I have been diagnosed with sublingual hypothyroidism i don't like taking synthetics I was wondering if anyone knows of some natural herbs or other things to take to help with this. I heard coconut oil was good to take.

I believe in natural stuff so much. We eat so much processed foods already I don't want anything else in me that isn'tgood.

Since I am not a doctor, I can't tell you what to do with your medication. But, as a person who was diagnosed with Thyroid Disease twenty years ago, I can tell you what happens if you don't take care of it. Your thyroid controls your metabolism, which controls your heart rate and your nervous system. I had my thyroid removed when I was 24. Before the surgery, I was on Synthroid for 5 years. I developed a tumor and my thyroid had to be removed. Shortly after the surgery, I lost my balance and had could not focus my eyes. I went to the emergency room and they thought that I was having a stroke. To make a long story short, my synthroid dose was not high enough so my nervous system went crazy. They increased my dose and I've been fine since then. I don't know if your doctor told you this, but you cannot live without some kind of medication. It's not as bad as cancer, but you can die from Thyroid Disease if you don't control it.
I just noticed that you are recently separated. Thyroid Disease causes mood swings that are uncontrollable. You may notice a huge change in your disposition once you get your thyroid under control. Don't give up on your marriage until you know that your thyroid is properly medicated.

perhaps you'd consider herbal and diet changes in addition to traditional medicine. also keep in mind that many synthetics are copies of only the part of the natural remedy that is necessary. and keep in mind that many poisons exist in nature. you should be able to find a doctor who will work with you to find a balance of traditional and alternative medications. good luck to you.

I too am hypothyroid but for a different reason. I started out on Synthroid, which is the synthetic version of thyroid replacement. Now I take Armour Thyroid which is natural thyroid from dried up pig thyroid. If you can get past the fact that it comes from pigs, it will work great. I notice a significant difference in how I feel compared to when I was on the synthetic. It's because it replaces more than just T4. It replaces T3 also. Now I don't know the in's and out's of your type of hypothyroidism but I'd think you could be on Armour. It's what they used to use before Synthroid came along. There's info on the web, just google Armour thyroid. A lot of docs won't tell you about Armour because they they are pushed into prescribing synthroid. I was refused an endocrinology appointment because I was using Armour instead. But there are docs out there that will prescribe the Armour. Hope this has helped!

Hi T.,
I was reading an article on hypothyroidism and one of the important things they wrote about was the need to supplement your diet with iodine as Linda mentioned. They also mentioned things which affect your thyroid and/or leech out the iodine in your body, and that is exposure to chemicals in your everyday surroundings. Since you said you prefer things natural, I'm sure that will help, particularly with food and household products.
I don't know how you feel about multi-vitamins, whether you count those as being synthetic, but the ones I take contain 100% of the recommended amount of iodine and they use a patented formular which allows your body to process the minerals and vitamins in the same way as natural ones. Let me know if you want more info.

Please listen to your doctor, Bridget is right. I also have hypothyoidism and have been for 12 years. If I miss a dose for more than a day headaches set in and I feel terrible. I can understand wanting the best and healthy things for your body but this really is not something to play with.

I too have issues with my thyroid, not sure what at this point. My levels were okay back in March but I had complex nodules (mixed with fluid and solid mass) on my thyroid and do not have insurance at this moment so I can not get re-checked at this point.

However after I found out about the nodules I did some research. Below is an e-mail that a woman who had thyroid cancer wrote to me following my inquiry, so this may help you as well. I am still breast feeding so I have to watch what I intake vitamin wise, but once I stop I have a vitamins all picked out that has everything that is needed for my optimal health.

E-mail that was sent to me:

"Generally fluid filled nodules are non-cancerous. My recommendation would be to get on some iodine (Iodoral http://www.illnessisoptional.com, selenium and Vit C. See my website www.naturalthyroidchoices.com for the thyroid supporting nutrients. These three are the key to reducing nodules of the thyroid. Since you do not have insurance this is the best option for now."
