As the former owner of a doggy daycare and overnight care facility I HIGHLY recommend that you visit each and every possible boarding facility and make sure first hand that it is a place that you would like you pet to stay. You can first start with checking their websites and calling them to get a feel as to whether it is a match, then visit for a tour and personal meet-greet with the staff that will be caring for your pet. Although some facilities may be great, the staff isn't and vice versa. Alot of facilities use alot of young 'come-and-go' staff for the summer, some are great, others not so much. You need dedicated, caring staff...not those just doing their job as quickly as possible. You will know if you feel comfortable when you visit and talk to them. Ask the important questions like how often they go out, where will they be let out (short tie-out vs an hour free run in a fenced yard?), how many staff are there and how many pets, what is their procedure if a pet gets sick (removed from general boarding area?), how big are the areas to spend their time, can you bring your own pets belongings and food, what is their emergency procedures for serious injury/illness, evacuation plans, does it look and SMELL clean (not like strong bleach!), and anything else that is important to you... Price is not always a good indication of the care they will receive.....
At my facility we required that dogs visited 3 times within a 30 day period just for day visits prior to overnighting. This way the staff got to know the pets and the dogs became very comfortable with the facility and staff, and being there without mom and dad. Dogs did AMAZING...very little stress and anxiety, which means less sickness and diarhea and the dogs would eat and play well. It was wonderful.
Having your pet come home sick is no fun for them or you... and being away from you, no matter how great the facility will always cause at least a little stress, so finding a place you think they will be the most happy, relaxed and comfortable, along with great care and cleanliness should help minimoze the chances.....
Check out the ABKA website for more info on finding the right facility for your pet....
Good Luck!
