk through a supplemental nursing system at 1 month old and was on it until 14 months old. We bought some liquid pediatric vitamins called Pediatrvite (sp?) from our naturopath and added that to the milk. (We used the powdered)

Now she does oat milk or hemp milk. She just didn't care for rice milk and I didn't blame her it looks like dirty dish water. It's very thin and grey.

Hemp milk is expensive but it has Omega fatty acids in it. We buy it for a change but Oat milk is her staple milk. We buy that one by the case at PCC.

My granddaughter was allergic to both milk products and soy. She drank an expensive formula that did not have milk products in it. I think it was Nutragemin.

She accepted rice milk easily. I've heard it suggested to add just a bit of rice milk to the formula that she is used to and gradually increase the amount of rice milk (or soy milk) while reducing the amount of formula. I don't remember if my daughter did that or not.

I do remember that she did not give formula in a sippy cup. I think that this provided not only a transition from bottle but also to rice milk and juice. She always gave juice only in a sippy cup. It seems possible to me that if you're giving him soy milk in the bottle he might feel "tricked."

Another idea. I'm lactose intolerant and also allegic to soy. I use only rice milk. Perhaps it was easier for my granddaughter because she saw me drinking it. You could try drinking it with him. And if he likes to copy big brother try getting him to drink it too.

Have you tasted the soy milk? Seems to me the flavor is strong. Compare the taste of soy formula with soy milk and see if you can find a difference that you could rememdy by diluting or adding something else to the soy milk.

Do you serve the soy milk at the same temperature as the soy formula?

And a note about goat milk. If your son is on a soy formula because he's lactose intolerant goat milk may not work. I love the taste of goat milk but I still had considerable flatulence with it.

my only concern would be the calcium.

Yes, for many of my son's first years we got Rice Dream rice milk. I used it in pancakes, soups, gravies, etc... works great! I get enriched, so it has calcium and other vitimins that would be in milk. We use cow milk now though. I keep some rice milk around for when we have colds and are stuffy or mucusy. Soy has too much estrogen to be consumed on a regular basis especially for boys.

Rice milk is great, especially the enriched version. Just remember it has little to no protein compared to goat or soy.
