Refuses Sippy-cup?

My 11 month old daughter refuses to use a sippy cup. I've tried different brands-put water in it and formula. I started months and months ago! I don't force it but always hand it to her when she eats. She may chew on it for a second and then immediately throws it to the floor. I'm starting to get worried, wondering how am I ever going to ween her off of a bottle (she's been formula fed since 1 month old). It seems that everywhere I read children her age are using one regularly. She's a great eater and doesn't need her bottle to go to sleep-so just looking for a little help w/ this one! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Have you tried a transition type bottle? Wal-mart sells them for less $3 each and they come with two nipples, one like a regular nipple and one that is more like a sippy cup. It's soft like a regular nipple and longer than the spout on a sippy, but otherwise it's shaped like a sippy. The bottle also comes with handles like a sippy cup. My daughter will be 9 months this month and while she won't take a sippy cup yet, she has no problem with that bottle and actually prefers it to her other bottles.

I know it seems like everyone elses kids are doing just fine, but that isn't the case. A lot of people have problems with this, don't panic! I personally didn't have a problem, however, my son is almost two and still won't touch milk unless it is chocolate! I used the nuby sippy cups with the silicon spout. He used these until about 13-14 months old and he was able to switch to the valved cups. The take and toss cups are also really good and he used those too at this age. More importantly, don't worry too much, OK? Some kids just need time! Reading about everyone's perfect children can get very stressful!

My daughter went through the same thing. And I struggled for a couple months doing different things. Here's what finally worked for me. I don't ever give my daughter juice. For me, I don't believe in it. I only give her water. However, to teach her, I put juice in there and then took a sip of it and gave it to her. It worked like a charm! She started drinking from it, I allowed her the juice that day and from then on gave her water. If she ever refuses it today, I take a sip from it first and then give it to her. She wants to "copy me" and drinks from it. My daughter is also 11 months old. Good luck, hope this helps! (Also, I read online to remove the no-spill valve until they get used to drinking from it so that it is easier for them to drink out of)

My little one did not do the sippy cup at all b/c she couldn't get it down that you had to tilt the cup, so we started her on the sippy cups that have the soft straws (Nuby makes one that is easy to suck on)and she loved it. I had no issues getting her off the bottle and she could carry around her cup and drink from it easily without having to invert it. Now, that she is older she is transitioning well to a regular cup, and if we are out to eat it is nice because she knows how to use the straw very well :)

T.,

his happened to me too. with my two older boys i started taking the bottle away from them at about 10-11 months and on their first birthdays i threw all of the bottles away. with my youngest who is not 2 i did the same thing, he absolutley refused to drink from a sippy cup. i was worried like you and all of a sudden about 1 week before his first birthday he picked up the cup, started drinking from it and never wanted another bottle. so just keep offering it to her, she will take it.

You should enitce her to use the sippy cup by putting something sweet in it such as watered down apple juice. You then put only water in her bottle. They pretty quickly realize that if they want the good stuff they have to use the sippy cup. It worked with both my girls, hope it works for you!

My older son--who breastfed until about 16 months and never used a bottle--couldn't figure out how to use a sippy cup for the longest time. So we started him with straw cups. Also, someone else mentioned in another post about the nuby sippy cups. The silicone nipple on those is easier for them to start out with, and they also make a sport bottle that is really similar to a regular bottle. That can also make the transition easier. But really, she's only 11 months. You still have plenty of time. Good luck!

My son did the same thing and he was breastfed. Even to this day, at 2 1/2 years old, he will not use a sippy cup. I tried the straw cups, which look similar to the sippys, but have a pop out straw. There are several types out there, but only the ones that came with a real plastic straw, not the silicon soft kind, would work for him. You can also try a regular cup, but it requires a lot of patience and quite a few messes. Hope this helps!!

i have had the same problem with both my kids. it took my son forever to take one but he still had a bottle up until he was at least 2 for naps and bedtime. my daughter is doing the same thing. i have bought every sippy cup out there and she wants nothing to do with them. she is 13 months. i have given up for the time being. i know they are supposed to be off of them but it is easier said than done. jsut do what you have to do to keep her happy. one day she will get it.

can i ask what type of work you do from home, i have been looking for something to do from home???
thanks.

Does she refuse ALL liquids or just formula? Neither of my kids would drink formula from a sippy cup but would drink juice, water, etc. And neither of them took to the cup easily either. I just tried a little each meal or something. I know it is VERY common for babies to refuse formula or breast milk from cups because they want the comfort source that they know... breast milk (obviously) from the breast and sometimes the substitute bottle (my youngest would NEVER drink breast milk from a bottle but would take formula from a bottle... and would NOT take formula from a cup!) and formula from a bottle. The nipple/sucking action are as important to them as the fluid itself. And I'm guessing you'll be weaning her off formula and onto milk in the next several months anyway. You may be surprised, as I was, how easily they'll suddenly accept the new liquid from the sippy cup and maybe even transition a little easier. Good luck and best wishes!

My 2nd daughter who is 15 month's doesn't like sippy cups either. She will use what I call the old fashion ones from tupperware (I've seen a cheap version at Walmart)they are a cup with a lid with like a spout. You can't let them walk around with it since it is a cup that basically keeps the liquid from spilling wider than thier mouth, NOTHING spill proof about it, I also find she likes the ones with straws and although these do leak through the air hole if laying sideways or upside down, they don't run all over the place.
Good Luck
