Recommendations for Las Vegas

I am considering taking my husband on a weekend getaway to Las Vegas to celebrate our anniversary. Neither of us have ever been there, though, and thus I am looking for information on places to stay (or places to avoid!), tours, and things to do (ie. tours, shows, etc.). We will definitely be on a budget and thus if any of you have information on great websites to obtain discount hotel/airfare, that would be appreciated as well...we aren't wanting to utilize a travel agency.
Thanks so much!

My hubby and I are looking at going to Vegas soon. SW is having a killer sale right now that is friends fly and stay free with prices as low as $55. I did some checking into that and airfare cost more than if you package air and hotel together. Great deals right now. But something that is a bit of a deal breaker for some is that you can only fly M-Th & Sat. If you can stay on the strip, do that, but if you stay downtown, you can take the trolley to the strip pretty cheap. Staying downtown is typically cheaper and the games seem to pay out better down there, especially the slots. If you do stay on the strip, you've got to go downtown at night and see the Freidmont Experience. It's great.

Even if you aren't a gambler, there is still a ton of stuff to do in Vegas, but I agree with the other poster, don't stay in Circus Circus if you want a romantic get away. Have fun!

My husband and I just booked a Vegas vacation. We try to go at least once a year. I would highly recommend staying on the strip. Rates are really good right now through SW Airlines if you don't mind changing planes or you can get a package through US Airway Vacations online for a reasonable price. You don't have to stay at a super fancy hotel in Vegas to have a good time. If you stay in a middle of the road hotel like Harrahs or Flamingo Hilton then you are right in the middle of the action. We are staying at the Mirage this time because we got such a good deal. It is also a good idea to go to the hotel website and sign up for email deals. I get a great offer weekly via email. Last bit of advice for Vegas is entertainment. There are a ton of free things to do in Vegas. The hotels have free exhibits to draw you into their casinos: Fountain show at Bellagio, Gardens at Bellagio, Tigers at Mirage, Volcano at Mirage, Pirate show at Treasure Island, Ceasar Statues at Ceasar's Palace and the Freedmont Experience (Light Show) in downtown Vegas. Also, you can take a tour or rent a car for a day to see the Hoover Dam. Very cool!

I def recommend flying SW their tickets are very cheap right now (my daughter and i are flying to WDW in 3 week and round trip together is $280, tickets, fees etc)

Now I recommend checking Travelzoo.com they search over 1000 sites for the best deal. Check out these three Las Vegas deals.

We were there this past March for a conference. We stayed at the JW Marriott resort which was about 20 minutes from the strip. The resort was awesome.... I had spa day there with massage and the works and it was one of the best I've had. We didn't worry about a car because they had limo service for us to the strip nightly for shows and dinner.

We are not gamblers so we are not that interested in the casinos, per say. I hate the cigarette smoke in the casinos.

We've also been on the strip and there's ton of things to do even if you don't gamble. I agree with other posters....NO CIRCUS CIRCUS

The Venetian, Mandalay, Caesars are all wonderful. We had daughter with us once and she loved the aquarium at Mandalay, the dolphins at Mirage and the fountains at Belliago are wonderful. Go to Hoover Dam, the new bridge they are building is a sight to see.

Southwest is having great deals right now. Usually we fly American and they are having deals as well.

I was perfectly fine with just walking around ( I like to walk a lot) seeing the sites and going through the hotels. Shopping at Caesars was great.

Enjoy!!

I got married a few years ago in the Grand Canyon, but our hotels, entertainment, dinners, etc were all in Vegas and we loved it. I used Vegas.com to get loads of information and to plan an intinerary for my family/friends that came along. I think one of the first things to do when trying to plan a trip in a place like this (the Disneyworld for adults) is to decide if you want to be romantic, have a big laugh, just be tourists, do something adventurous, reinvent yourselves for that weekend, etc. That will help narrow things down for you.
One of the fun things I loved doing was just running in and out of the major hotels on the strip and seeing what their "personality" was about-I wouldn't want to stay at Circus Circus or Excalibur (more family oriented) but worth looking at just the same. We stayed at the Luxor because the price was ridiculously low for how nice it was ($59/night on an off season night, and you can't even stay at some chain hotel here for that price!)If you go to vegas.com you can click on the tab that says "vegas guide", then on the right column under "occassions" you can click "anniversary" and it will give you some neat ideas. You can spend a lot of time just running from casino to casino (hit the huge ones to check out the amazing decor) or take a tour if you can to somewhere like the Grand Canyon (you can fly out there, or do that new sky walk that sounds crazy) or we also did a photo tour with the family/friends in a stretch SUV where they took us to a bunch of must-see spots for cool photo opportunities. See if there's a show you'd really like to see going on at the time you are planning to go. Really, the sky is the limit as far as what you could do for entertainment. You could renew your vows at some chintzy Vegas chapel for a laugh, since you've already had a "real" wedding. Do you or your husband have a big thing for something like Star Trek, Star Wars, etc? There's plenty to do/see, but that website is the best one I've found for looking for package deals, ideas, tours, etc. Have fun.

If you are looking for any sort of romance, do not stay at Circus Circus. Some friends did this and it was a bit of a nightmare...it was full of kids and families running the halls and screaming (which is perfect if you are traveling with your kids). It was a bit of a romance killer for them.
