Hey Moms! I had a question about returning to work. I relocated with my husband when he had the opportunity to open a branch of the company. I stayed at home for about two years and then I took a position at a daycare so my son could get the socialization. I worked there for a year and then I have been home for the last 8 months for the birth of my second son. I am in the process of returning to work full time. I am getting alittle discouraged job searching so I need some advice. I have a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. I have been writing in my cover letter that I chose to become a stay at home mom, however, I have been assisting my husband with administrative and hr processes. How can I make myself marketable so that I can get more responses? What are some good job search engines? I have been using Craigslist(which most of the postings are scams), monster.com, and careerbuilder.com. If there are any sucess stories out there for moms returning to work, it would be very encouraging...Im returning to work for financial reasons and because Im ready to go back to work.

What can I do next?

It's a tough market - I think you are doing all the right things, but it's just really tough to get responses when people don't know you. I would suggest that you use your social network. If you are not already a part of Linkedin.com, you should join (it's free). It's the Facebook of the professional world, so prospective employers may go on there to see who you know, what recommendations you have (be sure to ask people who know you well to write recommendations). It's also a great way to see if someone you want to work for, has any contacts in common with you. You can then ask the contact that you know, to introduce you to the hiring manager that they know. Then you're not a total stranger, and your resume will at least be looked at.

The other thing I would suggest is that you join a local networking group. Try the Junior League, Rotary Club, any professional organizations that pertain to your industry, etc. The more people you know, the better your chances of hearing about higher-level positions and being recommended for them.

One other thing to try, if you're open to it, is working for a temp agency. These days, a lot of companies are hiring temps instead of permanent hires (because they don't have to offer benefits to temps) - however sometimes these positions will become permanent positions. It's a good way to get your foot in the door.

Good luck to you! I hope you find your dream job soon!

I have had the most success with using a qualified recruiter. They will present you to the candidate and will avoid all the online craziness. The previous posters were right about Linkedin as well.

Passive job seeking through the boards won't get you very far. The number one way of finding a job is through networking. Get on LinkedIn and use Facebook and Twitter to share your job search news with everyone you know. Start attending meetings for professional groups in your field. Most will hold special sessions at the end where employers announce any openings.

Also, get in touch with professional recruiters. They will have a good sense of the job market and give you candid feedback about how you're presenting yourself. You might consider temporary work as a way to update your resume and get your foot in the door at prospective employers.

Good luck!
