I have not lived in Athens GA but I know there is a college there, so there should be some cultural life going on....
We did move from Indiana to Arkansas so I think I can speak to some of the culture shock you may experience. Be prepared to get teased about your accent, though perhaps this will be minimized in a college town. When first meeting people it didn't take long to hear, "Y'all aren't from around here, are you?" it was not really a question........At least once a week you'll be tempted to mutter, through gritted teeth, "It's YOU PEOPLE who have the accent, not me!"
"Y'all" can be singular or plural.
Teach your kids to say "Ma'am" and "Sir" but especially "Ma'am".
If you garden, you'll need to adjust your perceptions of the proper planting times.
In addition to finding a new doctor, dentist, veterinarian, insurance agent, dry cleaner, etc you will need to find a good exterminator. Cockroaches are way more common in the south than in the north. (The good news about this is that, because this is so, you are not necessarily considered a bad housekeeper, because everyone gets them.) Be prepared to "go steady" with your exterminator, since this will be a long-term relationship--to paraphrase the old song "Once is Not Enough", because if you treat for roaches on a one-time-only basis, in a few months you'll be doing the Ghostbusters thing and saying "They're baaaaa-aaaaack!"
You'll probably find some excellent barbecue.
Realize that even if you choose this move, and are excited about it, there will stilll be things you miss from Ohio (maybe even the snow--I did). It's ok to be homesick for those things.
If you have more questions feel free to email me privately. Good luck!
