My 7 month old has what appears to be a rash or patches of dry skin on his back and some on his legs. I plan to take him in to the doctors but wondered if anyone else has experienced the same issues.

What can I do next?

try washing or bathing with cetaphil not the lotion the cleanser( it is a non sudsing clear lotin instead of a foaming wash) and I used vaseline to lube my rashy son up while still wet in the bath and then put him cotton pj's. It cleared up but winter is working against us as the dry air and cold air doesnt help. but its worth a try, inexpensive. I went to tons of dermatlogists and in the end tried this and it worked. good luck.

Excema in this time of year is very common, my son had a few dry patches and my doctor said I was lucky it was so few. She recommended Aquafor (by the same makers of Eucerin) for babies which worked great. You can get it at any drugstore/babystore. I still use it before bedtime for any dry/red patches or marks, even on his lips.

It's probably eczema from the cold weather now. Obviously, keep your Dr appt in case it's not, but try using Cetaphil lotion on it...it's the best for eczema. Also, only bathe him every other day because bathing too often will dry the skin out and make it worse.
Another cause of rash could be a change in laundry detergent, fabric softener, baby wash or lotion....just some things to keep in mind.

Hi E.,

My son has the same issue, especially as the colder weather approaches. Aquaphor usually solves the problem in a couple of nights' use. I rub it all over the dry patches and then dress him for bed. He wakes up 90% better! It's great stuff!

My son used to get that , but it turned out to be eczema, Something that he is eatting could be triggering it. Take him to an allergy doctor as well.

Hi, E..

It may be ezema. You may ultimately need a prescription for him depending on the severity of the ezema. To hold the moisture in his skin, use a hypoallergenic lotion after you bathe him. Also try using the lotion before you take him out of the house. This will help to protect any exposure to the cold. If you use lotion constantly, you should be able to get it under control.

Best of luck with your son.

E.,
My little 6 month old had that a few months ago and her pediatrician recommended Cetaphyl - both the soap for bathtime and the lotion - apply a couple of times a day...it really helped. (My little girl also had some "raw" looking spots in her leg creses - and they said hydrocortisone cream for those spots only)
I still use the Cetaphyl - it is really gentle - hypoallergenic and non-perfumed.
Take care!

I have a 7 month old boy with the same symptoms. I could be wrong but it may be a slight case of eczema.I've been applying Aquaphor Healing Ointment and the red bumps eventually do go away. Also you might need to lather your son up with a moisturizing cream as often as possible to prevent the dry skin especially after a bath. My son has had these red bumps on his cheeks as well as his arms, back, and legs. He's had them on and off for months and now that the weather is getting colder and drier, they are appearing more frequently. Good luck and happy lathering!

Honestly the best thing is Auqafor. It is soothing and great for your dry hands as you wash them more than you ever have since you are a new mom. If your baby has more dry patches I would not bath so often either. If baby has cradle cap then put very little olive oil on the scalp - it really works and comb often.

My son has the exact same thing, and has had it since he was born. He usually only gets in during the colder months. I have found that using Baby Aveeno lotion (try to make sure it has oatmeal in it.) works the best. When the dry spots became really bad, i would put him in a oatmeal tob soak. Aveeno also sells that.

Hi E.,

I just resently started with a company called Arbonne that has all natual skin care products after learing what is in even the baby shampoos and body wash and I have seen the results of a baby that had a rash and I though oh that is great. Than last week my daughter who is 14 months old had a rash around her mouth from licking her chin and drooling and teething and I went home and put more lotion on her face and before she went to bed I seen a difference. I would definately recommend to try an all natual product on him if you are not already using it.
Best of luck with your little one,
J.

It sounds like eczema, my husband gets it in the winter really bad. I would still see the doctor and see if he will prescribe something. In the meantime try some Aquaphor it is great for dry skin.

sounds like excema. I would see what a dermatologist says but ours told us to use cetaphil only for washing and lotion and to put 1% hydracortisone on the spots twice a day until it went away. It worked great - however I would not use hydracortisone on your child unless your child is diagnosed with excema and the doctor recommends this. I would definitely get it diagnosed as this can be very itchy for a baby so you don't want them to have to suffer.

Your best bet is to use some Renew lotion from Melaleuca. It has been better than Eucerin for us. Contact me and I'll send you a sample.

Does he wear clothes from Carters? Some kids were experiencing a rash from the tags on the fall 2007 clothing line. Check out their website to see if that could be a culprit. There was a small percentage of kids that had a reaction and they are accepting the clothing back, thought there hasn't been an official recall.

Sounds like excema. Anyone with this problem would respond well to the Arbonne baby line. Hope this helps.

Sounds like it might be eczema. You should definately see the doctor. My son has it too and when he was about the same age as yours we had to use prescription cortisone for awhile to help it clear up. Now we know not too bathe him too often, that we have to use Aveeno lotion all the time and he has to wear "soft" clothes not to irritate it. It has gotten better as he has gotten older but it does flare up occassionly. Check with your ped. and good luck.

My son at the age of 10 months had something simular it started on his leg and moved up his back and on his arms. I took him to the doctor they weren't positive it was eczema so they sent me to a dermatologist. They prescribed medication for my son that should not have been. Before filling the prescription I researched them online and found out that they shouldn't be used on a child under 2 due to high risk to leukemia and other aliments which was on the company who manufacture its website. Also not to be used long term which they prescribe it for 6 month then 2 weeks off then 6 months. Once they told me it was eczema I knew Renew lotion from melaleuca would do the trick so I did 2x's a day for 1 week it was gone I continue to use it once a week. He is now 2 and hasn't had any problems.
