Hi, Everyone!

I am seeking some new recipes for my son's special diet. He has sensory processing disorder and I have put him on a dairy, gluten, whey, and casin free diet. I have had him on the diet for about 4 month, but the other piece is that he has just started eating table food regularly. My son is 18 months old and has some difficulties eating that is why he is still on some baby food. If you can please help! You would be surprised how many items have gluten in them.

What can I do next?

I'm a certified occupational therapy assistant and work with kids with autsim and sensory processing disorders. A lot of the families I work with are starting the GF/CF diet, and I have heard a lot of them recommend the books Special Diets for Special Kids. It has GF/CF recipes as well as recipes for those with other food allergies.

Not sure it is directly on point but you might take a look at the book Food Chaining by Mark Fishbein and others. My son doesn't have gluten etc. restrictions but it has helped us manage his other eating issues. It might give you some ideas.

I'm not sure where you live, but there is a large grocery store right over the Wisconsin border called Woodman's and they have a very large section of gluten free food choices including bread, cereals and snacks. I love this this store, they also carry a large selection of organic products. And no sales tax on food in Wisconsin!!

Hi -

I don't cook gluten free but I noticed there is a newer store in Westchester that is all gluten free products. It's on Mannheim near Cermak. I am sure they would be a great resource.

I became aware of my own gluten intolerance just 5 years ago.
I recommend books by Carol Fenster. I use her flour substitution blend for a lot of other foods.

Also, check out the Yahoo Group Foodlab. It's a large group of people dealing with various food intolerances and allergies and there's a lot of recipe sharing and discussion.

People who can't eat gluten have Celiac Disease - you may want to check out some of the Celiac Disease resources. They provide information about where to get gluten-free foods.

Hi A.,

My 16m old daughter and I follow a GF/CF and soy-free diet and I have tons of info on where you can locate these types of items. I also have a list of Chicago-area restaurants that offer GF menus. Feel free to email me personally with your email address and I can send them to you along with a few recipes that I have used, including my new breakfast cookies!

You can start with www.glutenfreemall.com to located items, but you can find some of these cheaper in a health food store too.

We follow the diet for health reasons.

There is a woman who has been doing one crock pot recipe daily this year. Her family is CF/GF - so she gives you recipes including how to use the standard recipes in this way.

My four year old daughter is on the AS, and i've elected to put her on the CF/GF diet. I have a lot of cool cookie and bread recipes, but your son may not be that adventurous yet:^)

My recs are to keep it simple. Plain foods like fruit, veggies, rice, chicken are good. There are also a lot of soy and rice milks in different flavors that your son might like - be warned that some have barley malt, though, so read your labels. The health food stores have a lot of GF, vegan cereals, crackers and cookies too - they're expensive, but if your kid is the only one in the house who gets to eat them, they won't go as quickly:^)

Good luck!

Amy,

My son has a lot of food allergies and I just found this great cookbook:

Dairy-Free, Egg Free Kid Pleasing Recipes & Tips by Theresa Kingma. It may not be Gluten Free, but you can tailor the recipes to your needs.

I hope this helps.

First, good for you for handling your son's sensory processing disorder naturally!

I have food sensitivities and I shop at a health food store. Their products are guaranteed to be gluten free. The person who works there will be able to help you a lot! I bought some really good hot cereal that's gluten-free plus cookie mixes, etc.

I usually substitute soy milk or rice milk for all milk products. There isn't a cheese product out there that doesn't have whey in it :( Even soy cheese has casein in it.

I'll glance through my recipies. I do a dairy, whey and casien free diet so I'll see what I have.
