Red Wine Stain Removal ~ How Do I Remove the Stain

Updated on January 30, 2008

My husband handed me a glass of red wine tonight that he wanted me to try. As I took the glass, it slipped right thru my fingers and spilled all over the light beigh carpet. I blotted it up the best I could, but what can I use to get the stain out? The only thing I had was a stain remover called Lloyd's. It did take out the red color, but a dark grayish color remains. I hope it's not too late to try anything else. Anyone have any ideas what works?

What can I do next?

Restore Enz-Away!
It's a Minneapolis Mom-based company and you can get it at Cub or Whole Foods (and a bunch of other places) It is amazing!

We bought a house over 5 years ago with a strange grey stain on the white dining room (duh!) carpet. Everything I tried made it worse, bigger, darker, just worse. Found this stuff a few months ago, and I'm the only one who knows where the spot is now.

Contact the Travelling Vineyard. If you need a contact, I could dig one up if you email me back. (I'm not a wine drinker, so I tend to delete them when I get them, but I still get them frequently.)

Cheri,
I has success removing red wine and and entire class of bloody mary with a product called Sol-U-Mel. It is sold through Melaleuca as a part of there Ecosense line. They sell hundreds of safe, effective, affordable, and convenient household products on line and through independent marketing executives (like me). Good Luck!

I haven't experienced the red wine stain, but Nature's Miracle (available at pet stores) got out baby poop (nursed baby) from my white carpet. Nothing else worked!

My mom used to sell Mary Kay and we used the Clear Makeup Remover Liquid to take Spaghetti Sauce out of the carpet. It works on koolaid too - and the carpet was beige apartment-quality carpet in a rental. I suggest using this, and if you don't have any - check around your friends/family to see if you can borrow a bottle! Good Luck!

My aunt always swears by white wine. Somehow that neutralizes the colour. Now that has worked for me once before but I attacked it immediately. I'm not sure whether that will work a day or so later.

We have beige carpet downstairs and my oldest son accidentally opened the bedroom door into my middle son's nose. There was a BIG spot of blood on the carpet. We soaked it up the best we could, and I put hydrogen peroxide on it a few days later and blotted it up and it came out!

They actually have a product out there called Wine Away.
I can help you get some if you would like. I know it is sold in a store somewhere but I totally forgot where, however I do sell it myself for $5.00

I must admit, "Spot Shot" (I get it at Costco), is the best carpet cleaner! It removed dried red acrylic paint from our white carpet and has lifted red wine as well. Just remember, don't rub!, blot! and keep working it, it takes a couple of rounds of spraying and blotting.

I've used salt to get red wine out of a white shirt. One reason it seemed to work so well was working it from the back to the front (rather than scrubbing it further into the fabric) and you can't really do that with carpet, but that's the first thing I would try.

I have only dealt with fresh red wine stains. When they are fresh, pour on salt and then club soda. Blot up and the wine is gone.

Wine away. Do a Google search for stores that sell it.
If it were on a garment I'd say do the boiling water, but on carpet that would be too much water. You can also try club soda.

I've had great luck using Oxyclean on tough stains. You just have to be careful of the fumes if you are sensitive to that sort of things.

I'm not sure if it will work now, but I have used club soda and salt before and it worked very well. Wet the area with club soda andthen spread salt on it to life the stain. Once the salt is all wet and matted, vaccuum it up.

Hope this helps
