We love both! Check the snow reports. Nothing wrong with skiing Ruidoso, but it is further south and your enjoyment will depend on whether or not they've had a good amount of snowfall. Last year was a FABULOUS year there.
I was wondering if anyone has skiied at either of these places. We have young kiddos and want to take them skiing. We are driving from Austin. Is one place better?Prettier? More inexpesive..than the other. Is one place better for kids? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think Red River would be so much easier with kiddos. They have lifts that go down into the town so it is virtually "Ski in-Ski out." With Ski Apache, you will have to load the whole family up and drive up a narrow winding road up the mountain. Traffic is one way according to the time of day. I love skiing Ski Apache, it is virtually in our backyard. However, I really think Red River will be more accomodating. My family wants to go skiing over the holidays. I dreaded the thought until you reminded me of Red River. Mine are 2 and 5. Have a great trip!
I definitely recommend Red River. The skiing is better and more convenient. The town is a little smaller. If you stay at (i think this is the name) Alpine Lodge, you can ski in and ski out which is WAAAAY more convenient. To be fair, I have never skiied in Ruidoso, just visited the ski resort in the summer, but my parents have been both places (Red River several times), and my dad is not a big fan of the skiing in Ruidoso.
I like them both! I think Red River is my favorite of the two. We like doing one day there and one day at the Enchanted Forest cross-country ski area that is next to it. But both are nice...you can't really go wrong with either.
Red river is far prettier than Ruidoso. We are going to Taos this year. There is more to do in RR and the surrounding area in case the skiing does not go well!! LOL
