I've never experienced a miscarriage however a recent family memeber just got married and just found out she had a miscarriage and is flying tomorrow for her honeymoon. She is still cramping and has her prescription to flush out the fetus. How long will this cramping be for and how painful will this be? Should she fly over 8 hours while in this condition?

I'm sorry to hear of this loss. I had a miscarriage very early at 5-6 weeks basically determined by blood tests of falling HCG levels. I never had any perscription and basically just got my period. My understanding is that the embryo, if there was truly a pregnancy, reabsorbs and you get your period. Since the doctor seems to feel thae she needs medication I am wondering if something else is going on I'm missing?? Sorry I can't be of more help, but I would almost believe that taking the medication would cause worse cramping etc than not taking it and lettign nature take it's course. At any rate, she needs to ask the doctor or speak to an office nurse. That's what they are there for. Also a pharmacist might be able to give some info. Call the pharmacy you use.

DETAILS on the situation:
My sister-in-law received a blood test confirmation of a miscarriage this morning.

She was at 6 weeks and she is supposed to head out for her honeymoon in less than 24 hours.

She is already experiencing painful cramping but she has not started bleeding yet.

Her doctor told her to wait until they arrive at their honeymoon destination before taking the medication to induce uteral discharge.

They are worried about sitting on an 8-hour flight since there is always a chance for complications and there is very little reading material on the chance of complications or how long women tend to bleed before passing the tissue.

Does anyone have any first-hand experiences or advice or an adamant stance/reasoning on whether or not to take the 8 hour flight?

for serious and true, she should wait.
for her own sake and that of the other passengers who could easily be captive witness to a potentially miserable experience.
and for the sake of her honeymoon which ought to be joyous.
tell her to stay home.
i miscarried early and didn't need anything to flush the fetus, and i was down with pain and depression for several days. i can't imagine making an 8-hour flight under those circumstances.

i dont know anything about miscarriages myself, but i have
set with a long time friend while she miscarried a much wanted pregnancy..however, this young woman should not be
on an airplane, knowing that she could miscarry at any time, there are too many things that could go wrong, like if the fetus doesnt expel its itself COMPLETELY, she will need need an emergency D AND C RIGHT THEN, otherwise, blood poisoning will set in very fast and she could die enroute plus, i cant even imagine how horrorifying it would be for her fellow passengers to see/hear her miscarry while on the plane. plus there is the potential legal issues involving the airline , not to mention the
cost of cleaning up the mess.

I am not sure my message will get to you on time. If the lady could delay her flight and deal with her miscarriage, in my opinion it would be better. I had a miscariage spring of 2008 and was given probably the same medecine. It was so painful. At first, I had a little lady helping me at home, when I took the pill and all was fine. It was 12 when I took the pill. She left me with my son by ourselves at 4 and all was still fine. By 4h30 or 4h45, I had to call my husband to come home urgently, I was lying on the floor in pain - it was so painful and I was bleeding buckets. It is a bit of a scary moment, and would definitly not want to be on a plane to endure this, it would be too hard. It lasted overnight, if I recall properly. Then was ok a day or so later, just felt tired and sad...

If she is going to take the medicine and wants to fly soon after she should get medical advice first.I took this medicine and it causes uterine contractions to "flush the fetus from the uterus. The cramps can be painful.I was back and forth to the bathroom a lot, and passing the tissue is not pleasant...I can't imagine doing it on a plane. You have to be very careful that you don't hemorrhage, as heavy bleeding is a side effect of the tissue being pulled away from the uterus.I was given 3 options...taking the medicine and passing the fetus at home, having a d/c in the hospital or waiting for nature to take it's course which I was told could take 3 weeks..if nothing happened then I would have to have a d/c. There are still some doctors that feel the medicine at home is unsafe because if all of the tissue is not passed the uterus cannot fully contract together and stop the bleeding and it can be very dangerous. My cousin asked to use the medicine and her gyno refused. She should get the okay from her doctor before she id ten thousand feet in the air with a big problem and no place for adequate medical treatment!!!
