My friend is 3 months pregnant, and all of a sudden she had pain around the appendix area. the pain started getting unbearable for her, so she went to see a doctor and found out that one of her ovary was twisted and had turned black. even after pain killers the pain did not subside. after the doctors and surgeons sat together and decided that they have to remove that ovary, which might cause and abortion. But by God's grace after the surgery they baby was still fine.
My question is Would the pregnancy go on normal or there could be any complications later. And Can she conceive in the future without any problem. As this is only her first baby.

What can I do next?

I has a twisted ovarian cyst the size of a grapefruit. It was discovered when I was 2 months along. It was removed successfully and I was able to conceive 2 other healthy children on one ovary. The thing to remember is it may take longer as she will only ovulate every other month. Hope this helps.

I have no idea about the pregnancy progressing normally from here. I would think so, since the ovaries already did their part. But that would definitely be a question for the doctors.

As far as concieving with one ovary- your ovaries take turns each month releasing an egg. So to only have one functioning ovary means she will only be fertile every other month. I'm not sure if you can know which ovary's "turn" it is, to know whether you will be fertile this month or not. But it is definitely possible to still conceive with only one. It will be more difficult and likely take longer since she is only fertile half the time as someone with 2, but still possible. Lots of women only have one functioning ovary. She should see a fertility specialist when she is ready to try to get pregnant again, and they can most likely do all sorts of things to increase her odds of getting pregnant.

What a scary thing. I'm so glad the baby came through the surgery.

Edit to add:

Laurie could be totally right on this, I'm not sure. I was repeating what my cousin's doctor told her who has had an ovary removed. Guess the best thing to do is have her ask her doctor.

I'm not sure since I've never heard of this being done during pregnancy, but I do know that the ovaries produce hormones, so with one ovary gone, the balance of hormones may be off until her body has a chance to adjust, and I'm guessing that could affect the pregnancy.
As for future pregnancies, when one ovary is removed or is not functioning like it should, the other ovary usually starts ovulating every month to compensate, so yes, she will be able to conceive in the future assuming everything else is working like it should.

You have two ovaries, so she can still conceive as the remaining ovary will mature an egg and release it regularly.

These are really queestions better suited for the mom to ask her medical doctor rather than an internet parenting forum. She should not hesitate to ask her doctor about potential complications and her reproductive future

I usually do not like to contradict moms on here, but you do not ovulate from one ovary to the other every month. As a matter of fact most women have a dominate ovary and mostly ovulate from that ovary over a lifetime.
