ok here it goes! My husband and I are ttc. I have been off the pill for a little over a year. Last March my brother was murdered. After that, I didn't get my period for 3 months. After seeing a doctor, she figured it was probably the stress but ran tests anyway. She thought "it seemed like" I have PCOS. She put me on Metformin which I stayed on for a little over 3 months. I felt horrible and it wasn't helping. From what I read about PCOS, my gut said that it wasn't it. I still wasn't getting my period on my own. So I went to another doctor. She didn't think I had PCOS and has since stopped the metformin and started me on Clomid. I guess I am asking for advice. Has anyone had a similar experience. How long were should I expect to be on Clomid before it "should" work?

What can I do next?

J.,

unfortunately many of us have been through this. if you are anywhere near long island, i highly recommend dr. kreiner and associates at east coast fertility!!!!! in my department at work alone, his office has produced 10 babies between 7 ladies (3 sets of twins, all other single births). each of us sought them out for different reasons and had different pathologies. for myself, i did 2 rounds of intrauterine insemination with clomid. both worked, i miscarried the first at ~7weeks. the staff there is so professional and so kind, as well as optimistic. i keep the phone # in my cell phone for when i'm ready to try again. their 'claim to fame' for lack of a better phrase is to have the highest success rate with the fewest # of multiple births. let me know if you want more info.

Hi J.,
I have PCOS and it's so frustrating. My husband and I tried for about 18 months, then it happened and we were blessed with our little girl. When she turned 15 months we decided to try again and have been unsuccessful, in March it will be one full year of trying for #2). I've tried Clomid at 50 mgs for 2 months then at 100mg for one month and although I was supposed to try the Clomid for a little bit longer, I decided to stop; for reasons I can't really explain, I just felt it wasn't right for me. But a friend of mine took Clomid at 100mgs and both times it work almost after 2 months. I guess I'm trying to say, I think it's different for each person. I know how frustrating it can be TTC. Good luck with everything and please keep us posted.

Hi J.!! I'm truly sorry for your loss of your brother!!

I have recently heard about chiropractic therapy to help conceive!! Your spinal column affects all of your organs and if there is a misalignment, it may be preventing you from conceiving!! I heard this really works!!

I'd like to recommend a female neurological chiropractor named Keri Chiappino. She's located in Smithtown NY. ###-###-####. I know she treats this condition and has had success! Check out the website .....

Some women who have had fertility issues for over a year end up having a fertility workup done and that might include having surgery to see if you have endometriosis. Please see http://www.endocenter.org for more details on endometriosis (endo for short). You might have all of the symptoms or just a few of them.

I know about endo as well since I have been diagnosed with it for 8 years now and the only way to diagnose endo is through surgery. Your best bet to get pregnant afterwards (if endo is your problem) is having excision surgery with a well known endo specialist(there are only a handful in the country).

Also has your husband had a fertility workup as well? If not, I would advise having it done just to make sure that the problem isn't just the fact that you aren't having periods.

Good luck!!

Jen

Hi J.!
I know that trying to conceive can be very difficult and emotionally draining. I have a reproductive anomoly called uterus didelphus...I have 2 uteri! I am a freak of nature! LOL!

But on a lighter note, I can help make your conceiving experience with your husband be more fun again...because I know it can be very stressful. You should try to have fun with sex again and let nature take it's course. I sell sensual oils, lotions, creams, lingerie, and adult toys. You can even have a passion party in the privacy of your own home...give me a buzz! Good luck and I will pray to the fertility Goddess for you! :)

Have faith.
My story is a little different. I have endomitriosis and was told at the ripe age of 19 that I would never have my own children. I have 2 ectopics that ruined both of my tubes. I was so sad. It took years to deal with.

Then, I was 29 and feeling ill and couldn't shake it. I realized that my period was late. I went to the doctor and he confirmed with an ultrasound, that I was pregnant. I have a 10 month old daughter who is the light in my life now.

But, I went for 10 years thinking that I would never have my own. When I tell this story now, there is ALWAYS a response from someone about themselves or someone they know having a similar experience.

Very often, those who are told they have issues and fertility problems WILL have children. Patience, time, and faith in your body will bring about your child.

My thoughts are with you.

Not sure if you are working with a fartelity specialist or not. My suggestion would be to skip this process with the regular OBGYN, go straight to the specialist. I do have PCOS, but yours doesn't sound like it since it's a recent problem. I have never gotten my periods on my own, very rarely do I get them at all. In any case, my point is go to the specialist. I worked with RMA of NJ and they were great. i have a 2 yr old son now, and hoping to have more.

First, so sorry for what you are going through, my heart goes out to you. I feel like a fertility "pro" after 7 months on clomid and doing inseminations, two full series invetro and one cryo cycle. Before I turned to science I did chakra, reiki, accupuncture and chiropractic care to see if I could "fix" things naturally. Unexplained infertility is hard to choke down, but without getting your period, you may not have fertility issues at all, it may be stress with all that is going on. The body is an amazing thing and mind/body connections are fragile, have you considered therapy to help with the trauma you have endured? If that isn't an option, maybe to consider yoga for fertility, I believe it really helps. Just taking time for yourself and the breathing exercises that help to find inner peace are amazing. I finally had success and have a 13 month old, so it does work, but I believe you have to be in the right place mentally before the body is "ready" for a baby. As for the clomid, my OBGYN would only do 6 months of clomid in tandem with the HCG injection. In the end we used http://www.longislandivf.com but maybe some info on the website will help you to know more about your options should you have fertility issues. DON'T GIVE UP! Positive thinking and being in a good place mentally will work for you!

Oh...I was there! I can remember the emotional pain each month I didn't get pregnant. My situation was different - I did menstruate regularly, but I'm in my mid thirties, and my fertility just wasn't as high anymore. I'm not sure if you are going through a fertility doctor - but I highly recommend it. My friend went on Clomid through an her Gyn - but they don't monitor your cylcle like a fertility doctor will. As it turned out with her - Clomid thinned her lining too much - so it wasn't holding the pregnancy. When she went to the doctor I went to - they changed the drug & behold - she has a 2 year old son now. I have an almost one year daughter...through Clomid. I HIGHLY recommed Dr. Andrew Levi in Trumbull. He's the best - very supportive & everyone I know who went ... has a baby! One other thing...are you using Clomid followed by an injection of Ovudril? If not, that could help significantly. Once the doctor tells you the eggs are 'ready', he gives you the go ahead to do the shot. This focuses the ovulation period to 12 - 24 hours so you know when to have intercourse - or do an insemination at the doctor. GOOD LUCK!! I'll be praying for you.

I understand. I was off the pill for about 1 1/2 yrs without sucess. I have always had very irregular periods so I figured that I would have a problem ttc. When I went to my doctor, she put me on a medicine that got my period going regular again, we did that for a couple of months, the doctor told me that starting a regular cycle of periods again would help me concieve and eventually carry a healthy pregnancy. After about 3 solid cycles, she put me on Clomid. She said to take the Clomid for 3 cycles. She said that 3 cycles is about what it should take to concieve unless there are more serious underlying fertility problems. So I took Clomid for the 3 cycles (March, April & May 06') and nothing happened. I was so said because this probably meant that I had more serious fertility issues. The next step would be to try invitro, but that is something that my husband and I were not prepared to do. Then, in June, a miracle happened, right around the time that I expected my period, it never came. I thought, "well, I guess its just my old irregular cycle again"! But something told me to take a pregnancy test and to our amazement we were pregnant! My doctor later said that the effect of the three cycles of Clomid had made my ovulation more regular! I say all this to you because I just want to let you know that you may still have a very good chance of concieving. Maybe your doctor will also reccomend 3 cycles of Clomid. But one thing you don't want to do is to be on Clomid for too long because it may delay looking into other alternatives for concieving and when it comes to our fertility, time is important! Anyway, I hope my story helps you on some level. I now have a healthy and happy 11 month old son that I thought I would never be able to have. So hang in there.

Did your Dr. prescribe Clomid in preparation of having artifical insemination? How much Metformin were you taking before you were taken off of it? I was diagnosed with PCOS and have been taking Metformin for months. I know what you mean about feeling horrible, it causes terrible stomach problems.

Before spending money on a specialist and taking drugs tha might make you have 3 instead of 1 baby, read The Garden of Fertility by Katie Singer. Chances are even if it doesn't help you concieve, it will help you understand what challenges your body is having so you can have a starting point of knowing what you need to change.
