I use a bread knife as well. The trick is not to rush.
I like to make my own bread...however, what I find is that I can't cut the slices evenly so I end up wasting a lot of bread...
can you tell me what bread slicer you use for slicing your home baked bread?
Thanks!
Edit - I have searched ebay and other sites...there are a ton of selections...looking for one that is simple to use (in case my boys want to slice their bread) and doesn't cost a fortune!

I have one I got at Bed Bath and Beyond. It's basically just a 3 sided box with bottom to catch crumbs. 2 of the walls have grooves in the side to guide your knife. I dont remember exactly how much I paid for it but it was under $20 I think. The slices come out just under an inch or so. If I want them thinner, I just pull the loaf out a little and they come out fine.
Hi cheryl-
I'd loan ya pete...and my cutting board and bread knife...but we are a little far!!
I used to have that problem...but now I make my crust 'crustier' with a pan of water in with the pre heat...and spritzing the bread a few times during baking...
My guys like a 'tougher' crust...and once completely cooled...slices nicely...even if pete is not available to slice!!
Best luck!

I have no idea who makes it but at a tag sale we saw a thing you put over your bread and you slice following the gaps....best 50 cents Ive spent in a long time. I'll do some googling later and see if I can find one similar.
I have never used a bread slicer, but sliced loads and loaves of bread :-)
Use a big good/sharp (serrated) knife and a cutting board. Make sure the bread has cooled completely. If it is warm or too soft, try dipping your knife in water before cutting each slice.

Joy has good advice. Use a serrated knife. I do and I use it also on anything else soft that needs slicing like tomatoes, anglefood cake, soft cheese is a breeze. Mine came with the set I bought years ago and it is still sharp and sliced like a champ.
With practice you can get an even slice with a good bread knife. Even with a bread slicing guide set up you need a good knife that is specially made for bread. The cutting edge is scalloped so that it cuts thru the bread without smashing it.
