Rice Cookers

Hi everyone.

I had a Zojirushi rice cooker for 10 years (and I bought it used at a garage sale) and I loved it. But the chord eventually had some issues so I threw it away. Well, I have now purchased (but not used) two different rice cookers and the reviews for one seem to be pretty good and the other had no reviews and I am trying to figure out which one to keep (or should I return both to the store and just buy another Zojirushi!)

We eat a lot of rice, so this appliance will get heavy use. I purchased from Target an Aroma digital 16 cup stainless cool to touch rice cooker and from Kohls a 20 cup Oster stainless cool to touch digital rice cooker. After purchasing the Aroma I found the Oster for just a little more at Kohls and thinking that Oster is a better brand and I had a gift card I needed to spend, I purchased the Oster and planned to return the Aroma. However, seeing the reviews of the other Oster rice cookers compared to the Aroma, I'm wondering if I was wrong.

Do you have one of these rice cookers, and what do you think about it? How much use does it get? Does it have trouble cooking the rice (some complained that 4 hours later it was just starting to heat) or the non stick surface of the pan flake off? Did it break in less then a year?

I was so disappointed when I saw the other Osters (no reviews on this specific model 3071) got bad reviews and that some have problems with the Aroma in less then a year. I know you get what you pay for, but I thought a $50 rice cooker should be pretty decent...

THANKS! I'd happily return them and buy another Zojirushi (after all, I only paid $5 for my first one so I guess it evens out in the end.)

So What Happened?

Ok, I think that's what I needed to hear. I'll return BOTH tomorrow and get the Zojirushi instead. I was hoping to save a little money but if you have to replace a cheaper appliance several times when the more expensive one would have lasted, then it's time to spend more for the better appliance. For those of you who don't know, Zojirushi makes them for commercial use and it's the brand that all my Korean friends use (how I got my first one was at a Korean church sale.)

Why I thought getting an American rice cooker was a good idea is beyond me...Americans don't usually eat a lot of rice!!

Thank you so much for all the replies and well wishes,
S.

I know nothing about rice cookers, but I read to the bottom of your post and was overwhelmed at all you have on your plate (not just rice!). You will be in my prayers for grieving your recent losses and for your husband's healing. Please take good care of yourself as I know you do your family and remember to reach out for support on the "big stuff".

We have a Krups and I am bearing with it until it breaks. I'm not sure what kind of rice you cook - I cook sweet rice, brown rice, white rice, and rice porridge (juk or xi fan) and my Krups cannot handle making anything but the brown or white. My parents swear by the Tatung brand, and I hear Tiger/Zojirushi are pretty trustworthy brands. The Tatung brand (indirect heating type) allows you to pour some water in between the heating element and the bowl, which makes for a really delicious rice. Also, the bowl is stainless steel which is an added plus.

Good luck with everything...you have been through so much! You are amazing!

I have an Aroma stainless steel rice cooker. We have had for about a year. We cook rice about once a week and steam vegetables about every other day.

I have had no issues. This is the first rice cooker/steamer we have had and it is wonderful. I always use a plastic spatula or wooden spatula to remove the rice. I never would use a regular silverware. I would believe this would leave a scratch in the nonstick sides.

I have the Zojirushi rice cooker. I like it alot. I use it at least two or more time a week. The first one I had melted due to kids putting it on mycrock pot and melting it. I liked it so much that even though it was very expensive I went and got another one. I have not used any other rice cooker but friends have the other type and they keep having to replace due to over use.

From my experience with them, my Zori has lasted longer and performed better than the Aroma and Oster ones I (or my roommates) had in college. Maybe they're better now but you can't go wrong with the Zori.

I have a Zojirushi also. Have had it for 9 years. Love it!
I'd go get another one of those if you really liked it. The brand has already proved itself to you.

Your family is in my prayers as you battle cancer/ chemo.
And I love the names of your children! How special!
