get maylox and corn starch.... mix together to make a paste and put on the rash it is a life saver and a butt saver.... it works GREAT
I recently started rice cereal with my 4 month old and it hasn't worked too well. She started getting very runny poops and now has very bad diaper rash. We stopped using the cereal and cut her back to just formula. Her poops are getting a little better but her poor bottom is very red. Right now I have her laying on the floor under her activity set with a plastic matt and a bunch of towels under her (no diaper) so the air can get to her. Needless to say she is NOT happy. I have also been using Desitin. Any suggestions would be great!!!
Thanks for all the helpful hints!!! I actually had some butt paste when my son had a rash. I kept her diaper off and it seems much better. thanks again for all your help!!!

Hi K.
I think you doin good. One thing I suggest is use desitin GOLD or the yellow in color one. Works a lot better than the white ans also a lot faster. Also when you give her a bath don't used soap in her bottom tis will irritated more. Hope she feels a lot better soon.

Go to walmart or Walgreens and ask for bordeaux's butt paste. I think that is how you spell it. But if not Ask for "butt paste they will know in what direction to point you.
I remember when My kids were that age. My oldest who is now 13 would always get diaper rashes. for her it was cornstarch. It worked wonders and my boys never had any problems but my youngest daughter I used Zinc Oxcide and that was great too. I just moved here from Texas and I worked in a nursing home and believe it or not the elderly get what we call diaper rashes too and the Zinc worked everytime. Try that. It would not hurt at all.
Hi K.,
my son was starting to get red and prickly diaper rash, and I could tell when I was wiping him that it hurt. I love Desitin when you need that heavy diaper cream but I noticed it does not soothe. I went to the health food store and found diaper oinment from California baby. It has lavender, chamomile, zinc, etc. that are all soothing on there little bums. It cost like $10.00 a tube but a little goes a long way and I only use it at night or when he needs it. I put it on his clean bottom and did what you did, just let him hang out naked. It healed up in two or three days. Really good stuff.
I also have a friend that swears by A&D diaper oinment. That you can buy anywhere.
Hope that helps.

it's a good idea that you stopped the cereal. at 4 mos her system might not have been able to digest it well. As for the rash, I swear by Aquaphor. Slather it on and the next day the diaper rash is nearly completely gone. Best of luck.

Hi K.,
I discovered a great product for diaper rash when my son was very young - someone told me I had to get it, it is called Butt Paste (funny name) but works great! You can get it at any grocery store or Babies R Us.
Good Luck

I found that using Desitin on a diaper rash made it worse. Try using Balmex that always worked for me. And also when you change her diaper don't use wipes use a damp rag, I found that made the rash worse too. If it doesn't clear up in a few days give the doctor a call. The same thing happen to to my daughter when I started her on whole milk. She had a terrible rash that wouldn't clear up and I had to bring her to the doctor and he gave her a prescription cream to clear it up. Hope everything works out.
Someone told me Lansinoh (BF'ing nipple cream) works extremely well on diaper rash. Actually, I've heard that from 2 different people.
My ped has recommended 2 different types of diaper rash ointment... Dr. Smith's and Aveeno. I personally don't like Desitin. It just doesn't seem to do the "job" for us.
Good luck!
I am a consultant for Arbonne International and we sell a GREAT diaper rash cream. If you're interested in trying it let me know! The products are all Pure, Safe and Beneficial.
Hello K.,
Make some Chamomile tea and give her a bath in it also every time you change her diaper dip a cotton ball in the tea and put it on her cleaned skin an let it dry. It helped me! I hope it will help you your daughter too. You can but Chamomile flower in the Nutrition store. You have to boil the water put the flower in it take it of and cover it with a plate and let it sit for about 5 minutes than you can use it. Good luck let me know if it worked out for you too. That's what we do in Hungary for a long long time...

I am so sorry you are going threw this. I remember when my child had a rash I cried because I could not take his pain away and it made me feel I was a bad mommy, because mommy is supposed to take the pain away. Well you have done nothing wrong. There are never one thing that is going to cure every kid and dont believe otherwise. There are many things you can choose to try till you find the one that is best. Number one the cereal dint do this. It is very genntle and your child needs to try solids to grow and later eat normal food. You said you have tried Desitine which is good but as I said not for every baby. There is A&D ointment, Beudreux's Butt Paste works well, Extra night emollient cream from Mary Kay I have not used myself but I have been told. you can also Make a good amount of CHAMOMILE TEA let it cool and bottle it (preferaby in a glass container). Whenever you change a diaper clean the area with a soft hand towel and this cooled tea(it doesnt matter if you have to launder more items your baby´s behind will be thankful) DO NOT USE WIPES most if not all contain alcohol or irritating substances. CHAMOMILE is a natural way to help inflamated and sore areas within its many benefits. I hope you got some ideas from this if not go to babycenter.com and serch for rash they have great ideas there. You can also try Putting a couple cups of oatmeal in a stocking and repeatedly dunk it into your child's bath water. Each time you take the stocking out of the water, squeeze it until the water no longer comes out milky. The oatmeal bath water helps clear up even the worst diaper rash and makes baby's dry skin softer. Try these things and if by chance none works take your baby to the peds Doc. and take a list of things you have already tried. Your child may need to be tested for a Yeast infection (yes babys can get it) Best of luck to you. keep being a good mother and wanting the best for your baby. Let me know if it worked!! God bless!! If you want to try the Mary Kay night cream to see if it will work contact me I will give it to you for free. I live in kendall area of miami. ____@____.com again good luck!
If the rash is extremely bad I would recommend you take your daughter to the doctor. Sometimes rashes can be caused by yeast. In which case you may need antibodics for her. If it's not that bad, I agree with the previous post that Arbonne's Baby Care line is excellent. I use it on my own son. It's realitivly inexpensive and it's also hypoallergenic, ph correct, botanically based, and most importantly pediatrician & dermatologist tested.
aquaphor...the best...want burn the butt, soothes and protects....can get at walgreens...in a couple locations baby section or in cosmetics...a little pricey but a little goes a long way and it works....

Hi there, I would stop using desitin for at least a day until she heals Desitin may not allowing it to heal. And do exactly what you are doing, leave the diaper off for many periods during the day and spread her little cheek and blow to keep the area dry. Use corn starch until she heals. The more you air it out the faster she will heal. And change her diaper as soon as she pees or poos, don't let it sit there, it will make it worse.
In general, make sure, when you change her diaper, you dry her very well. Dont' just use a wipee, then desitin and put a diaper back on. Clean her, then dry her very well, with a dry wash cloth or burb cloth (I always use one, I have one on my changing table and diaper bag)
Once you start with the cereal again, just as a precaution, put a LOT of desitin, make the entire area white! This will protect her from the acidic diahreah. My son had a stomache viurs and the doctor told me he would get diahreah and told me to do that and he did just fine, no problems. And he had very bad diahreah.
Her system will adjust to the cereal, it shouldn't take long.
Hope I helped!
I dont know what kind of cereal your using, but she may be sensative to dairy. If so, you should use beech-nut and not gerger. Also, I don't know if your b'fing or F'feeding. But my DD has problems if I eat too much dairy, I am B'fing.
As far as the rash... I would alternate using neosporin with pain relief, and a&D ointment. It always has helped my other babies. This one hasn't had a rash yet, thank GOd. The air will help it too, and rinse your wipes out with water so that they are as gentle as possible.
Sounds like you are doing the right things. No diaper as much as possible and desitine. Avoid baby wipes just rinse with water, no soap at all and give it a few days. If it persists you can call the doctor for ointment.
I always kept vasoline on my daughter. Every time I changed her I would put vasoline all over and believe it or not she never had a diaper rash. My sister and Aunt are the one's that told be about it and it really works because it repels everything away unlike powder which soaks it in and keeps it on the body. The nice thing is vasoline is cheap and you can buy the big one for at home and keep the small tubes in your diaper bag. Works just as good for boys too.
Good Evening K.,
Try Balmex diaper cream, use the white cream not the clear. I have used both, the clear cream did not work but the white cream did. My second daughter use to get awful rashes and this was the only thing that helped.

Hi K.:
I use the Aveeno diaper rash cream whenever my daughter has a really bad rash. It works like a charm.
I used Triple Paste when my daughter had a really bad diaper rash. We got it at CVS. It worked really well when Desitin didn't seem to do the trick. That was probably 2 months ago. We still try to let her run around without a diaper on a little every day. Ever since she's started eating solid foods, it seems like she's more prone to diaper rash. But, with the Triple Paste we can nip it in the bud before it gets to bad. Hope your little one heals quickly! I know how hard it is when they're in pain.
Here's a link that describes the different options.
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T084500.asp
My pediatritian recomended (and it worked!) Butt paste or Butt Balm (not sure wich name), it comes in a yellow box and you can buy it in Publix.
Myu son had it horribly around the same time. Long baths really seemed to help and go without a diaper for as long as possible. Good breathable diapers help too. ALSO make sure you suse alcohol free wipes, OWEE! I used the Butt Paste but there might be something better, my son's cleared up after a few days but when there are too many bowels a day it really is hard to prevent. Good luck! oh I know that if it gets too bad you can see a doctor and get a prescription.
Like a couple of the other mommies said, make sure it is not a yeast infection because that will not go away with diaper rash cream. You will need something like Lotrimin to get rid of it. In the meantime, you can try olive oil. It has alot of healing and soothing properties in it. I used it on my daughter when I changed her diaper and until recently(she took antibiotics)she has never had a diaper rash. She is now 9 months old. Instead of going to the ped., call and speak w/ the nurse and explain the symptoms, she should be able to tell you what it is and what to do.
A friend suggested this to me and it has been the best thing to use my diaper rash gets out of control. Create your own diaper paste using equal parts of these three things: Mylanta, Desitin (original, not creamy) and Hydrocortisone cream. Mix it up together and apply generously.
First and foremost, you should never use desatin on an unhappy bottom !!! All desatin does is cover up rashes, and if it's a bad one desatin can clear the surface skin but leave the infection underneath. I know 2 things that work wonders when used together ~ Salt Bath, and regular, good old A+D Ointment (not cream) globbed on the rash between Salt Baths. Those people who came up with A+D really knew what they were doing, I know it's smell is an aquired taste, but it works wonders and cures all types of rashes, not just baby bottom rash. Also, instead of using baby cereal, try mashing a bannanna, just 1 a day to start, and then add other foods on top of that. My son had the same problem whenhe had his first baby cereal, I found that making my own baby cereal went much better(blend regular oatmeal to powder and make cereal with whatever milk or formula baby is used to, or any other like rice, or wheat germ, whatever you eat at home, and after baby is used to it, you can add fruit and things to it, blended smoothly).
My Dr. told me that most kids have bad reactions to store bought baby cereals due to all the additives and higher vitamin count, they can only take so much in the beginning. But yeah, Desatin is BADunless you babys' bottom is perfectly healthy already, oh and Desatin will hide a yeast infection and cause HORRIBLE problems...my cousin found that out the hard way with her first son and it took months to cure him once we realized what the problem was...you can find A+D in the toiletries section of walmart/any other grocery store. Good Luck !!!
K.,
I found that nothing works but a product called Aquaphor. It looks like vasaline, its generally used for craked or dry skin. When I use it on my son's diaper rash it goes away in less than a hour. I have been using it for a long time & he's 18 months now. They sell it at CVS Pharmacy in a tube or a tub. It's not cheap but it does the trick. IT is down the lotion asile. Also I use it on my dry feet and the next day it's like I have been given "new" feet, nice & soft! I hope you give it a try, it's great stuff!

You need to find out if this is just a diaper rash or if it is a yeast rash. If it is a yeast rash, which is usually more severe than a regular diaper rash, you will want to avoid certain things you would use for diaper rash such as corn starch and diaper rash ointment, because that makes it worse. For a yeast rash you could use Lotrimin AF but, of course, check with your Dr. first on how much. Also, yeast rash is what Drs will prescribe nystatin (SP?A) for. Also, regardless of which type of rash it is, don't use baby wipes because they will irritate. Just use warm wet paper towels. If the rash has lasted for than a few days I would see a Dr because a yeast rash is persistant and painful for the little one. Hope she feels better soon!
Hi K.
There are two things that I used on my son when he was little one is called Butt Paste and is available at Wal Mart and most drug stores it works wonders..Also a peditrician told me to get a bottle of either malox or mylanta and use a q-tip,cotton ball or put a towel under him and pour it on the rash then wipe off the excess before putting the diaper on but make sure the rash is coated real well before putting the diaper back on and it works wonders his rashes would clear up within a couple days..The mylanta/malox does the same thing to the rash as it does to your stomach for heartburn soothes the acid in the rash and makes it feel better.Hope this helps to make her feel better
K.
BAG BALM!! You can get it at Shaffer Drug Store in Wellington.
K. talk to your child's doctor first, then ask him to prescribed nystatin ointment. It very good, people in the hospital used the powder for rash under their breast and groin areas. My son had a rash on his neck from eating the banana baby food and it cleared it up in a about an day.
I respect all the women who have replied thusfar, but I have to say FORGET all the creams and pastes! I LOVE the buttpaste, and I use desitin now and then as well, but for a serious rash that isn't responding I have only one recommendation:
SALT BATH! SALT BATH! SALT BATH!
Any ailement I have even seen below the belt is best cured with a salt bath! Get some epson salts and pour a good warm salt bath (deep enough for the two of you, I recommend 2 cups of salts per 4 inches of water in the tub) then sit your bottom down in the bath, and hold her between your legs with her bottom in the bath. Try to sit there at least 10 minutes, dry her off well and use a light powder of baby powder, then let her sit out w/o a diaper for as long as it takes her to wet herself...power her and re-daiper. This works best on diaper rash if done 2-3 times daily. If she will sit in the tub alone (or if you have a deep-set baby tub) you can have her do it alone as well. I personally guarantee her bottom will be fine within 2 days if you can manage to salt bathe her 2 times a day!
This also works wonders with any sort of "lady" issues down there too...yeast infections, random yuckieness, aches and pains, overly fastive intercourse...if the kitty (as we call it in our house) is unhappy, a salt bath will cure it!
When I was pregnant, the last 4 weeks I had some sort of infection that made me ooz, itch and burn...yeast kept coming back negative and no one could figure out what it was! They wanted to do a c-section because they were worried about it! After trying a ton of creams, anti-biotics, etc...I gave the chemical remedies up and did 3 salt baths a day for 2 days, no more itch, burn, or ooz!
Give it a try!

Have you tried petroleum jelly? I remember that was the only thing that would help my daughter. It just formed this protective barrier that wouldn't allow the urine to burn her when it came out. Hope it helps!
When my son had a very bad diaper rash from a bad stomach flu, my ped. told me to sit him in a shallow bath of warm water and baking soda for a few minutes with every diaper change. Then, use a hair dryer at cool setting and low speed to dry him down there. Then, we had a prescription diaper rash cream we used, and he cleared up in a few days. He had never had diaper rash before this, and he got this the first week of daycare. BTW, I never have used Desitin on my babies, I just didn't like the texture. But I have always used A&D, even when there is not rash, to keep a barrier there. Except for this one time with my son, neither of my kids (now 3 and 20 months) have ever had a rash. Good luck!
First things first- try Boudreaux's Butt Paste on the rash. That stuff is a miracle cure on little bums. It's not greasy and stinky like Desitin and it actually works. Desitin is fine for everyday- but we have always used the Butt Paste on our little guy and have never had a rash last longer than a day.
It sounds like you're little one isn't wuite ready for the cereal- either that or she has a mild allergy to the rice (very common to outgrow in the first 2 years). Wait a few weeks and check with your pediatrician to see if infant oatmeal or barley cereal is an option to try. Every baby is different and there is a lot of trial and error involved. Hang in there and good luck!
Hi K.,
My daughter had a horrible rash that the doctors couldn't figure out when she was that age. What seemed to help the best was first of all, don't wipe her at all. She screamed if we used anything to wipe her. I just picked her up, took her into the bathroom and rinsed her under the faucet with cool water in the tub. That helped to stop any more irritation. Then we found that Aquifur was the best thing to put on it. She seemed to heal up fast after that.
I hope this helps.
Hi K.,
I hope your baby is doing better by now, but I wanted to share my suggestion. My daughter had the worst case of diaper rash that I had ever seen. I was sooo afraid that the doctor might think that I was neglecting her. It looked like really bad insect bites, (high risen and bumpy in patches) not redness. No one could tell me what to do the get rid of it. My mom thought it was the cotton from the pull-ups. The only thing I had done differently was cater to her constant obsession with grapes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I was beginning to think it was the acid in the grapes. Well, then I decided to turn to the internet and view sites on severe types of diaper rash. Well, come to find out the best suggestion was DESTIN w/ Zinc. I cleaned her bottom and applied a generous amount all over her 3-4 times a day. It was gone in about a week. I could not believe it. She hasn't had it since. Thank you Destin!!!
Good luck, K..
I hope your little ones rash is gone by now...I have 5 kids and have seen alot of rashes mostly due to teething....My youngest gets the worst I've ever seen..We have been to the doctors more times then I can count due to her rashes...He gave me several different kinds of medicine..none of them worked...Her little butt was so raw...I finally figured out they were from a type of yeast...So I started using monistat cream/Miconazole Niyrate cream 3-4 times a day...It worked great..You can even get a no name brand of Antifungal cream at any dollar store..Good Luck
I stand by aveeno diaper rash cream. It worked very well for me.
