We will be relocating to the Houston area very soon. I currently have a child with some special needs going into Pre-K in August. Please help me to learn about your area schools. How it works, are their districts or lotteries? How is the special education and what do they call it in Texas? What are the best schools, private or public? I need all around help, and I thought of other moms, first! Any information will be helpful!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we finally settled in Katy, TX. What a beautiful city & the schools, I love them. We just had our first ARD meeting to discuss my child education plan & the school provided all she needed! I am not happy with the diagnosis, but I will sit with it, for now. Thanks for all your responses!!!

Hi M.,

We have school districts here in Houston.

It depends on what kind of special needs your daughter has. If she needs speech therapy etc. they do provide it in a setting called 'PPCD' i.e Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities. PPCD goes up until they are eligible for Kindergarden @ either age 5 or 6. It also accomodates kids with all types of issues, such as Autism, Downs, Cerebral Palsy etc.

Once she goes into Kindergarden, if she still requires services they are provided, but to be honest with you TX is not a good State for Sp. Needs kids. Fort Bend ISD is considered one of the better school districts for kids with issues, specifically around the Katy area. Overall education-wise, the Cy-Fair school districts is also one of the best.

Hope this helps somewhat. :)

My brothers and I went to Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District and now our children go to this school district. It has been recognized as the 3rd best in Texas and 10th in the US. They are well known for their Special Education.
Here is the website: www.cfisd.net
Hope it Helps!

I would start with calling a school that you think you may live near. Ask your realtor. Tell the school what kind of symptoms your child has or his/her needs. They should tell you what to do from there. If they are not very helpful, demand or call another school. I understand they must help if they are to continue to receive state and federal funding.

Here is my experience. I live in Fort Bend County (Houston suburb). It is a wonderful ISD. I thought my daughter had a hearing and/or language problem. She was very young, maybe around 4. A family member told me the school ISD should help even at her age. I called her future elementary school and was surprised that they were set up to schedule immediate appts with a diagnostic specialist that happened to be at our school. The ISD also sent out a technician to my house to help us diagnos and develop a learning plan. I later learned that my oldest did everything for her.
My point being, ask your local school for help. They are required to offer it...even at such young ages. The majority of the services are free!! Maybe also plan your move around a very responsive and well staffed elementary school.
I wish you luck on your move.
