My 27-month-old has had a rash on his back, right at the top of his diaper. It's bumpy and sometimes red, but he says it doesn't itch or bother him in any way. It's been there for about a week but isn't spreading at all. What can/should I put on it? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great help! I've tried a few of your suggestions and it seems to be working. It's not totally gone yet, but it's getting better. Thanks!!

it could just be the friction of the diaper.
Or a fungus... is it in a circular shape?
Or, from heat/sweat
dry skin

It could be anything, so have the Doctor look at it.
If you don't know what it is, and you put something on it, it could make it worse or irritate it.

It could be eczema. Try putting hydrocortisone on it twice a day. If it clears up, it was probably eczema. For eczema in the long run, be sure that you keep the skin hydrated with a really good lotion. My whole family uses Renew lotion and the eczema has cleared up.

My son has EXTREMELY sensitive skin. Cornstarch was the only thing I could ever use on him when he was little and had a diaper rash. If it isn't bothering him I wouldn't worry about it, just add cornstarch--sounds like heat rash and this should help. If it gets worse, pharmasists are also a great resource--and they won't charge you to tell you that it is only ______.

If it doesn't go away call the doctor so he can have a look. You can google under images pediatric rash and see if you can identify the rash.

Of course the 1st answer will be see your doc but my 11 mo old just had something that sounds similiar. Doc said it was Ezcema. Using hydrocortizone cream 1% 2x day and aquafor. I believe my was cause by too many bubbles in the tub. Rash is right at water line on her back. Good luck!

It might just be irritation from his diaper/dry skin. I'd try Cetaphil (Target/WalMart) in the tub... for dry skin, no perfumes etc...

Try "Renew" from Melaleuca. It is proven effective for dry skin and eczema.

My guess is it's heat/irritation rash. My son gets one sometimes in the same place, it's from sweating - he gets overheated when he sleeps and sweats a lot. Because there's no absorbency on that part of the diaper, that area will stay moist and get rash-y. It doesn't itch for him either. What I do is put a thin layer of Balmex on it until it heals (usually just a day), and make sure I put a little powder on that area at every diaper change to keep it dry. Hope this helps!

There are two things that come to mind.
1. Aveeno-like lotion for really dry skin, if that's what it is.
2. Hydrocortisone cream for irritation, if that's what it is.

Good luck!

I would not use hydro cortisone cream it has steroids in it. When my ped had recommended it I got upset with her and found a better cream that is all natural. You can only order it online. If you become a member then you get a discount. Let me know if your interested.
