I know this is going to be an unpopluar answer, but my advice is DON'T DO IT!!! I came from a family who had 4 biological girls and we ended up adopting 4 of the foster kids....our family has been in turmoil since mom and dad made that decision when I was 10. I am now 33 and wish they had never made that choice!!

In my local area the social service agency provides fostercare training for new parents, not only does the training really help, but the class connects you to other parents for a support network for future use. Depending the age of children you receive in the home, there will be many new experiences, I thought just because I was already a parent to my two children I would be prepared for fostercare, but that is not so. Some of these children come with lots of issues and you will need support while giving these children a safe family environment. Good luck, it has been a very rewarding experience for my family.

It is very admirable of you and your husband for helping these children... but don't go into this situation with your eyes closed. Many of these children have very difficult past and their behaviors can be extremely challenging. There is a book that is called: Beyond Consequences, Logic and Control by Heather Forbes and Bryan Post. It is a very helpful book for parents who are dealing with these kids who have difficult pasts. Good luck!

I have done alot of foster parenting. The only advise I can give you is to remember to have lots of patience, these children have been through alot and sometimes act up becouse of that. No matter what dont give up on them that is why you have them, someone already gave up on them. enjoy the love they will give you and have fun. if you need to talk ever you can e-mail me i will help all i can.

That could be of help for what purpose? If you are working with a social worker, they can help, or an agency, they can give you pointers and tell you what you need to do.

What are you trying to find out or get more information about?

Hi L.:
Contact your local Human Services dept for Child welfare. Let them know you want to be a foster parent and they will get you set up with a social worker. You will so through a extensive background check and personal profile. My husband and I went through everything 2 years ago to take my nephew. If you need any support please feel free to reach me at my email, ____@____.com whole process is overwhelming at times. We did not get custody but we did a little respite care. Their are also indepent agencies out there but just start with local child protection services. God bless and good luck.
