Reasonably Priced Hotel in Southern Fla?

We are near Tampa, and want to take a trip in December somewhere in southern Florida. We aren't set on a location because we are so unfamiliar. We want to go somewhere where it will still be nice enough to enjoy a beach, possibly swim in a pool.
Every hotel I seemed to run across were really pricey. $300 a night and up. We are open to places. I searched Naples, West Palm Beach, Seaside, Sanibel. We'd like a hotel on the beach or at least across the street. We don't need fancy. Just clean! And I like towns where you can walk around to shops and restaurants etc. Maybe a trip like this is out of reach if we don't want to spend that kind of money...??
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it!! Cocoa Beach was reasonably priced, but last year in November it was mid 70's. Not warm enough to get in any water unless it was heated.

What can I do next?

I don't know pricing but we stayed at the Hilton Resort at Marco Island and had a great time. The Marriott resort looked very nice as well.

I suppose it depends on the time of year. Check out the hotel website directly and sometimes you get a good deal.

Prices will be high because that's the season. Try Ft. Myers instead of Sanibel...try Deerfield Beach or Delray Beach instead of Palm Beach or Boca Raton.

You might check vrbo.com. It's a website where people who own vacation homes rent them out when they are not using them. The prices can be better that a hotel and you get a kitchen which can also help you save $ on food.

Our favorite place is the Hampton Inn on Key Largo. Definitely warm enough to swim. Manatees migrate in for the winter. It's a wonderful oasis. It's back area is called manatee bay. You can fish there as well and boats often dock there for a land night. The sunsets are incredible.

Makes me want to go!

Blessings!
