Rash All over Toddlers Body

Last Monday or Tuesday I noticed some spots on my toddler. I thought they were mosquito bites. As the week went on I noticed there where more and more spots. Saturday they were all over his body and are all different sizes. They are not raised up and do not seem to bother him. He has not ran any fever or had any side effects. I gave him Claritin Saturday morning and they seemed to have lightened up alot by the time he went to bed. Sunday morning they were almost completely gone. As of last night they seemed to be coming back but then again this morning (after another dose of Claritin yesterday) they are barely there again. He only has a few spots. I gave him Claritin again this morning. If they seem to go away after giving him Claritin does this mean he has come across something that he is allergic to? Should I take him to the doctor for this or wait and see how he seems to do over the next couple of days?

Definately take him to the Dr. My son has had a number or rashes. I always felt silly, but the majority of the time, they've been something requiring anti-biotics or specific ointments. It could be roseola, scarletina or any number of things. Good luck!!

My son had a rash exactly like you described--just little red dots that weren't raised, nor did they itch. I analyzed the recent changes to our routine and realized the culprit was the Mr. Bubbles (the one for sensitive skin) Bubble Bath. We stopped using it, and we've seen no more spots!

Since it has been a week I would definitely take your baby to the doctor. When my kids were little it seems every time i ran to the doctor it was something minor, but when I assumed it was minor it turned out to be a bit more. It's probably nothing, but if it is strep you certainly don't want it going unattended. Better safe than sorry.

It sounds like whiteflies. My son was about that age last summer and got bit horribly - you can't even really see them because they are smaller than fruit flies and white. I would call the ped to bring him in, because they may want to put him on an allergy med.

For awhile, I used Badger Balm all natural insect repellant whenever I took DS2 outside, but this year he doesn't seem affected by them. Is your son very pale? Mine's pasty white and the ped said that the darker you are, the more the melanin is able to kind of sheild you against reactions to the bites.

Good luck and please update!

My two year old is the king of rashes. He's had all kinds. Usaully if it's a food allergy they are raised, but I'm no doctor! I'd have him checked...

Sounds like an allergy, but it could be something else. I thought my son had an allergic reaction to something once, and he really had 3-Day Measles. I'd take him in, just to be sure. I hope he's better soon!

I wonder about a heat rash. My kids get them. Try to notice if it's worse when he is out sweating or a little warmer than when he's in the cool air conditioned house. --C.

Since it's recurring, I would suggest you take him to the doc. At first it sounded like heat rash, but I wouldn't think Claritin would help that. It may be an allergy or even a skin sensitivity to your detergent. Always best to get him checked out just to make sure. Good luck!

My daughter is 16 months and she ended up with the same rash. One afternoon she started to have small red dots on her back that spread to her belly and then all over her body. I would get her benadryl and that seemed to help. When I took her to the doctor come to find out she had strep throat and I did not even know it. She has no symptoms and played and ate just fine. She was never cranky and you couldnt tell she was sick. She has to be put on antibiotics for 10 days. The doctor said it is common for children to break out in rashes when they have strep throat. She recommended amoxcillion and benedryl.

Definately must be an allergy to something if Claritin releaves it.

Have you recently had your carpets/floors cleaned? My nephew was allergic to the carpet shampoo and had the same symptoms.

Another thing you may check is your car/carseat's fabric.

I used to have trouble with my son having sensitive skin until we went to "free and clear" (All and Purex carry this type of laundry soap). I also add baking soda and sun brand oxy (1/4 cup of each) to every load for deodorizing and heavy cleaning power.

Hope this helps.

Blessings,

Both my kids had reactions to antibiotics (penicillan) that caused similar spots. The doctor said they were hives and the kids were allergic to penicillan. I think you should bring it to the attention of your doctor as well as consider if there was anything new in the diet, environment etc that could have caused an allergic reaction. Remember that it's not always the FIRST encounter that causes a reaction in small children. it could be days after and after a few exposures. The fact that the rash/bumps/spots disappeared after some antihistamine really says a lot and at leasts makes me suspicious of an allergic reaction. Tell your doctor though. The hives my daughter got where so deep and big that the doctor was very concerned and had her on prescription antihistamines right away and luckily they worked but the reaction really bothered my daughter b/c it was a big one. My son just got the spots like you describe but not the other problems. good luck

I think there is something going around..a virus. The kids I babysit had the rash, but they had strep. I got "spots"...16 of them along my side...some red, some had white heads like a pimple or bite. It's been since Wednesday and they are just now going away. It was the only symptom I had other than a bad headache for 3-4 days prior to getting the spots. Go figure!
