My best friend has the mirena iud yesterday she decided she needed to take a pregnancy test...welll there was a total of 6 taken... she took 4 last night and 2 this morning,,the 4 last night came back positive but it was very very light,..the first one she took this morning came out neg and the 2nd one she took was positive again but very light...she called her dr this morning and he gave her another pregnancy test (urine) and it came out negative and told her to go back in 2 weeks to check again...he also told her he thought she was pregnant that it just may be a little bit too early to really pick it up

my question is....if he thought she might be why did he not take out her iud? i thought it had to be out immediately if you end up pregnant? personally i would have gone and got a second opinion or just made him take it out. i wouldnt want to risk the health of the baby

EDIT: FYI i havent voiced my concerns to her because i dont want her to worry...thats why i asked here...wow...and personally no i dont trust this dr (he was my ob for both my daughter and my son and he made some big mistakes when i was pregnant and had my son) and my real concern is about what the medication that is put out can do to the baby she has had the iud for 3 years
so if you have something rude or smart to say might as well not even comment...

What can I do next?

i dont know what the previous commenter means by "its too late to take it out.." because if you get pregnant with an IUD in, then yes, they usually want to take it out. However, there may not be too much harm in waiting just 2 weeks. If the test comes back positive in two weeks, then they will probably take it out then. But if they take it out now and she is not pregnant, well, that would be a waste. But as far as removing an iud during pregnancy, there are risks removing it as well as keeping it in. Of course if they left it in too long, then yes, it can cause miscarriage, but again, so can taking it out. Either way, i am sure the doctor will cover the risks and everything with her when the time comes and they know for sure.

If she's pregnant it's too late to take out the IUD. Meaning, taking it out now will not affect the pregnancy. She's either pregnant or not and there are good reasons for leaving it in, as outlined by Smash. The egg has already implanted. I would not be scaring my friend with suppositions unsupported by medical information. If she's concerned she can call the advice nurse. If she isn't, please let it go. No need to scare her.

If the egg has implanted in the uterus, then the IUD will need to be taken out. The danger to the baby is that she grows she grows into the IUD. The fetus, if there is one, is still too small to be affected by the IUD. I'm just guessing on this.

What it all means to me is that she needs to trust her doctor. Why jump to the conclusion that the doctor is wrong? Does the doctor have a good track record? Why would the doctor not do something that, if your premise is true, is so obviously necessary? Your friend has enough to think about without you adding more worry to her mind.

If you're very concerned, you could call a doctor and ask about this. Not her doctor because he won't be able to talk about his patient.

My daughter got pregnant with an IUD. The egg was implanted in her fallopian tube. Most pregnancies while with an IUD are ectopic. Taking out the IUD would not help that pregnancy. There are many factors to consider in this situation. It's not as easy as saying take out the IUD.

It's good to be concerned. You are a good friend. She needs you to stand by her during this difficult time.

Have her call her doctor just as a "just in case situation..."

If she's not pregnant, and takes out the Mirena, then over the next two weeks she could become pregnant. That's likely why the doctor isn't taking it out (yet).

Depending on the batch of tests she bought, they could have been too old to use or a bad batch. Typically I would say a positive is a positive. In her case, since the doctor's urine test came out negative as well as several of the ones she took including the first morning urine today, she might not be pregnant. However your friend could insist on having a blood test done now, which would be more accurate than a urine test.

The IUD isn't really the issue right now. It's waiting to figure out if she's actually pregnant.

My understanding was that a Dr is to give a pregnancy test before the IUD is inserted.

I don't understand the edit because I did not infer anything rude or smart with any answers you received.

I am not familiar with the IUD but I would follow my Dr.'s advice on what to do and when. Personally, if I thought I was pregnant, I would ask for a blood test if I had that many tests done and they were all over the place like hers were.

Best wishes to your friend and you.
