Hi All,

I am pregnant with twins set to deliver June 2010. We are currently looking for an OB-GYN and a hospital. I have met with Dr. Kells who is affiliated with Chandler Regional and will be meeting with Dr. Hazelrigg who is affiliated with Banner Desert. Dr. Kells and Chandler Regional are really close to where I live, but I keep hearing Banner Desert is great and better and I've gotten some rave recs for Dr. Hazelrigg. I am interested in feedback from others who have had these docs and/or delivered at these hospitals and/or recs for other docs/hospitals. Also, do you think it would be better to be within 5-10 minutes of your doc/hospital or is it okay to be within 20 minutes with no traffic, 30 minutes with traffic?

Thanks.

What can I do next?

My daughter had twin boys in June. She want to Dr. Eric Huish and he was amazing. He specializes in high risk and multiples. She had both boys vaginally, one was breach and all in only 15 minutes. He delivers out of Banner Gateway. The staff was awesome there. She had a great experience.

A., Congrats on the twins! What a blessing. I encourage you to look into delivering at Banner Desert simply because they are better equiped to handle a premature or sick infant. I'm sure Chandler Regional is a fine hospital, but if your babies need special care after birth, they will be transferred to a hospital with a better equipped NICU (neonatal intensive care unit)and often you must stay behind until you are ready to be released. I have had Hazelrigg as my Dr for 3 years before I had my babies and he was terrific. I have delivered 2 babies at Banner Desert and had great experiences both times and I'm looking forward to delivering there again in a couple months. I think the nursing staff is great and love my OB/Gyn practice, Contemporary CAre for Women (www.careforwomen.net). Best wishes. Just thought I'd let you know that I've heard great things about both docs! Dr. Kells has a great reputation for being open to natural birth, and he also has an awesome midwife in his office (Janice Bovee). A friend of mine goes with Dr. Hazelrigg and adores him. Blessings!

I delivered at Banner Desert because of their NICU. I didn't have a high risk pregnancy but after my niece had a seizure hours after birth I just felt so much more at ease knowing it was there just in case. I saw Dr. Linnerson at Contemporary Care for women who was amazing. He does a lot of high risk pregnancies and was delivering twins the morning I went into delivery. Good Luck with your decision.

I had my twins (almost 7 years ago...hard to believe) at Banner Desert and Dr Steven Linnerson delivered. It was so good! I had them both vaginally and all went well. No complications! Would recommend both. The room I had after the delivery was huge to accomidate both of the babies as well as all the family!

Looks like you have mixed reviews. My last two children Dr. Kells delivered and he was great. He was set to go on vacation with one, and delayed it to finish out my delivery. Anyway, he was at Desert Sam at the time across from Mesa Community College. He is still my ob gyn. So far,
I haven't had any problems with him. He is very personable and makes you feel at ease. My middle child he joked with me not to ruin his new shoes, and guess what a big gush came out (we thought my water broke, but it hadn't) and I'm sure his shoes were not such a pretty sight anymore. I think it's better to be closer, but that's just my own experience, we were more than a 15 minute drive at the time, and it worked out for us.

Take care and God Bless your decision and your delivery,
K.

Having twins I would suggest Banner Desert. They have a NICU and if for some reason they come early you don't want to be separated from them and unable to visit until you are released from the hospital. As far as a 30 minute drive you will only make it once or twice so I don't think it is a big deal. I live in S. Chandler and delivered at Banner Desert and there was no distance issue at all. Good luck!

I delivered with Dr. Kells! I refer everyone to him. I was a high risk preg. and I had the best experience with him. I was in labor for 22 hours. And he was by my side thru the day and delivered me. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM! I tell all me friends and family to go with him and they also have had the best experience with him. The Chandler Reg has newer facilities, they were updating when I delivered. Stay proactive and don't be affraid to ask questions, Dr. Kells is respectful and has the expereince that will amaze you. Stick with him!

I interviewed a few OB/GYNs and Dr. Hazelrigg was my pick. (I don't know about Dr. Kells) I had Dr. Hazelrigg for both of my pregnancies, both at Banner Desert. As for Dr. Hazelrigg, he is great. He is very nice and explains everything. I was very big on having a birth plan, going natural (but keeping my option to medication open!), etc. And he was very respectiful and talked through all my options. He is still my GYN. Banner Desert is great. They have redone their rooms and really are great. I think you can do a virtual tour online. But more importantly, the nurses are GREAT. The doctors come and go through your labor process but the nurses are there the whole time and really are your life line. My second came so fast, the head nurse actually delivered her and Dr. Hazelrigg got there in time to deliver ... the placenta! :) So they are very knowledgeable and capable to handle all situations. With that birth I did go natural and the nurses encouraged me and helped me get through labor and transition without medication but told me that if I ever changed my mind, they would get the epidural going. It was comforting to know they were willing to do what I wanted and not just the easiest thing for them. So I highly recommend Dr. H and Banner Desert. Good luck and Best Wishes with the twins.

I know that multiples from around the nation are delivered at Banner Good Sam. It is an amazing hospital. If you want to stay in the east valley I would say Banner Desert. I would recommend sticking with a large hospital. I don't know about personal experience with multiples, but there are several twin moms on Arizona Moms Like Me - you may want to pose this question there. phoenix.momslikeme.com

I too would strongly recommend Banner Desert for twins as they have a Level III NICU. I chose that with my second only because my first child had so many complications and required a long NICU stay. So, it is just better to be safe. I'm sure they will be fine, but it is just so much better for babies to already be where they need to be rather than airlifted. Also, I would recommend looking up an OB's record when you are choosing one. I might get backlash on here, but I researched Dr. Hazelrigg and he was one of my top three that I scheduled interviews with when I was choosing an OB. I canceled my interview after what I found. It might have been an isolated incident, but I just wasn't willing to take the chance. So, just do your research (it's free with the AMA). You can see if any doctors have had malpractice suits or have had their license suspended for anything. Congratulations and good luck with your decision!! :)

Hi, I had my twins at Banner Baywood. I had picked an OB that was affiliated with that hospital before I knew I was having twins, so when we found out, they said as long as my pregnancy and labor went well I could deliver there and if there was any reason the babies needed NICU time( which they dont have at banner baywood) they would transfer us to Banner Desert. Overall we had a very good experience, but if your choosing between banner desert and Chandler, go with banner desert, they have many multiple deliveries and are set up with a NICU.. GOOD LUCK!!!
