I don't know about the cradle cap spreading but the red from drooling, just use some A&D ointment at bedtime around the chin.
I have a three and a half month little boy who was recently diagnosed with cradle cap. His scalp is flaky and almost red and raised in spots. Now I have noticed a bean shaped area on his face by his ear that looks like one of the areas on his head. It is red and dry and seemed to appear over night. Can the cradle cap spread to his face? He has also been drooling like a mad man and now appears to have a skin irritation under his chin and on his chest. Any advice?
So it turns out that the face rash was a mild case of eczema and Aquaphor took care of it! We were also able to rid him of the cradle cap by using Johnson's baby shampoo and lightly scrubbing his head with a baby brush. Within a few weeks, the cradle cap was virtually gone.
On a side note - he had his four month check up yesterday and it looks like the irritation around his neck is a bit of a yeast issue from all of the drooling. Our pediatrician said that Lotrimin should take care of it.
Thanks to all of you for your wonderful advice!

I don't know about cradle cap spreading but it sounds to me that it could be the beginnings of eczema. You should get your baby checked for allergies to food. Our son started out this way with his eczema and it was found that he is currently allergic to eggs and milk. Best wishes! I hope it is NOT eczema but it is good to find out.
Hi A.,
First I'd like to say, Congrats on your son turning over.
Second, my son suffered from really bad cradle cap. I had initially bought the shampoo that they have for babies with cradle cap (I can't remember the name but it has Winnie the Pooh on the label), but it smelled really bad when I used it on him. My pediatrician suggested I do nothing about it, but it was getting really dry and flaky, not to mention my son has A-typical skin which means he is prone to really dry skin, eczema, allergies and asthma. So I used JOHNSON'S SOOTHING NATURAL Soothe & Protect Balm. It really helped. I cleaned his face several times a day as he was drooling just like your little one, and put this on a minimum of three times a day.
I hope this helps.

Usually when a baby has cradle cap, they can have eczema as well. This happened with my child in one way or another. The only products I have found that helped (and I feel like I tried everything) was Arbonne's Baby Care line. I'd be happy to send you some samples.
All I had to do with the cradle cap was put the oil on their heads in the tub, comb their hair, then wash with the baby wash. In about a week the cradle cap was gone. For their face, I would use the Rejuvenating Cream until the spot gets under control. Then you can just switch to the lotion as needed. I use the body/hair wash on all three of my children still - ages 14 months, 5 and 8.
These products really helped my children quickly. My middle son had a spot on his cheek that I thought for sure was going to scar because he would scratch to the point of bleeding. These products helped his skin to heal beautifully! The thing I love about them too is that they are not products I have to continue to put on my children every day. Once I got their conditions under control, the only thing I use constantly is the wash. Diaper rash cream, lotion, sunscreen, oil...it's all as needed now.
The products also are not thick or greasy which I love. I showed the ingredient lists to my pediatricians and they were very impressed as well liking the fact that the products are botanically based without oils or fragrances.
Again, I'd be happy to send you samples. Please just let me know.

My daughter, who is now 9, used to get a rash from drooling with her binky. I would put just a very, very thin layer of diaper rash cream on her chin, and it would clear right up.
The spot on your sons face sounds like eczema. You can use a dab on cortizone cream on it a couple times a day, and should help.
I'll never forget when my first had a rash on her chin. I was so concerned. I got a follow-up call from the hospital after a week or so and I mentioned this. The nurse said to keep her face dry after feeding. I guess I was letting her just fall asleep while nursing and without removing her or cleaning her up a rash developed. If you need an ointment I recommend lansinoh.
my daughter has eczema on her face and it sounds a lot like what you are describing. Triple cream does wonders, you can get it at CVS in the baby isle... just make sure you grab the eczema cream and not the diaper rash cream!
the rash is probably eczma. Try Gental Naturals cradle cap wash and eczma cream. Works great!
layer his clothing, and use bibs...make sure you keep him as dry as possible...as for the rashes/craddle cap...it happens his skin was wet for 40 weeks...it'll adjust...it just takes time...goodluck!
Hi A.!
My son also had bad cradle cap, He would sometimes get it on his eyebrow area, so maybe this could be cradle cap near his ears also.
I found no matter what i did i could not get it to go away, i would put every oil i could think of on his head and then brush the flakes away, used all the different shampoos, nothing helped!! I finally went to a dermatologist for another reason for my son and the DR, said that I should shampoo every day with a mild non drying, (we used kielhs brand) and he gave me a topical prescription and it knocked it out out on the first try!
The skin irritation is normal from drooling, my pediatric NP friend said to put some aquaphor on it.
Good luck!! Congrats on the rolling over!
I don't want to put any unnecassary worry on you but just keep on eye on it or take him to the doctor. It most likely isn't but it could be strep. I babysat a little boy who would get strep on his cheeks. It was accompanied by congestion and runny nose though. We thought it was irritation from his ruuny nose but when it didn't go away after a week his mother took him to a doctor and they said it was strep. Just a little info for you to think about.
Are you sure it's cradle cap? If it is, you can put baby oil in his hair and comb it through and perhaps wait about a hour or two and wash his hair out. It works with cradle cap, but the raised spots and behind his ear, no, I don't think it's anything to do with cradle cap. Not from my experience with three boys. Perhaps it's a rash or an allergic reaction to something he's wearing, soap detergent, or eating. If breastfeeding, perhaps something you're eating. If formula fed, it may be the formula. You should bring him to the pediatrician and seek advice about what it is but mention that I have used and have heard others too have used baby oil in the baby's hair and comb it and works wonders with cradle cap. But make sure it's cradle cap, no hemangioma (spelling?) it's just a birth mark and my son has one on his forehead and it's going away and it's almost gone and they say that they go way and it doesn't hurt.
My oldest and especially with my second son, drooled so much that they had a rash and red marks on the chin and on the upper part of their chest. I have had to put bibs on them and constantly dab the chin because it would eventually hurt and they hate it but oh well. It'll eventually go away but try to be wiping or I should say dabbng his chin. It's a lot of work, but it won't be for a very long time.
Congratulations that he's rolling over. Write those things down for him when he grows up he'll have all this information and pass it on his children for them to learn about him as baby as well.
For starters congrats on the roll over!! I have a 3 month old son who also has cradle cap. I use the burts bees apricot oil and a little baby oil on his head. My son also had the little bean dry patch on both ides of his face (he likes to rub his face on things) I have found that using the Aveeno baby lotion on his face 2x a day cleared it right up in 2 days. Good Luck
I used zinc oxide ointment on my babies rashes. Their little skin is very sensitive and they can get wind burn, heat rash or rashes from saliva. Zinc oxide is very soothing and it sticks well to the skin, doesnt rub off easy. Of course times have changed, so I would check with his dr. But as far as I know it is very safe.
