Hi all,
I need to get a breast pump because I will return to working full time after maternity leave. I don't know anything about pumps, but I do know some of the things I need. I do want something portable because I will have to bring it to work. I would like something hands free and quick (double pump). Any suggestions would be helpful!

J.-
I absolutely love the Medela Freestyle. It's a little more expensive than the different Pump in Style models, but it's so worth it. I have actually walked around the house, prepared my lunch, and done other stuff while I'm pumping. This is only possible because the motor is so tiny and isn't part of some huge bag. I love, love, love my FreeStyle!

Ameda Purely Yours double pump is nice! Where do you live? My friend owns a maternity/nursing boutique in Poughkeepsie, NY. She sells pumps and is also certified lactation consultant. Good luck!

I am a teacher too! I pumped all last year with the Medela Pump in Style. It's a double breast pump. I had the purse style bag but it also comes in a backpack style bag. I also had the medela hands-free pumping bra that I got at BuyBuyBaby. They also have a website. The Pump in Style is a double pump and the bra makes it hands-free so you can grade papers or whatnot. I pumped twice a day and it only took about 15 mins. each time. The Medela pump also has an included battery pack for times when you may not be near electricity (it happened a few times that I had to pump in my car). It is more expensive than some of the other pumps, but WELL WORTH IT. Our hospital lactation consultant recommended it. My friend, who is also a teacher, has it and has had much success too! You also may find that you need to buy bigger breast shields than the ones that come with it. I had to get the next size up. Best of luck to you! You can do it! I highly recommend the Medela and the bra!

medela pump in style... costly but there is no messing around if you need a good pump, and especially as a teacher where you will surely need it to work well and quickly. mine blew away the pump they gave me in the hospital when my 2nd was in the nicu, i used theirs twice and had hubby bring me my medela, no comparison. for a hand pump i used the advent isis, definitely a learning curve and i have none other to compare it to, but it worked fine and a handpump is great to have for travel, sickness, quickies in awkward places, and if you get a clog to use it in a hot shower, works like a charm. oh... and congrats!!

Hello!
When I was nursing, I used the Medella pump. I brought it to work with me and was able to pump quickly. It is very quiet, and very comfortable to use. I have since loaned it to my SIL, so I'm not quite sure which make & model it is.

Also, since electronic pumps are quite costly, another option is to rent the device from your hospital.

Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby this fall!! Best of luck to you!

i highly recommend the medela pump in style...it's more expensive but VERY worth it for working moms !!! (Get on Buy Buy Baby's mailing list - and then send out 20% off coupons every few months!) It usually took me 10 mins or less to pump at work. In order to make it hands free so that i could still do paperwork while pumping - I purchased the Easy Expression Bustier from amazon. Pumping was a breeze !!! GOOD LUCK !

I got the Evenflo dual one (and never used it for both at the same time ironically) --it was cheaper than some of the others but worked well. It also comes w/a detachable thermos bag w/ice pack, 4 bottles, etc. I used it to nurse 2 children and when my first one had a problem, Evenflo sent me another right away.

As a breastfeeding counselor, I have always recommended Medela. However, a new pump is on the market called Hygeia which the lactation consultants around here are raving about. Its less expensive than medela and you can resell it...its marketed for multiple users, while medela is not. Check their website.

Rent a hospital grade pump like the Medela Symphony. That's what I used. Its fairly small in size, heavier than the cheaper ones but still ok to carry. I suggest this because the quality is a million times better, easier on the breasts (trust me on that) and it's sooo quiet. You'll need that for privacy at work. The medela pump-in-style was SO loud and harsh on the breast. Best of luck to you oh yeah, you'll get more milk in a shorter time with the symphony.

I used Medela and they make many versions (single, double, etc). They are all portable, and come in travel packs. http://www.medela.us/ As for hands free, I used the Easy Expressions products. They look a little crazy but really did the job. I was able to close the door in my office, use the computer, take phone calls, etc. witout missing a beat. http://www.easyexpressionproducts.com/
On another note, I used the Adiri bottles while I nursed. My daughter had no issues going from the breast in the evenings to the Adiri bottles during the day while I was away from her. http://www.adiri.com/ Hope this helps. Good luck with everything and congrats on the pending arrival!

Ameda Purely Yours. Forget the Medela version, it's almost twice as expensive and not necessary. The Ameda works great. I had to pump exclusively for the first two weeks. I went back to work when she was 8 weeks and pumped multiple times a day until she was four months. The pump worked wonderfully. I believe I ordered mine from happymothers.com. I looked online and found a coupon with a 10 or 15% percent discount plus freeshipping. It was great.

Hi J.,
I am a teacher also who recently had a daughter named J.! It's a great name, I'm sure u love it too! Anyway, I also used medela double pump in style that I got at buy buy baby. I'll sell you mine for much less than what you can buy it at the stores. I had to stop breast feeding as I was not producing. I had the same problem when I had my son, whose now four. So for me, it was ok to give it up. Anyway,if you are interested please let me know. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!
