Return of Period - Columbus,OH

I have a question for you breatfeeding moms. I am weaning my 13 month old daughter and was wondering how long it took for your periods to return. I had this same question after I weaned my son, and found out I was pregnant again before my periods returned. I would like to have more children, but I was looking forward to a few months off (no breastfeeding/pregnancy) before we try for another child. So I am feeling a bit of deja vu here and I'm a little nervous. As a side note I have taken one negative pregnancy test already and she is down to once nursing a day.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your advice everyone. I realize I didn't phrase my question very well, by some of the responses I received. We are using birth control, I was just still nervous b/c my periods weren't back. They still aren't back, but I think I just need to be more patient.
As it turns out, I did just need to be patient. My period returned 7 weeks after I stopped breatfeeding my daughter. It just took longer than I expected and made me a little nervous.

Hi K., once I dropped to one feeding/day, I noticed my cycle starting (i.e., change in discharge). I believe my period started about 4-5 weeks after I noticed that change. I did completely wean my son during that 4-5 weeks, but I believe the cycle/hormones started shortly after dropping to one feeding. Years ago, I did not start my cycle or period until after my first child was completely weaned. I used a charting system when I was trying to conceive #2 that relies on discharge. I don't chart anymore, but it has been very helpful knowing the signs to look for regarding my cycle. I would recommend it for anyone wanting to get pregnant or not wanting to get pregnant.
Good luck!

My cycle started back during the time I was weaning my daughter. I had stopped pumping and was down to 1 or 2 feedings a day. I noticed my milk was not coming in as well, then sure enough, I got my period. It's probably different for everyone though.

Hi K., As you are aware, absence of periods does NOT mean you can't get pregnant! Everyone is different in terms of when their periods start, and it doesn't matter how much you're nursing, you can still get pregnant. If you don't want to get pregnant, please consider using a reliable form of contraception!

Hate to say it-but no two of us are alike! I breastfed all 6 of my children, and my periods returned differently with each child. I will say that every Dr. I had said you can never count on breastfeeding for 100% birth control between babies. To almost guarantee a break from being pregnant, a condom helps. Not always fun-but they usually work.
